In a total victory for the government, the jury found Chapo guilty of all 10 counts of the indictment. On the top criminal enterprise charge, the jury said prosecutors proved 25 out of 27 violations.

#BREAKING @vicenews: The Chapo verdict is *GUILTY* on all counts.

After 13 long weeks, the trial is over.

Chapo now faces a mandatory sentence of life with no parole in a US federal prison.

Chapo looked a bit stunned as the verdict was read. He locked eyes with his wife Emma Coronel as he was being escorted out of the courtroom and nodded at her several times. She was fighting back tears as she flashed him a thumbs up.

Chapo looked a little stunned sitting with his lawyers and listening to the guilty verdicts come in through translation. When the verdict was complete, Chapo glanced at his wife Emma Coronel. With tears in her eyes, she flashed him a thumbs up.

The jurors seemed to be avoiding eye contact with Chapo. The defense asked the judge to poll each of the 12 jurors to confirm the accuracy of the verdict. Each said "yes" in quick succession, no hesitation.

Well...I was wrong- more tweets from the reporters:

Though reaching a verdict took longer than many had expected, this is a full triumph for prosecutors and their case.

    Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 1h1 hour ago
Out of 53 boxes the jury had to check, they found against Chapo in 51 of them. The only two charges they could agree on were two of the 27 violations in the top charge of continuing criminal enterprise.

    Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 1h1 hour ago
The 1st of those violations accused Chapo of shipping 19 tons of coke on the tanker Gatun that was seized by the US Coast Guard off the shores of Panama in March 2007. The 2nd alleged he smuggled 409 kgs of weed in panga boats that were captured in SoCal in January 2012.

    Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 1h1 hour ago
Other than that, the jury found Chapo guilty of the CCE, 7 drug conspiracy counts, a charge of using firearms to further his drug operation and a money laundering charge.

    Alan Feuer‏ @alanfeuer 50m50 minutes ago
Donoghue called the verdict a victory for US law enforcement, for Mexico where 100k people had lost their lives to drug violence and for families who had lost someone to “the black hole of addiction.”

That said, Lichtman noted that the defense team does plan an appeal. He said the team's cross-examinations were "overly restricted." He also mentioned the extradition process by which Chapo was brought to trial in Brooklyn might be an avenue for appeal.

Answering a question from the press, one of the other lawyers, Bill Purpura, said that Chapo had expected today's result was "prepared" for it. Purpura said Chapo was "strong."

My story @vicenews on the guilty verdict for El Chapo

BREAKING: EL CHAPO FOUND GUILTY, FACES LIFE IN A U.S. PRISON

    Feb 12, 2019

"BROOKLYN, New York — After nearly three months of drama and intrigue, the epic trial of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán ended Tuesday when the jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict on all 10 counts of the Sinaloa cartel leader’s federal indictment.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated for six days before convicting the 61-year-old Mexican drug kingpin on a litany of charges related to drug smuggling, murder, money laundering, and weapons possession. He now faces a mandatory sentence of life in U.S. federal prison with no chance for parole.

Chapo, dressed in a black suit with a gray shirt and black tie, sat with a blank stare on his face as the verdict was read. He appeared stunned. As he was escorted out of the courtroom by guards, he locked eyes with his beauty queen wife, Emma Coronel, who sat in the gallery in a lime green jacket. Chapo nodded his head and she flashed him a thumbs up, visibly holding back tears.

Speaking outside the courthouse after the verdict was read, U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said, “His conviction is a victory for every American family who lost a loved one to the black hole of drug addiction.”

Defense lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman, speaking outside the courthouse shortly after, said: “We fought like hell. We fought like complete savages and left it all on the battlefield.”

He added: “Of course we're going to appeal.”..."

The most memorable moment for me today was when Chapo was escorted into the courtroom before the verdict. It was packed. The atmosphere was electric. Chapo was in his suit and tie, and he paused. He didn't smile but he looked pleased, like he knew he was the star of the show.

Some prosecutors were visibly moved by the jury's decision. Even though they had expected a guilty verdict, Chapo's lawyers were also emotional. The sense of moment--the end of the marathon after more than three months--was palpable all around.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 4h4 hours ago
This morning was slow. Only a handful of reporters were in the courtroom at 12:01pm when the judge's clerk came to tell the lawyers there was a verdict. I literally sprinted downstairs the press room — running against the tide of reporters headed upstairs — to report the news.

After sprinting back upstairs and an agonizingly long wait in the security line, I was back in the courtroom. The US Attorney was there. Chapo's lawyers were shaking hands with the prosecution and wishing them well. One younger member of the defense sat w/ her head in her hands.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
The buzz in the courtroom was palpable. It felt like a grand finale. The burly, bearded US Marshal in charge of security warned everyone to stay seated during the reading of the verdict. A reporter thanked him for everything, he thanked us back. There was spontaneous applause.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Chapo enters the courtroom through a side door behind the defense table. You could hear him before you could see him — the chains were clanking as the US Marshals took off his shackles. Then he stepped out, in a black suit, grey shirt, and black tie. All eyes were on him.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
There was a loooong pause while we waited for the jurors to line up and take their seats. Chapo was inscrutable, w/ a translator on one side and his attorneys on the other. As the jurors entered, avoiding Chapo's gaze, a sketch artist spilled her art supplies and muttered "S***!"

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Judge Cogan read the verdict with no emotion in his voice. He just ran through the charges, count by count: Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. It was devastating for the defense and a triumph for the prosecution.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
As I said earlier, Chapo looked a bit stunned. His lawyers surely warned him what was coming, maybe he was just having trouble following what was happening through the translator. He stood to be escorted out of the courtroom and, as always, he looked for his wife in the gallery.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Emma Coronel was wearing a lime green jacket. She managed to hold back her tears Chapo left the courtroom. She sat right behind me for most of the trial, and I chatted with her occasionally. She looked over at me and her eyes were red and teary. I just gave her a slight nod.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
After that, it was another mad dash down to the press room to update our breaking story on the verdict and connect with our TV crew. When I headed outside for the press conference, it was madness. Soldiers in full battle gear with automatic rifles. A blizzard. A horde of media.

The look on my face while navigating an ice storm and the post-verdict media scrum around Chapo’s lawyers…

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
When Chapo's lawyers spoke about fighting a battle in this case, it was only mild hyperbole. The trial was all-consuming. They put in crazy long hours. At least one of them went through a personal crisis. A guilty verdict was expected, but today was still emotional for them.

    Keegan Hamilton‏Verified account @keegan_hamilton 3h3 hours ago
Some folks on the government side have been chasing Chapo for over a decade. Today was the culmination of years of hard work and three intense months. They didn't speak with the press, but you could see the relief and the thrill of victory on their faces as the verdict was read.
