Man who put body in trunk may have lured his victim

ARAPAHOE COUNTY - Investigators believe Robert Johnson, 40, lured his 80-year old victim into a trap last week shortly before shooting the man in the back of his head.

Two days later, they say, Johnson drove to the Arapahoe County Jail in his victim's car ready to talk to authorities. Inside the car's trunk was the victim himself.

It was on Thursday of last week, according to a newly-released arrest affidavit, when Johnson told the victim that his truck had broken down on County Road 118 near Byers. The 80-year-old man "advised that he would respond to his location with a tow strap."

When he showed up on scene, the victim opened up his trunk looking for that tow strap. The affidavit suggests Johnson then held a gun "6 inches from the back of his head and shot."

The man partially fell into the trunk. "[Johnson] then pushed [the victim] into the trunk and closed the trunk" according to the affidavit.

As of Monday afternoon, the victim's name has not been released.

Prosecutors expect to charge Johnson with first-degree murder in the victim's death. He is expected in court on Tuesday morning.
