I once had one Absolut vodka tonic at a small dive bar in Spain. I passed out that night and spent the next day in the bathroom and passed out twice more. I always said the vodka in the bottle must have been substituted with some homemade stuff. Never felt so sick in my life :(

Sorry to hear that happened to you and I agree that is likely what occurred in the vodka you consumed. Most likely they were trying to save money and put something else in it.

There is a TV show I used to watch that documented how people still make moonshine today and there are so many things that can go wrong that can make people ill or worse.

This is a link that describes the TV show where I watched a few episodes of.
    Moonshiners (TV series) - Wikipedia

Starting with the pipes and materials they use to make their "Stills". Some people in the backwoods end up using the wrong kind of metal piping where metal poisoning can occur as they boil the liquid. Also they will sometimes use toxic sealants to seal up any leaks in their tubing.

When done right, some people like drinking homemade liquor but because it is so unregulated with no controls there is opportunity for toxic metals or poisonous chemicals to get into the batch.

I once dabbled in making wine and learned quite a bit about the procedure. One thing I learned was it was very important to use the right equipment, try to clean and sterilize everything, and to not use anything that can end up putting bad chemicals or deposits into the "mash" liquid.

Some people are not nearly as careful and considerate as others when making homemade shine. Especially if they are just making it for resale.

It's most likely not connected but there is another strange death of a young American couple in a resort in Fiji. Authorities seem to have no clue as to what exactly killed them, but influenza has been ruled out.

I'm a longtime lurker and rarely post, but I've been following these cases closely because I've been to the Bahia Principe in La Romana twice (most recently about 6 months ago), which is where the 3 people have recently been found dead. I felt completely safe both times I was there (although we didn't stay out super late and didn't drink alcohol from the minibar), but I would definitely think twice about going back now that all this has been reported.

Just to clarify, from what I can tell, Orlando and Portia were vacationing at a different Bahia Principe in Samana, on the other side of the island. Still, it's a pretty big coincidence to have all these things tied to the same resort. I used to feel safe vacationing in the Caribbean, but anymore I think I'll stay stateside!

New article about recent tourist deaths in Dominican Republic. There's a brief mention at the end of the article about OM and PR, but doesn't provide any new information about their case. I'll post it in the other folks' threads also, since it's more about them.

Perhaps this will help any OM/PR investigation along.

    Wow!
"As soon as we came back to the room, we noticed it smelled like somebody had dumped paint everywhere," said Knull. "We were drooling excessively. My eyes would not stop watering."

She continued: "That night, we both woke up soaked in sweat at like four in the morning and kind of terrified. And we booked a flight home before the sun came up."

They said that once back home in the United States, a doctor diagnosed “likely organophosphate poisoning,” referring to pesticides. Knull speculated the chemicals are used on plants around the property."

That extra bit of info about the hemorrhaging and enlarged hearts is very interesting. Definitely points to a poison or toxin instead of a natural cause.

Woman claims she vomited BLOOD after taking ill at same resort where three US tourists died | Daily Mail Online

A woman who claims to have vomited blood after drinking a soda from the minibar of her room in the same Dominican Republic hotel where three US tourists have died says she believes someone may be targeting guests.

Awilda Montes, 43, visited the Bahia Principe La Romana last year with her ex-boyfriend.

The woman from Queens said that she took a 7 UP from her minibar fridge but that afterwards, she started feeling sick.

She vomited blood and had chemical burns inside her mouth which required medical treatment.

At the time, she thought she had mistakenly drank bleach that was left behind by housekeeping.

Now, in light of the deaths of a Pennsylvania woman and a couple from Maryland at the same resort, she fears there may be a more sinister explanation.

A Maryland woman said that three American tourists dying at a Dominican Republic resort has her questioning the circumstances of her husband’s death in that country.

Dawn McCoy said she does not believe it’s a coincidence that her husband died in 2018 of pulmonary edema and a heart attack — much like the three Grand Bahía Príncipe resort guests who died within a week of each other, news station WTOP reported.

“I started seeing all these other people that were dying of the same exact causes, which made me start to second guess,” McCoy told the news station.

For her wedding anniversary, she visited the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana last July along with her husband, David Harrison, and son.

She said her husband started feeling sick one night before he went to bed. He later woke up in the middle of the night covered in sweat.

“He couldn’t sit up, and he was making noises that you couldn’t make out,” McCoy said.

She said she tried to talk to him “but all he could do was mumble.”

“He was struggling quite a bit to get out of bed and to talk,” she said.

McCoy called the hotel doctor to the room but her husband didn’t survive.

Wonder if toxicology screens were done in the DR and whether they will be “doctored”? Hoping retesting was done in the US.

CBS news tonight had their reporter on the tourist deaths standing near an ocean cliff that looked just like the churn pool the car went in

I don't think I am going to visit there any time soon. Let's actually change that to never.
