Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #64

I really don't think that anyone is laughing at the US. Well, maybe Syria or the Taliban might be.
I think everyone else is shocked, and saddened. Maybe frustrated, too. imo
Thank you. I’m proud to be an American, although I consider myself a citizen of both the US and Australia. I shan’t forget the honorary Australian status y’all granted me while participating in an Australian crime thread. :) I’m sure it’s binding.

Don't worry too much over this. Europeans have never thought highly of Americans and probably never will, that's just a fact and long before Donald Trump was ever President. I have a very well rounded group of friends from the UK, Ireland, and Scotland and they have always talked crap about us. We are friends and have been for over 25 years BUT there will always be a difference, they put themselves very high above us so do not feel too bad over this. They are LOVING this, finally the pompous Americans brought down a notch. It's probably for the best that we can't travel for a long time, we'd never get a moments rest for even a pint without being given *advice* on all our flaws.

No offense to Europeans here but you know what I'm talking about. :)

IMO

Yikes, really? Mean-spirited friends, to be enjoying the fact so many people are suffering, grieving and dying.
Let me just say I am offended by your post. Nobody I know is enjoying any aspect of this, far less loving it and gloating about it.

Here is some hope for all of us. :)

Australian researchers expect to develop quick breath test for COVID-19
Australian scientists expect to develop a quick breath test for coronavirus within 12 to 15 months, in a potential boost to the safety of travel and public gatherings.

A team that developed and commercialised a rapid test to detect traces of homemade explosives is attempting to apply the same technology to viruses, including COVID-19.

If successful, an on-the-spot test for coronavirus, taking only a few minutes, could improve the safety of travel and public gatherings, particularly if efforts to create a vaccine fail or are long delayed.

“Within about six months we are expecting to have systems for (virus) testing in the US and in Australia and then to go through that first test phase and a rapid engineering cycle to then begin manufacturing in 12 to 15 months.”

Coronavirus: Lights to stay down on Broadway until next year

All 41 theatres that make up New York's performing heartland of Broadway will stay closed until next year.

They have been shut since March when they closed as part of the city's lockdown in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Now, in what could prove to be a terminal blow for some theatres, not to mention the careers of many who work in the industry, the Broadway league has said the curtain won't be raised on any productions for the rest of 2020.

Thomas Schumacher, chairman of the board at The Broadway League, said: "The alchemy of 1,000 strangers bonding into a single audience fuelling each performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theatres can safely host full houses.

"Every single member of our community is eager to get back to work sharing stories that inspire our audience through the transformative power of a shared live experience.

"The safety of our cast, crew, orchestra and audience is our highest priority and we look forward to returning to our stages only when it's safe to do so. One thing is for sure, when we return we will be stronger and more needed than ever."

But I thought outdoors was ok?

If people don’t act responsibly outdoors it’s not OK. And it ruins it for everyone, delaying reopening of indoor dining. The last sentence of the quoted paragraphs says it all IMO.

From the link:

“But, others scenes cannot continue, and we cannot move forward unless there is complete compliance,” he said. “So, unfortunately, the national situation, compounded by instances of knucklehead behavior here at home, are requiring us to hit pause on the restart of indoor dining for the foreseeable future.”

Murphy warned people last week the administration would crack down on those violating safety guidelines after the first round of viral videos surfaced from the Jersey Shore and other bar-heavy locations showing large unmasked crowds jammed into newly opened outdoor dining areas.

“I get it. By the way, we all get it. There is pent up emotion to get back outside. We all want to be out,” Murphy said a COVID-19 briefing last week. “But there is no reason to be a knucklehead. Keep your distances. Wear your masks. Be smart and courteousthe world just isn’t about you. It’s about all 9 million of us.”

The trouble is the knuckleheads aren't listening and are full on heading for herd immunity. Beach parties, fights, raves, street parties, boat parties, prom parties etc. How does society possibly stop that? It is impossible.

Have you got a link ?
Here’s a link showing that the risk of getting coronavirus can be the same in a bar or a church. I don’t think there have been stats comparing actual cases picked up in bars vs churches. That’s not really possible. But the risk is often the same.

Quoting:

And according to four doctors in Michigan, doing either of these seemingly unrelated activities puts you at an equally high risk of being exposed to the coronavirus: going to church and hitting the bar for happy hour.
<snip>
For similar reasons—aside from the alcohol consumption of course—the doctors determined that going to church is an extremely high-risk activity when it comes to your chances of being exposed to coronavirus. And while they gave it a rating of eight, there is one factor that would make going to church just as risky as going to a bar.

"If they add singing, then it's on a par with bars," Mimi Emig, MD, retired infectious disease specialist with Spectrum Health, told MLive. "People are going to hate that, but it's the truth."
One Thing Makes Churches and Bars Equally as High Risk for Coronavirus

This virus didn't start in the United States, with mass production of animal agriculture. The accepted start was at a "raw" market in China, with numerous animal species.

I don't see the comparison at all.
That's because there isn't one. Agriculture did not start CV19 to my knowledge. Maybe it started Swine Flu but not CV.

That's right. Most of my cooperative country has gone through leaps and bounds in just 3 months since the initial lockdown.

Our relatively small surge now, only in Victoria, is being jumped on really hard ... more federal staff being sent there today to help out, with all states assisting where they can. Massive testing regime, and possibility of locking down ten suburbs to try to prevent the spread.

There can be a huge improvement to the US situation, with good leadership and cooperation from all. Everyone needs to be on the same page - or cooperate regardless, if they are not.
So you're doing whack a mole too? Does that work?

I'm sure "wishes" for the US to implement the same testing/tracing regimen that has worked elsewhere will come true tomorrow...
That ship sailed long ago. We had a small window of opportunity back in March to get this right and we blew it. Americans, by and large, are poorly educated in matters of science and medicine, and particularly ignorant about the phenomenon of exponential spread of contagion. Then, rather than look to medical and research experts in infectious disease response and follow scientific guidance, we decided to listen to ill-informed politicians and Facebook.

It's too late to go back now. Life could have returned to relative normalcy by now as it has in other parts of the world, but it's not to be. Things are getting worse rather than better, which is a shame. It didn't have to be this way.

I think what many want here is not typical of what most people want in the US, from my experience anyway. People are not fearful or in denial but optimistic about the future. Not everyone thinks you should wear a mask when you leave your house. Masks, in my opinion or for when you are in situations where you can’t social distance. MOO
I agree. The lockdowns occur until a particular stage is achieved. Something like 14 days continual decrease in deaths is what brought us out of 3 months lockdown in the UK. Leicester is doing an additional 14 days as I understand.
MOO.

Sadly, I believe US has one big disadvantage and that is the lack of a National Health Service. However, I think you will come out of it state by state, but it is harder and will take longer because of the different state statistics and approaches. MOO.

Coronavirus update: Oregon, Kansas face masks; New Jersey casinos

Starting Wednesday, face masks in indoor public spaces will be required for all Oregonians.

In Kansas, facial coverings will be required starting Friday.

Meanwhile in New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy announced that the state would pause its planned reopening for indoor dining and banned smoking and drinking at Atlantic City casinos set to reopen this week. The Borgata casino dropped its plans to reopen soon. It had planned to hold an invitation-only "soft opening" on Thursday and open its doors to the general public starting July 6.
