OMG Corona?snow?, snow virus?. Thanks to the social media and the CNN's of the world, mass hysteria has now descended on my peaceful part of the world. We are expecting a small snow (2-4") and as I stood in line for my pint of milk, fresh strawberries, watermelon, jerky and beer to watch sports at home this weekend, I was surrounded by people with 2-3 carts full of ? The lady behind me and I started to talk, she had 2 36 rolls of tp, so I asked, large family? Oh no, just my husband and I but we've been told on social media and CNN to stock up on tp, because we may not be able to get out for months! So congratulations to all the fear mongers, guess the media is successful in creating the largest hoax of mass hysteria ever. Just MOO

They finally descended on my local grocery yesterday. It was all I could do not to kick someone.

What sports are you watching? I thought everything had been cancelled.

This flu is becoming a PITA for me personally.

I may have to cover 2 mortgage payments for a few months, plus more, as people in my family have been laid off, and they pretty much work paycheck to paycheck, as most of us do.

No mo shoes for Mickey.
I'm hoping that instead of tax breaks for the corporations, that continued wages will be given to the working people. Italy has suspended mortgage payments during their crisis. Now that is kind.

Pennsylvania

.@GovernorTomWolf announced today that all major health insurers in PA will cover medically appropriate COVID-19 diagnostic testing and associated treatment and have committed to waive any cost-sharing for the testing.

Considering a move to PA, I'm liking how this governor works. We are abandoned in VA, our governor is in hiding. But word is out... Folks are organizing to head to the capital in protest. SW VA is almost out of N95 mask for first responders and NO ONE in Richmond knows how to access this "Stockpile of supplies" discussed at the presser by the governor.

Those of us who have been following since the beginning are going off direct quotes from CDC and WHO officials as well as medical officials from the around the world. Not from "the media".

If you believe that what's happened in China and what's happening in Italy and Iran isn't real, you're in for a shock.

This is a global disaster. And not due to "hysteria".

WOW.... WHO, China, Italy, all world leaders, the CDC are all in kahoots to create world panic. First I've heard of a hoax.

So sorry this hoax has disrupted your life.

Moo
The hoax is the mass hysteria of continuing to doom and gloom, not the virus, Just as our president said, but unfortunately some people only listen to the opinion news of the world, (CNN, etc). My state gives information, not opinion. We do not use could be, or might be, just the facts. The virus is to be taken serious, just as the flu, but the media as well as social media needs to always make a crisis out of everything. The virus has not disrupted my life, how kind of you to feel sorry for me, but I'm just fine. MOO

80 Defence Forces cadets are being trained in Covid-19 contact tracing
(Ireland)
CADETS IN THE Defence Forces are being trained in contact tracing for the coronavirus with 20 cadets starting in the role from today.

Contact tracing is undertaken after a person has been diagnosed with Covid-19 in an effort to identify close and casual contacts the person may have had while infected.

Dr Greg Martin, a specialist in public health medicine with the HSE, has been in charge of training cadets in this area.

good on them...would say why don't we do that here but contact tracing is impossible without testing...such a travesty.

How To Get Tested For Coronavirus In Canada, What The Symptoms Are, Where To Get Help

Quotes from article:

As the coronavirus known as COVID-19 spreads in Canada, the sheer volume of information and misinformation about it can make it difficult to know exactly what is going on, and what to if you think you or someone near you could have the virus.

So Maclean’s has compiled information about the current situation in Canada, symptoms of COVID-19, who is most vulnerable to the virus, as well as self-isolation and notification details for each province and territory. We combed through the official coronavirus webpages of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO), which recently published a preliminary report on the outbreak in China. Symptoms
Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to the virus while the average is 5-6 days after infection (PHAC and WHO)

According to a World Health Organization report from the end of February on COVID-19 in China, symptoms in confirmed cases included:

  • Fever (88%)
  • Dry cough (68%)
  • Fatigue (38%)
  • Sputum production (33%)
  • Shortness of breath (19%)
  • Muscle or joint pain (15%)
  • Sore throat (14%)
  • Headache (14%)
  • Chills (11%)
The WHO report on COVID-19 in China found that:

  • 80% of patients experienced mild to moderate effects (fever, cough, maybe pneumonia—but not needing supplemental oxygen)
  • 14% suffered severe symptoms (requiring supplemental oxygen, including via a ventilator)
  • 1% were critical (respiratory failure, septic shock and/or organ dysfunction/failure)
Who is most vulnerable?
As of March 11, the Public Health Agency of Canada assessed the public health risk as LOW for the general population. But there is increased risk of more severe outcomes for those:

  • Aged 65 and over
  • With compromised immune systems
  • With underlying medical conditions or chronic diseases including:
  • diabetes
  • cancer
  • heart, renal or chronic lung disease (Ont.)
Those warnings follow the findings of that February WHO report on COVID-19 in China. According to the research team, the age difference among those affected was stark: 21.9 per cent of those over 80 years died, while just 2.4 per cent of all reported cases were children aged 18 and under (only 0.2 percent of those became critically ill).

As well, while 1.4 percent of COVID-19 patients with no other underlying conditions died, those with other conditions experienced much higher death rates:

  • cardiovascular disease (13.2%)
  • diabetes (8.4%)
  • hypertension (8.4%)
  • chronic respiratory disease (8%)
  • cancer (7.6%)
How have Canadians exposed to COVID-19 been affected?
As of March 12, there were 138 cases so far in Canada: B.C. (46), Alberta (19), Ontario (59), Quebec (13) and repatriated Canadians (1), per the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC):

  • One person has died of COVID-19
  • 13% of ill individuals were hospitalized
  • 67% were over the age of 40
  • 80% were travellers and 12% were close contacts of those travellers
