Thinking of everyone in the path of this severe weather the last 24hours and as it continues today.

(CNN)Storms unleashed devastating tornadoes late Friday and early Saturday across parts of the central and southern US including Kentucky, where the governor says the death toll will exceed 50 after "one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history."

More than 30 tornadoes have been reported in at least six states. A stretch of more than 200 miles from Arkansas through Kentucky might have been hit by one violent, long-track twister, CNN meteorologists say.

At least 50 DEAD in Kentucky tornado: Fears up to 100 people could have been killed | Daily Mail Online

At least 50 people are thought to have been killed in Kentucky, and there are multiple fatalities at an Amazon distribution center in Illinois, after at least 24 tornadoes ripped across the South and Midwest of the US on Friday.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear estimated the toll would 'exceed 50' but could reach 100 after 'some of the worst tornado damage' the state has experienced 'in a long time'.

'This has been one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history and some areas have been hit in ways that is hard to put into words,' Beshear told a news conference early on Saturday. 'I fear that there are more than 50 dead in Kentucky... probably closer to somewhere between 70 and 100, it's devastating.'

The governor added the town of Mayfield in far western Kentucky had been devastated and said the damage was 'some of the worst we've seen in a long time.' He said 'dozens' were believed killed in a Mayfield candle factory where 110 were working when the storm hit.

Beshear has declared a state of emergency and requested an immediate federal disaster declaration. A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management service said that rescue officials had not confirmed figures for deaths or injuries as of early Saturday.

Elsewhere, in southern Illinois, authorities said at least two were dead and up to 50 people were trapped after a roof collapsed at an Amazon warehouse near St. Louis late on Friday, when tornadoes and strong storms blew through the area.

At least two were killed and five were injured when a tornado shredded the roof of a nursing home in Monette in northern Arkansas and another person killed in Missouri.

A further three people were killed in the severe weather in Tennessee, Dean Flener, spokesman for the state's Emergency Management Agency said.

Horrific news. I'm devastated for those families living in the States that have been hit. How will they cope tonight and the coming days?

Sending prayers and loving thoughts to those suffering. I've never seen such heart breaking scenes and hope that Websleuthers are safe.

At least 70 feared dead in Kentucky as tornadoes rip through swaths of U.S. (nbcnews.com)

“We will rebuild, we are strong, resilient people," Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear told a news conference.

More than 70 people are feared dead after a catastrophic series of tornadoes ripped through Kentucky and other states late Friday and early Saturday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said.

"It's devastating," Beshear told a news conference early Saturday, adding that he had declared a state of emergency and activated 181 guardsmen from the National Guard, a number that is expected to go up as requests for help continue to come.

"We believe our death toll from this event is north of 70 Kentuckians and may end of exceeding 100 before the day is done ," he said. "We will make it through this," he added. "We will rebuild, we are strong, resilient people."

Beshear said he expects this tornado to be the deadliest one to ever hit Kentucky...

'Quad-State Tornado' crossed four states in four hours, a rare December tornado (nbcnews.com)

The National Weather Service will confirm if a single tornado tracked over 200 miles from Arkansas to Kentucky, which could set the record for longest tornado in U.S. history.

One of the deadly tornadoes that erupted under the cloak of darkness overnight Friday into the early hours of Saturday, leaving at least 70 dead, may have set the record for the longest continuous tornado in American history.

The devastating outbreak, which included more than 30 tornado reports across six states stretching across the Mississippi Valley, Southeast and Midwest, is also an extremely rare event this late into the year.

One tornado, being called the "Quad-State Tornado" ripped across four states in four hours (Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky), slamming communities such as Monette, Arkansas, and Mayfield, Kentucky, which were two of the hardest hit towns...

This is so horrific! I had CNN on earlier and couldn’t believe the amount of damage & devastation. I hope rescue workers are able to save those buried in rubble but still alive. Having lived through the horror of 9/11 fairly up close and personal, I’m sure the rescue professionals and volunteers will need emotional support. They’re likely to see things they never thought they’d have to see. It’s just so sad.

This is just unbelievable...and those poor people working at the candle factory, and their loved ones. This must be one of the worst days of their lives. Praying for more survivors to be found, and for the ones that have lost dear ones during the Christmas season :(

Calamitous event.

What is the best way to help? either for those in the state, or further afield in the U.S.A., or those in other countries?

was following this last night and watching the radar was horrific seeing Mayfield take a direct hit, the radar was showing such a strong hook echo with a debris ball and the CC was showing drop outs meaning there was significant debris, when you see this stuff on radar you just know that people have to get below ground to try and survive

the stories coming out of the candle stick factory have been hard to listen to, the poor lady who live-streamed on facebook to try and get help to the poor man who rushed there to look for his wife and couldn't find her :(
