David Bowie, 69, has died of cancer, Jan 2016

RIP David. I don't think we'll ever get someone quite like him again.

The first celebrity passing that truly shocked me.

OK, so I mentioned upthread that David's ex-wife Angie is in the UK Big Brother house. She was told the news of his death in the diary room and then she went and told some mad American woman (Tiffany someone, from some US reality show, I don't know who she is) that David had died. Unfortunately Tiffany assumed she meant David Gest who is also in the BB house and went completely over the top HYSTERICAL. Cue lots of confusion and swearing amongst all housemates until someone realised the mix up.....

I think David Bowie would have been amused by this, video is 6 mins long, best enjoyed over a nice cup of English tea!

In a night filled with laughter and candor, the SiriusXM Town Hall with Elton John highlights came during a more somber moment: when the 68-year-old John honored the late David Bowie. John jumped to his piano and covered “Space Oddity,” one of the many classics in Bowie’s catalogue. He then began the Q&A session, moderated by Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, reflecting on Bowie’s legacy and something beyond the music that stood out to him. “He made two albums without anyone knowing he was making them. He had, you know, obviously treatment for his illnesses without anyone knowing or anyone saying anything. And that is the mystique of the man." “They don’t make them like that anymore. We’ve lost a huge, huge talent that influenced so many people.”

Much much more at the link about Bowie, plus nice Q&A with Sir Elton.

And I just had to chuckle at myself, remembering that Elton John back in the '70s was my eyeglasses guru.

R.I.P. David. Loved Space Oddity, grew up with it. Liver Cancer is a terrible thing, my SIL had it.:rose::rose:

R.I.P. David Bowie

Forgot about Rebel, rebel. That's always been my song! And Young Americans was good too.

You remind me of the babe <3

Both my children loved Labyrinth. I heard them recite this phrase so many times! RIP Sir David. You wonderful, one of a kind legend of rock! What a sad, sad loss.

To me David Bowie is the Andy Warhol of music. The music so ahead of it's time. Always thought provoking and challenging, having to listen to each work time and time to "get it". Some "got it" while others didn't spend the time. Yet to me, I got it and losing him is like losing an innate part of my own past.

JMO's

jggordo, You've managed to put into words what I've been trying too. I haven't posted until now. I just couldn't find the words. Thank you.

Didn't realize there was so much Bowie I liked! I saw The Man Who Fell to Earth in the theater when it came out. My favorite songs: Space Oddity, Rebel, Rebel, Suffragette City, Young Americans, Heroes, Changes, All the Young Dudes, and Star Man.
F.Y.I., he would have been the other Davy Jones, but he changed his name- good thing!

What a sad week this has been. :tears:

Maybe Alan Rickman can join David Bowie in a duet in heaven. RIP to two great Brits we lost to Cancer this week. They were the same age as well...

Austin’s Bowie Street illegally changed to David Bowie Street, city lets it slide

Tributes to the late rock icon David Bowie have come from across the globe, but a vandalized street sign in Austin, TX revised to honor the rock legend may take the cake. Now, in addition to Willie Nelson Boulevard, someone has — illegally — put David Bowie Street on the map in Austin. And, apparently, the Austin Transportation Department has officially opted to let it slide and keep the sign up through January 19 in tribute.
