A former Orange County teacher has been awarded $50,000 after a court ruled that the Laguna Beach Unified School District violated her privacy by allowing reports to spread that she had been accused of coming to school drunk.

'A jury found the district 'violated Barbara Joan McKnight's right to privacy' back in December of 2010 by allowing a confidential claim that she had come to school under the influence of alcohol to be leaked, turning what should have been a private personnel matter into a public one.

'Jurors interviewed after the trial, however, indicated that no one other than McKnight was found to have released confidential information, according to a statement the district released Tuesday.'

The attorney for former teacher Barbara Joan McKnight called the verdict a 'major victory.'
