I think the State Department is just being careful. Information is getting out there. But if the State Dept issues a serious warning, that could crush D.R.'s economy. We don't want that, especially since we don't know what exactly is going on. Personally, I would stay away for now.

No, but some of the violence and dismissive attitude in relation to DR is coming to light.

I am sure Tammy Lawrence-Daley is glad to see some type of action/acknowledgement being done.

A Delaware woman was expecting her most recent vacation to be filled with relaxation and fun, but it soon turned into a nightmare when she was brutally attacked and left to die in the resort’s basement.

This one seems like a different case - a death from violence or accident, not a food/beverage issue, but falls under the category of tourist death = heart attack. As we've seen from the stats on the thread previously, "natural causes" are not counted but accidents, suicides, etc are. So, it benefits the tourism industry to label just about any tourist death "heart attack."

SOSÚA, Dominican Republic — A New Jersey man reportedly died in the Dominican Republic last week -- becoming the latest American tourist to pass away while vacationing in the Caribbean country in roughly the last year.

ABC News reports Joseph Allen, 55, was found lifeless in his hotel room on June 13 at a resort in Sosúa. He was reportedly on a trip to celebrate a friend's birthday.

According to ABC News, Allen had complained about being hot at the pool and went to his room for a shower -- but still wasn't feeling fell afterward and decided to lie down for the night. When his friends asked the hotel for a wellness check the next morning, he was dead.

The woman said she was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a bacterial blood infection.
She was given antibiotics but the cause of the illness was still a mystery.

Sepsis Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection. The body normally releases chemicals into the bloodstream to fight an infection.

A workmate was in Punta Cana last year and said Everyone was trying to push this stuff on you to drink. Supposedly it’s an aphrodisic. Their taxi driver wanted them to drink some, the bellaman asked if they wanted it, anytime they went out someone was trying to sell them it. She said they told her it was made with wood herbs. She taste some & said was strong like a red wine cough syrup and she didnt like it at all.

She made it sound like it was all home brew!

They also drank “liberally”from their AI minibar with the big bottles of liquor but didn’t think they were poisoned.

Maybe they should also compare the illnesses reported in other AI’s such as in Jamaica, Cancun, Baja.

I am guessing the heart attacks and other illnesses we are seeing in recent reports would fall under "natural causes" at this point and are not included in the stat quoted.

Agreed. SMH. Natural causes aren't their fault. Understandable for sure on their part. Marketing. And you can make statistics do just about anything you wish.

What business wouldn't do its best to present the best of everything? SMH. Good food, wonderful amenities, first-class hotel, fine staff, yadda, yadda. And yes, a heart attack is about as natural as it gets -- especially if that's what the examiner is looking to find. I'm no doctor, but possibly some bad drugs or additives could result in a heart attack for an anonymous victim.

One does not have to be of large orientation to have heart disease. Any one of the individuals that have allegedly died from a " heart attack" could have had a family history of heart disease lending them more susceptible. Ones risk for heart disease can increase based on genetics, age, ethnicity, sex, obesity, diet, stress, comorbidities etc.

I keep seeing a common issue in the DR which is bacteria, viruses, and parasites all of which are leading causes of endocarditis and in turn can lead to a cardiac incident, stroke, PE, etc.

And he could well be exposed to bacteria, viruses, and parasites in the USA, and parasites are only rarely assiciated with endocarditis.

His course isn’t typical for endocarditis.

But there’s no use trying to discuss his health - that’s for someone with acess to his medical records, and an examination with laboraotory and imaging studies.

On June 11, about six members of the group got sick after having dinner at the same restaurant, Deer Creek Public Schools Superintendent Ranet Tippens told The Oklahoman. Most of the travelers did not fall ill, and most of them are back in the U.S.
The symptoms appeared to be similar to some of the other publicized cases of tourists who have become sick in the Dominican Republic.

“I just woke up, and my stomach was cramping and I was sweating,” Bennet Hill told KOCO-TV. “I was freezing.”

“We’ve been hooked up to IVs since we first got here with antibiotics, just getting hydrated,” Hill continued. “Anti-nausea medicine, all this stuff because we were just so dehydrated."

The legal drinking age in Punta Cana and the rest of the Dominican Republic is 18.
All-Inclusive Resorts
They follow the legal requirements, although occasionally someone younger who is with parents may get served. However, colored bands indicate whether the traveler is over 18.
