Trump approves Michigan’s disaster declaration

The White House announced Saturday that President Trump has approved Michigan’s request for a disaster declaration.

Yesterday, President Donald J. Trump declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Michigan and ordered federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected,” the White House said in a statement.

Because they knew they were working with a deadly virus, and believed the modellers and have great experience with zoonotic outbreaks and knew it would overwhelm their system? e.g. same reason that US is sending ships to New York (will it get there before the outbreak is over?) and Los Angeles?
Nah....people were dying in rapid numbers. IMO
I'm guessing that it was so huge it scared them.
Makes the lack of action in some areas of our country look stupid. IMO

This rush to make ventilators reminds me of my late friend who died of cancer at a young age. The 6 of us organized a benefit, and it raising money was new to me. Our leader gave us a figure as our goal that I thought was quite high and unrealistic. I saw it that you just plug away, advertise, reach people, and not worry about the final number you raise. The focus is more on the process of getting there, than worrying about goals. If you do well in your process, you get to that goal. We got to his goal, which surprised me. In summary, that's how I see the ventilator situation. Everyone know it is a problem. They are doing their best to fix the situation. If you want to complain, what can you do to help the situation?

A look inside the Javits Center’s new coronavirus hospital
Video at link. The makeshift hospital, dubbed the “Javits Center Medical Station” by FEMA, is set to open on Monday. Each room is outfitted with a bed, lamp, night table and humidifier to ease the breathing of patients suffering from the deadly respiratory disease.

There’s hand sanitizer — made by state prison inmates — on the night table, and each room is also equipped with a red backpack that holds an N95 respirator and more hand sanitizer for use once the patients are discharged.

Iran's coronavirus cases surpass 35,000; death toll over 2,500

Iran has reported 139 more coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total to 2,517.

At least 3,076 more cases were also recorded, bringing the total number of infected people to 35,409.

Well, that certainly looks familiar does it not! And btw, I cringe cringe cringe when I see they are supplying humidifiers! Would it not prolong the time an aerosol droplet infection is in the air? Am I missing something that someone can correct me on please as this is so disturbing.... it's kinda like my attitude would be if they said they are giving them all steroids... iykwim

I'm getting weary of folks slamming China's numbers. There are only 2 or three countries that have even an ounce of true reporting figures at this time...most here would agree?

The experts do not believe China or Iran's numbers so anyone comparing their numbers to ours is just grasping for straws.

Testing is one of the keys to success in this war against C19. The fact that the U.S. is now number one in confirmed cases is actually a good thing.

"Behind its success so far has been the most expansive and well-organized testing program in the world, combined with extensive efforts to isolate infected people and trace and quarantine their contacts. South Korea has tested more than 270,000 people, which amounts to more than 5200 tests per million inhabitants—more than any other country except tiny Bahrain, according to the Worldometer website. The United States has so far carried out 74 tests per 1 million inhabitants, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show"

I was worry about the humidifiers too. I thought the Abel's on the Diamond Princess had one and it was thought that it could have also contained or attracted the virus?

I agree - this thought of multiple patients on same ventilator has troubled me from the first suggestion. In my opinion it compromises all the patients using the same ventilator. MOO
I do understand this is unprecedented times and we have to be innovative, but I'm not certain this is the way to go

I was very very ignorant until I read the two pages with reasons why NOT to do this. As perhaps many are/were until they read this. It all makes sense why NOT to do it MOO. I'm going to reattach reasons in case others missed - and all of those associations to come together... there is a reason for such! And to get ALL those associations to come together on one publication in such a short time is a SHOUT OUT to the governors and others, hopefully they read it. I was hopeful that it was a panacea, but have jumped back over the fence. (Missing my old smilies :fence:)

The same issue existed with the Washington nursing home. EMS had been there 33 times in January and would put them on cpap....just blowing the virus around.

I wonder where the safest place on the planet is right now. I would have guessed a place like Iceland or Alaska, where it is cold and remote.
West Texas - My back yard Wilderness Area is pretty safe right now. I have tall fences, tall thick grass and weeds, and bare branches pecan trees shade.... Just be careful not to trip over a "dried dog poop land mine."......moo

Covid-19: New emergency powers for gardaí likely to be signed 'over the weekend'

(Ireland)

HEALTH MINISTER SIMON Harris has not yet signed any regulations that would give gardaí additional powers to enforce specific measures introduced in emergency legislation last week.

The emergency legislation set out that a person who may pass on Covid-19 to others but is refusing to self-isolate could be detained by gardaí under orders by a medical officer.

The legislation was passed by the Dáil and Seanad and subsequently signed into law by President Michael D Higgins.

The legislation also states that the minister could “make regulations prohibiting or restricting the holding of certain events or access to certain premises and to provide for enforcement measures”.

Other potential regulations relate to what gardaí could do to enforce an order by a medical officer to detain an individual with Covid-19.

This includes: “bringing a person to any place, breaking open of any premises, or any other action in which the use of force may be necessary.”

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, however, Harris said that no such regulations have been signed as yet but that this should happen “over the course of this weekend”.

As long as you have beer. Always wanted to visit West Texas. That's where all the outlaws used to hang out. :)

I do agree the disclosed numbers are not accurate in most country's including our own at least in the beginning. Thank goodness people took it on their own to get tests and go to private testing.
I absolutely believe Chinas numbers are way higher, as @Henry2326 said watch what they do not what they say, it is very telling. Jmo

ETA I wonder how many Chinese people died in the name of quarantine, welded in their homes or taken away forcefully...I cannot imagine what that would be like. Crematorys working 24/7 for weeks on end. I have read articles about this and will find links....for now jmo

I've read more than once a doctor saying the more humidity in the air, the quicker the virus drops to the ground. Consider it JMO until I can find a link.

Could the summer bring an end to COVID-19? | Live Science

When you have low humidity in the wintertime, that sphere of moisture tends to evaporate, which "means that the virus can hover in the air for a longer period of time because gravity won't pull it to the ground," Schaffner said. But in the summer, when you exhale a viral particle, the surrounding droplet doesn't evaporate, which means it will be heavier and gravity will pull it out of the air much more readily. In other words, "it doesn't hover as long as it does in the winter," making it less likely to infect the person close by, he said.

Ohhh the tv commercials are finally changing to those of the “in these difficult times” etc etc type.
It was getting a bit weird continuing to see the pre-pword ones that just didn’t seem to fit into reality.

I received a flyer in the mail for a garden center having an evening gathering and a band with food and drinks. I called to ask to speak to owner. They said not available. I then shared with the gal why I think a bad idea to have a gathering as such, even though the garden center is still open. She said the owner would not be interested in my opinion and hung up on me! 3 minutes later, the garden center owner called me back. She said that those flyers were purchased to be sent out in January. I relayed "perhaps a teaching moment for your employees?"

Hotels.com did one that I saw last night. With Captain Obvious sitting by himself... saying we'll be here when you are ready, perhaps not now. Something of that sort.

These Italian care workers decided to self quarantine with their elderly patients

Thirteen workers in an Italian retirement home have taken an unusual decision and decided to self-quarantine with the 60 elderly people they assist.

“We decided to self isolate ourselves because the Covid-19 situation here in Italy was getting worse."

"None of our guests are positive, thankfully.”
