18 Suspected Laced Drug Overdoses in Four Hours in New Haven

Emergency personnel were called to help one person near the city park as officials were holding a news conference Wednesday.

Alston says some victims were unconscious, some were nauseous, some were lethargic and some were in respiratory distress. Officials say anti-overdose drugs given to some victims did not work.

City officials said about 18 people were taken to hospitals Wednesday morning and three others fell ill Tuesday night. No deaths were reported.

Fire Chief John Alston Jr. says the victims apparently consumed K2 synthetic marijuana, but investigators will await toxicology test results to confirm that. Synthetic marijuana is plant material sprayed with chemicals that can mimic the high from real marijuana.

Alston says some victims were unconscious, some were nauseous, some were lethargic and some were in respiratory distress. Officials say anti-overdose drugs given to some victims did not work.

The small, shiny packets that claim to hold only scented potpourri look harmless. One, a bubble gum variety of Scooby Doo Snax, bears a classically goofy image of the clue-sniffing dog. Another, Barely Legal, hints at naughtiness with a cartoon rendering of a woman’s torso.

But the police and city health officials say that the contents, drugs known loosely as synthetic marijuana, or K2, is wholly illegal and dangerous. A particularly toxic batch was responsible for a mass overdose in Brooklyn over the weekend, sickening at least 56 people and leading to at least 15 arrests since Saturday.

Do people know they are buying fake weed or do they think it's the real thing?

I don't see how they could think it's a real thing. Not sure why it's even called synthetic marijuana, it's very misleading as it's something completely different.

Thus far there have been 76 of these overdoses in New Haven today, citywide, not just on the Green. Fortunately, no fatalities. Those who have seen addiction up close don’t find the Darwin reference humorous.

I have seen addiction up close. I find the Darwin reference silly. Please don't generalize or assume. Life is not black and white. We do not all react nor think or feel the same.

Is this the stuff sold in gas stations in some states? Or is this something you buy like an illegal drug. The natural selection is kind of a play on words like choose actual pot over this synthetic stuff. This is a weird ass situation.

Connecticut police announce arrest tied to spate of synthetic pot overdoses

John Parker, 53, was taken into custody Wednesday and was discovered with more than 30 bags of K2, the synthetic marijuana linked to more than 100 overdoses, police said.
    ...

Parker was detained on $225,000 bail. A public defender told The Associated Press there was no proof linking any drugs Parker may have had to the ODs.

His arrest marks the third in the investigation. Felix Melendez, 37, and an unidentified individual were separately taken into custody, Campbell said.
    ...

Police cautioned that the apprehensions don't guarantee that all the bad K2 has been found.
