FEMA Sends Texas 14 Mobile Morgues As Coronavirus Death Counts Rise

FEMA told TPM that it is sending 14 “mortuary support units” to Texas in response to a July 11 request from the state’s department of emergency management. The units, a FEMA spokesperson said, “are in transit and should arrive at the state by early next week.”

Local officials in Texas have been agitating for the mobile morgues as death counts rise.

“I am now having to order additional body bags and morgue trailers. People have to understand how real it is,” Barbara Canales, Judge of Texas’s Nueces County, told a Corpus Christi TV station last week.

The orders mark the pandemic’s severity. After weeks of rising cases, followed by rising hospitalizations, hard-hit states’ death rates have also started to rise — a lagging indicator that reflects the time it takes to die of the virus and the stress that healthcare systems face in treating waves of patients.

Just to clarify, the photo used in this talking points memo is from New York, not Texas. Also can we double check if “Muckrakers Scandal and Investigations” is a Websleuths verified news source?
I can’t find any other source that verifies 14 mortuary units have been sent to Texas.

The judge quoted in the memo said they ordered one, but it was not used and it was sent back.

R number 'lower than thought' before lockdown end

Some good news as it seems to be in short supply ATM.

"The rate of coronavirus infections in England was significantly reduced before lockdown eased in May, according to a government-commissioned study.

Imperial College research showed there were on average 13 positive cases for every 10,000 people and the reproduction number - or R - was 0.57.

The R number was estimated to be between 0.7 and 1 at the time.

The study of 120,000 volunteers also suggested young adults aged 18 to 24 were more likely to test positive.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the findings showed the impact of lockdown."

I read the same thing in the NY Times.
(Hopefully it is not behind a paywall for you. I was able to access it freely. I don't get why some things are paywalled there, and not here. If it is paywalled please let me know, and I will paraphrase. :) )

Officials in Texas said the refrigerated trucks were being readied because hospital morgues were filling up and nearing capacity, and additional space would be needed to store bodies.

Eight FEMA vehicles known as mortuary-support trailers were delivered to state officials in early April and 14 additional vehicles are en route, a FEMA spokesman said Tuesday. State and local leaders will determine where the additional trailers will be sent.

Grave Shortages of Protective Gear Flare Again as Covid Cases Surge
July 8
Five months into the pandemic, the U.S. still hasn’t solved the problem. The dearth of supplies is affecting a broad array of health facilities, renewing pleas for White House intervention.

“The inability to find personal protective equipment, known as P.P.E., is starting to impede other critical areas of medicine too. Neurologists, cardiologists and cancer specialists around the country have been unable to reopen their offices in recent weeks, leaving many patients without care, according to the American Medical Association and other doctor groups.

“We have kids living with grapefruit-sized abscesses for over three months who can’t eat or drink and there’s nothing we can do for them because we can’t get P.P.E.,” said Kay Kennel, the chief officer of Lubbock Kids Dental, a clinic serving low-income families in Texas that has a list of 50 children awaiting emergency surgery. “It’s been just horrible, and given the growing number of infections here, I’m afraid things are going to get worse.””

[...]

“It’s been chaos for us,” said Randy Bury, president of the Good Samaritan Society, which has struggled to keep its 200 nursing homes supplied with hand sanitizer, masks and gowns. “The supply chain in the United States is not healthy, and we’ve learned we cannot depend on the government.””

[...]

“Mr. Trump has resisted using federal powers to address the problem, saying in March that individual governors should find their own gear because “We’re not a shipping clerk.” With the National Strategic Stockpile depleted, states have been left to fend for themselves, though the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been distributing modest shipments of gear to nursing homes and long-term care facilities.”

[...]

““Nurses and health care workers are being forced to reuse masks with an unproven system,” said Deborah Burger, the organization’s co-president. “It’s almost five months into a pandemic in the richest country in the world and we’re putting people’s lives at risk because we don’t have enough P.P.E.”

The risks are not abstract. More than 900 health care workers have died of Covid-19, according to a tally by the organization, and Ms. Burger said many of the deaths have been linked to inadequate protective gear.

“There are tools at President Trump’s disposal and he has failed us,” she said. “These deaths are entirely preventable.”“

Hi Snoods,

I posted some articles here earlier, but didn’t pull any snippets; there may be something in my post here (or not):

I read the same thing in the NY Times.

Thank you SA! Yup, it’s paywalled for me. :) I do know some were delivered a few months ago but not used. I still can’t find anything using those parameters. Would you mind terribly copy and pasting for me? Not that I don’t believe you, of course I do, but sometimes things get misconstrued in our news today and I like to check the sources. I may be wrong, I’ve been wrong before, lol.

Now I do have my doubts about the above mentioned link “Muckrakers Scandals and Investigations, “lol. :p

I was just reading this myself. I like the little chart that shows the impact of lockdown on the R number. Reminds you how worthwhile it was

Thanks everyone! Perusing the articles so far, thank you Margarita, I see two counties who have ordered one on a wait and see basis. I promise I will more thoroughly read the articles you so kindly took the time to quote for me, but I must go to sleep now. It is annoying that every article posted about other states uses photos from New York. Night y’all.

No worries. What I posted is a cut and paste. Definitely about Texas. I guess 'be prepared' is the motto at the moment.

I posted a couple of days ago where a Texas doctor was really concerned and frazzled, in a video in an article. He had ten 'young' patients (his words) in serious covid trouble and only had beds for three.
I think the doctor was in Houston, but am not sure.

Note that, according to the article, Arizona and Florida are also requesting refrigerated morgue trailers.

It says Texas has them on standby, not that they have actually been delivered like the other article stated. Article has a pay wall for me too so I can only read a bit before it disappears with the paywall message covering it up. Perhaps you could cut and paste the relevant bit, if possible? I think it also said the state leaders would decide where the units were used.

ETA NVM I see it has been posted by SA.

Actually the original quote from the original article is this:

FEMA told TPM that it is sending 14 “mortuary support units” to Texas in response to a July 11 request from the state’s department of emergency management. The units, a FEMA spokesperson said, “are in transit and should arrive at the state by early next week.”

Looks like they're in the process of being delivered and are in transit. They have been requested from FEMA by the relevant people.

I don't think there is any contradiction there from the New York Times article which I previously quoted up thread as saying:

Eight FEMA vehicles known as mortuary-support trailers were delivered to state officials in early April and 14 additional vehicles are en route, a FEMA spokesman said Tuesday. State and local leaders will determine where the additional trailers will be sent.

Requests have been made by officials in Texas, Arizona and Florida for refrigerated morgue trailers in anticipation of a surge of deaths which might exceed capacity. Hopefully they won't all be needed, but I'm glad that they are trying to prepare, rather than waiting too long.

Yes I think it is surge capacity and I edited my post when I saw other posters had copy and pasted. The problem comes when they show photos of NY using and loading up bodies into a refrigerated unit with an article that is clearly just preparing for future surges. FEMA and the states are just doing their job by being prepared. It is similar to UK preparing for ice rinks to be used, yet thankfully not needing them. Let's hope it is the same for these states and they are rarely used like the hospital ships in NY and CA and temporary hospitals we prepared in the UK. Is the hospital ship still in LA, I wonder?

MOO.

Doubtful in a lawsuit it would be worth the paper it’s printed on.

I sat as a juror in a medical malpractice suit last fall here in Colorado. Fairly early in the trial we were told by the judge that any releases signed by the plaintiff (person suing the doctor) were not applicable. In other words, all those things you sign when you have a procedure are just a waste of paper.

Dangit I’m going to be tired at work tomorrow.

Tresir I do know the $17 million dollar pop up Covid hospital in Houston was closed down without ever being used.

From all of the links provided about Texas morgue trucks, I see the same quotes used from the same few counties.

The Texas Tribune reported that Nueces County, which includes Corpus Christi, has requested a refrigerated morgue trailer to accommodate a surge in deaths. (Nueces County has had 27 deaths. They ordered a truck but sent it back.) The picture of the lone truck never used and sent back is in several articles. This seems to be the same quote used throughout all articles.

Travis County is also in the process of procuring a similar trailer, and Cameron County bought a 53-foot refrigerated trailer in preparation for a surge. Just being prepared, not stacking up bodies.

This is what I see posted in all Houston and Texas related articles.

Harris County to close $17M medical shelter at NRG without using it

Thanks for the links but go to sleep Snooze zzzzzzzzz.
