Crafts To Do During Covid Restrictions

I was on my local library site this morning looking for genealogy classes. Didn’t find any but I noticed they had the craft grab bags. I was poking around to see if I could see what was in them but no luck. One was for kids and it looked like the other was for adults.

Fees here but I've heard very, very good courses:

That is the truth!! Last year I took all the free genealogy classes they had at the library. They haven’t started them back up yet. My good friend Kristine has done it for 20 years. She is building my tree and so far there are over 5,000 people on it! It’s a work in progress!!

My friend had some vinyl on hand she didn’t need. I was able to finish a little toy bag. I think Isabelle will enjoy having a bag with a clear window just like Mom.

Thank you. I don’t care for the kind generally sold for this purpose, so the last 3 or 4 I have made myself, always with a grapevine wreath as a base. So far, they have all held up for the 6 months or so that they get left out. I make them the same way I make them for my own door. In fact, her grave and my front door basically had the same winter wreath. I bring them home in good shape and I will probably tweak and re-use them next season.

My friend Karen is helping me put together a package for my friend Dawn. Karen made an appliquéd baby quilt and a flannel receiving blanket. Gender neutral and adorable! We are mailing everything on Wed.

Does refinishing furniture count as a craft? My kids love this old 1940s buffet that I redid years ago. Now that they both have their own apartments, they’d like to have one. Mine is in my foyer and I use it for bulky kitchen items. My buffet was dark brown and is now sage green.

My youngest bought an old beat up cabinet. It looks like it was one of those pieces from a little girls bedroom set. I sanded it down with the electric sander to get most of the old layers of paint off. We have had to stop / start even working in the garage due to cold and humidity.

We made some minor wood filler repairs then painted 2 coats of Kilz primer on it. Lightly sanded in between the layers. Today is finally warm enough to get the first finishing layer of paint on it. It is turning out nice. She is going to use steel wool on the original hardware. Then spray paint it silver.

Yes, I think it counts! I love doing chalk paint and distressing furniture, particularly if it looks like nothing special before. I got a China cabinet on a swap a few years ago that looked like a cheap faux antique. Once I was done painting and distressing it, it looked like a true antique and probably would fetch 3 X what I paid for it if I were to sell it.

This kind of work is an art, too!

Oh I'd love to see a photo. I bet it is very beautiful. I'm thinking about re-doing my bedroom furniture. It has unique pieces and after 12+ years I'm getting a little bored of the brown and tan. But that would be a huge investment of time so just an idea for the moment.

Oh that is lovely! So bright and cheerful! I have never done chalk paint or distressing. Although, after 6+ years and 3 moves, my green buffet is looking a bit distressed.

I got the first finish coat on the cabinet today. Flipped the doors over tonight and put a coat on them. Tomorrow in the daylight I’ll be able to sand and add a second coat. Then it’s on to the hardware.

I've always wanted to re-do my bedroom furniture that I inherited from my mother. It's so dark. I prefer lighter stained furniture.

Altho, I don't see that happening anywhere in the near future...

All painted. It looks reasonable. She wanted it to have character. Now to see if the steel wool will clean up the hardware. I looked at Ace Hardware yesterday and couldn’t find exact wood screws with square heads. I’m going to have to be careful on this old metal.

If they are rusty, try soaking them in white vinegar first... saves work.

Thanks for the tip! The hinges are soaking, The screws are small and look delicate. I hope I can salvage them as I doubt I can find exact replacements.

My friend lives near Atlanta and goes to this big discount fabric store. She’s always sending me stuff. This time she used a big Chewy box to send it. My little foster furbaby, Henley, decided to go thru the box, instead of around it. Apparently it passed the sniff test!
