The vaccines are working very well.

I think the issue in the US is that there is a massive chunk of the population who is not double vaxxed or boostered. So it is not easy to see how effective the vaccines are .... in promoting far less serious illness, far less death (their intended purpose).

In a state like mine, it is easier to see the effect of the vaccines.
Where fully-vaxxed rates are high (and where our 'curve' is pretty much a vertical line at the moment, as we come from a position of zero cases), the amount of covid deaths is negligible and hospitalisations are very low.
Most are successfully treated at home.

Recent covid deaths: 2 (a 90+ woman, and an under 2 years old child)

My son just took a rapid test and it's NEGATIVE!!! He'd been very sick since the 27th and still isn't feeling his best, but...

My daughter-in-law hasn't taken one yet. She seems to be behind my son by a day. Maybe tomorrow or Tuesday he said.

ETA Daughter-in-law just tested and it shows she's still positive.

Our “expanded” Instacart order arrived with more substitutions than usual and no TP (we’re picky until we can’t be). I probably should have gotten the house brand just in case. So we we’ll be in good shape for most of January provided our Freshly orders arrive each week. And there’s always rice and beans that I already had. I think we can count on shortages increasing and I echo the advice to stock up a bit.

I just checked on Covid tests in our area. The tests are triaged. Free for people who are symptomatic, or live with positive person.
Free for people who are in healthcare or live in aggregate settings
$150 for people who need a test for travel or other purposes.

Interesting. And consistent. Some tests are a false negative or a false positive.
