Longmont Police Services (LPS) says.

The document identifies the victim as 33-year-old Jason Schaefer.

Devan Schreiner, 26, is accused of shooting him in the face as he delivered mail around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. She faces first-degree murder charges.

Around that time, a resident who lives on Sicily Circle called 911 to report that a postal worker was shot in their driveway and they had seen a person running southeast from the area, the affidavit says. That person was wearing a dark hoodie and a blue mask, according to the document.

Through the investigation, it was learned that she owned a black Nissan Rogue with a right front passenger hubcap missing. At 12:06 p.m. on Wednesday, a car matching that description was captured on camera driving past a home on Summerlin Court and then back toward Renaissance Drive, the affidavit says.

A resident reported that they saw that vehicle back into an access road to a field at the end of Renaissance Drive and Summerlin Court.

Just after 12:30 p.m. another home security camera in the area captured a person running from the area where the incident took place, according to the affidavit.

An investigator learned through an interview that Schaefer had received threats from Schreiner and that Schaefer had messages and court paperwork at his home about those threats, the affidavit says.

The document also says that Schreiner had been fired from her work at the Longmont branch of the postal service about two weeks ago due to "an incident involving her and Jason." Schreiner, in turn, recently began working at the Loveland branch of the postal service.

Postal carriers are issued GPS-enabled scanning devices which constantly report GPS data to USPS servers, the affidavit says. Records were reviewed for Schreiner's device and there was an "extended time" when her device was stationary, which is unusual, according to the affidavit.

Longmont Shooting: Ex-Girlfriend Devan Schreiner Arrested In Mail Carrier's Murder

Schreiner was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday afternoon but the hearing was vacated. She’s now not scheduled to make an appearance in Boulder County Court until Tuesday. She does not appear to have a previous criminal history.

“This crime appears to be an isolated incident and an act of domestic violence,” Longmont Deputy Police Chief Jeff Satur wrote in a press release. “We are withholding the arrest photo at this time, pending additional witness interviews.”

Satur said searches of the suspect’s home in Fort Collins, as well as at the home of an acquaintance of her’s in Loveland, were taking place on Thursday morning.

Satur did not elaborate on details of the relationship between Schreiner and the shooting victim. However, online public records indicate Schreiner was involved in an ongoing child custody dispute with a 33-year-old Longmont man. A motion in the dispute was filed Monday.

Following the shooting, flowers were brought to the scene in the southwestern part of the city, and a spokesman for the USPS talked about how the workers mean a lot to the people they serve.

Police arrested Devan Schreiner, 26, Wednesday evening for investigation on a first-degree murder charge. She had been set to make his first court appearance Thursday afternoon, but the hearing was rescheduled for Oct. 19.

According to an affidavit for her arrest, a resident called police to a home in the 2000 block of Sicily Circle in Longmont just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday reporting that the letter carrier had been shot in the driveway and that a person wearing a dark hoodie and blue mask was seen running from the area.

They found the postal carrier dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to his face. He was working at the time, according to the affidavit. Video from the scene indicated four shots were fired, according to the document.

A friend and coworker, Trey Smith, identified the victim Thursday as Jason Schaefer. He had not been formally identified by the county coroner’s office as of early Thursday afternoon.

When the postmaster arrived at the scene of the murder, he made a comment asking, “Did the baby mama do it?” the affidavit says. Investigators found Schreiner and Schaefer have a child together and that court documents had been filed on Monday in which Schaefer asked to have parenting time modified – documents that Schreiner was supposed to be served with.

Those documents show the couple have a 5-year-old child and that they entered into a parenting plan for the child in June 2018 in which the two shared equal time with the child. But the documents also show that Schreiner was not giving Schaefer her new address, was changing pickup times and locations, and that the child had been injured several times and exposed to COVID during Schreiner’s time with the child.

The custody document, filed by an attorney for Schaefer, claims Schreiner refuses to coparent the child, was not communicating about taking the child out of therapy and would not enroll the child in kindergarten. Schaefer’s attorney asked the court to give Schaefer the majority of the parenting time and sole decision-making responsibilities. Court records also show prior divorce and custody cases involving the two.

After Losing Her 'Kiddo,' Mom Of Mail Carrier Jason Schaefer Gives Thanks To Supporters At Longmont Vigil

“One thing that I have learned through all of this is that he was like a little hummingbird. A butterfly. He just brought so much joy and whimsy to all of us,” said a woman who remembered Jason Schaefer as a mail carrier who took the time to talk to her.

“I thought it was me,” she said. “I would listen for the sound of his old … mail car.”

“I just don’t know what to say I’m going to miss him so much,” said Schaefer’s mother Lori Hebert. She and her husband Chris were very thankful for the people who attended the vigil and who have been so supportive. “He’ll always be my son, I always called him kiddo.”

The vigil came on the same day when there was word of the arrest of 34 year old Andrew James (A.J.) Ritchie. Ritchie was in a romantic relationship with Schreiner, according to a police affidavit. Ritchie is now in jail without bond awaiting a court appearance on the charge of complicity to commit murder in the 1st degree. The affidavit indicated he could have contacted police if he knew Schreiner was talking about killing Schaefer, but did not. The killing on Oct. 13 came only two days after Schaefer filed an request with the courts to have his parenting time with the couple’s son modified.
