If humanitarians from other areas want to go into those regions to help then let them, but they need to be quarantined before they return to non-infected countries so the disease does not keep spreading outside of West Africa.

UBM, this x 100! I'm glad that so many want to go and give of their time and knowledge to help. It's a totally selfless act . Add the risk to themselves and they're literal heroes. But quarantine them all before they return home is the only way.

Do you mean that the USA should not be making any official support efforts as part of the WHO and UN response?

My thinking is this is not just a USA problem, this is a world issue. I can't see any way around a quarantine in the affected countries and possibly the entire African continent to halt the spread of this virus. I'm not talking a lifetime quarantine, I'm talking until Ebola comes under control.

One of my bigger issues is people doing what they should (intentionally or unintentionally) to comply with the program. Assuming Duncan didn't do anything, he was in denial. ( The I didn't know defense)

It takes eliminating one of three things to stop a biological threat.

1. The biological agent itself, biological, chemical or viral.

2. Eliminating the carrier be it human, air, water, sprayed or whatever.

3. Removing the potential victim or one who would be affected.

Eliminate any one of the three and you eliminate the threat.

Source is training from Army Biological triage and warfare training. (The usual MOO)

If he read it, I bet the story from the LA Times yesterday skeered Jenkins. What a fool.

No disrespect intended to you Lyra but I am so tired of people/countries etc expecting the US to somehow save the world...I know you do not live here so maybe it is hard to understand but we have a really bad unemployment recession going on right now. Tons of folks out of work, tons of folks on food stamps, not enough of anything to go around..and I wont even go into a lot of the problems, but honestly we cannot/will not or somehow dont even take care of our own people like we need to and for us to be trying to save everyone else is well...ridiculous.
I also don't know if anyone else has thought about this, but if this (Ebola) does get crazy I will bet money that our insurance premiums will sky rocket and in fact you may even have to start paying extra for (Infectious disease control) Much like you do for dental and vision on many insurances. Someone is going to have to pay for all of this...it isn't really being written off. JMO

And, may I add, isn't it about time Africa started taking care of itself after years of aid in some form or another?

I don't know if his has been posted before, very good videos and I just read thi article. Duncan must be in the last stages of the disease because his family was to upset to watch him again on video. From pictures I have seen, (of others dying) the hemmorage bubbles the skin and huge sores, the ventilator also would be scary. This must be so bad. Even if he survives will he ever be the same as critical as he is? Where the other survivors this bad? JMOO.

And in fact some believe it is all of the "foreign aid" that has caused the explosion of diseases like HIV and Ebola in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Before widespread vaccinations, anti-biotics, and food distribution the population was MUCH lower in Africa and also much more sparse. Some scientists believe that HIV and Ebola did occasionally crop up BUT the village populations were much smaller and the outbreaks would only effect an isolated village or two and then die out.

Now that the population of Africa has grown tremendously, now that there are huge overcrowded cities (that never existed before the introduction of western medicine and farming) those diseases hit larger cities, spread rapidly, and travel fast to other regions.

Bill Gates is on a mission to increase the population of Africa even more, so yeah, he owes it to them to donate more.

Dont even get me started on that one... like the help we gave with poisoned vaccines etc... Another forum another day.. But yes Totally agree with your post!

No one has suggested that the USA should do this alone - many other countries are already contributing. This calls for a concertd GLOBAL effort. China, Italy, France and Cuba are already over there and many other countries have made pledges.

The recession is also a global phenomenon which I think everyone can sympathise with.

I was not sure whether Sonya was suggesting that America should withdraw from the multi-national effort altogether and leave it to the other countries.

BBM. Yes, I am hung up on this issue and don't understand why others don't think family planning is an issue in diseased and poverty stricken countries. It's the same here in the USA with those on welfare and living in slums having more and more kids, kids whose future is pretty much doomed from the start. Same in Libera. This Louise lady has at least 5 from various fathers. So, I think birth control is a huge issue.

I respect others religious beliefs, so don't want to offend. Mr. Duncan will most certainly be welcomed to heaven for the care and selfless compassion he showed for the dying pregnant woman he helped. Bless his heart.
