Hoping the toxicology tests will come back soon and have some useful results to help explain how this may have happened, though it seems unlikely there will be any real answers.

Friends, family remember Matthew Shelters as compassionate, adventurous spirit

I had not seen this article about Matthew before; the similarities to Adam Gilbertson in how he is described really come through:

“Matthew’s heart and kindness are legend. He celebrated the best things in people," Nathan(his brother) said. "Some rare people shine because they are genuine and life pours from them like light from a beacon. Folks are drawn to that. Matthew was such a person. You knew that you mattered. He made you laugh hysterically. He cherished what made you you.

“To know him was to love him and that will never fade. No simple words will ever do justice to the man that this world has lost."

Cause of death for Matthew Shelters remains a mystery

    [
"The toxicology is taking a long time just because there was not much to work with, and they have to retest," Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg said.

Wiggins said the toxicology tests are going to show the presence of toxins, but it won't show the amounts. Toxicology tests typically determine amounts of toxins, but that information likely won't be available because of the limited samples they were able to collect.

Cause of death for Matthew Shelters remains a mystery

    [
On July 4, his body was discovered badly decomposed next to Soda Creek on private land just outside city limits.

"It makes us wonder what in the world was anybody doing in this area," Wiggins said.

The sheriff said it is believed Shelters might have been coming from a nearby trail downstream.

Toxicology results released for Steamboat resident Matthew Shelters

[Michael Burson, a forensic pathologist from Loveland, wrote in the report that the official cause of death was undetermined.

“The presence of cocaine … suggests that acute cocaine intoxication may have been present at the time of his death," he wrote.]

[Shelters' keys were located downstream from his body near a fence. Shelters' shoes and hat were found above his body on a hillside. He was found wearing a black shirt, boxer shorts and a black sock on his right foot. A black sweatshirt, a pair of jeans and another black sock were found near Shelters’ body.]

I suppose he could have dropped his keys, but that detail is odd. His girlfriend's car was reported to be parked at a friend's located right above the creek. How close were the keys?
It otherwise looks like he may have suffered hypothermia due to the coke, began to feel overheated, began undressing and fell. I wonder if the state of his clothes looked like they came off him naturally, or if he either undressed or dropped them?

    From the link:
Dopplick said the grid section where Shelters was found had been marked as searched.
