The Parkland school shooter started throwing up and hyperventilating after being arrested

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/broward/article209356519.html

Minutes after being arrested for a gruesome killing spree, the Parkland school shooter had trouble standing up, began to heave and "vomited clear fluid" as a witness prepared to identify him, according to a police report written by the officer who detained him.

When pinpointed as the man who attacked Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland with a semiautomatic rifle earlier that day, Nikolas Cruz then "began to hyperventilate," the incident report states. Paramedics were called as a precaution, according to the report, which was released Thursday by Coconut Creek police.

BSO deputies took cover during Parkland massacre

"I was advised by an unknown BSO Deputy taking cover behind a tree, 'he is on the third floor,' " wrote Coral Springs officer Bryan Wilkins in a report recounting his arrival at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14 and his subsequent actions to try to find the shooter and save lives.

Wilkins wrote that he arrived at Stoneman Douglas within two minutes of learning it was being shot up. BSO was already there.

"I saw approximately four Broward County Sheriff's Office vehicles parked [on the road outside the school] ... with their personnel taking up exterior positions behind their vehicles," Wilkins wrote in the report. "I drove up just west of the campus building 1200, exited my vehicle, grabbed my AR-15 rifle and donned on my tactical/medical gear."

That's when he encountered the BSO deputy behind the tree who said he knew where Cruz was.

Wilkins says he and Coral Springs Detective Gil Monzon, along with an "unknown BSO Deputy," then approached the freshman building where Cruz killed 17 people. They could see bullet holes in the windows and doors.

One Margate police officer who also responded to Stoneman Douglas wrote that when he arrived, a BSO deputy told him, "Standby SWAT is on the way," according to a report released by the Margate Police Department last week.

"I informed the deputy that I was a SRT/SWAT operator and there was no time to wait," Margate officer Chad Ryen wrote. "Based on my training and experience, I made the determination to make entry into the school.

Nikolas Cruz waives right to speedy trial

"Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz appeared in court on Friday and waived his right to a speedy trial

Cruz sat mute at the defense lawyers’ table with his head bowed during the brief hearing in Fort Lauderdale.

Cruz waived his right to a speedy trial through his attorney Melisa McNeill. Broward County Judge Elizabeth Scherer scheduled the next hearing for 1:30 p.m. May 25.

No trial date has been set....

Cruz’s defense team has said there is no question he did it, and he’s willing to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty.

Defense attorney Howard Finkelstein said he would prefer his client take a plea and serve 34 consecutive life sentences, one for each of the counts on which Cruz has been indicted.

The prosecution had expressed frustration after listening to the defense’s request.

“The state of Florida is not allowing Mr. Cruz to choose his own punishment,” Assistant State Attorney Shari Tate told the court at a previous hearing...."

Why Nikolas Cruz's death penalty trial would be complicated (with clip)

"(CNN)Nikolas Cruz massacred 17 people in February at his former high school in Florida. The question now is does he live or die?

Broward County prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty despite his attorney's offer of a guilty plea in exchange for a life sentence.

If prosecutors seek the death penalty, Cruz will join a short list of mass shooting suspects who've faced their victims in court. Of the 10 deadliest shootings in recent US history, Cruz is the only one who was captured alive....

Here's how Cruz's death penalty trial would unfold:..."

Sorry, I didn't realize Holmes was charged with 2 counts of murder per person. So he was charged with 24 counts of murder but the number of victims was 12, which means Holmes' shooting didn't make it into 10 deadliest.
But still, it's a similar case. Prosecutor went for a death penalty, and couldn't get it because of Holmes' mental health issues. Same thing could very well happen with Cruz.

Wow, I didn't realize assistant coach run into the building un-armed to confront the shooter and was then killed. What an amazing act of heroism.
"Ten people lay dead or dying on the first floor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s freshman building when assistant football coach Aaron Feis rushed across campus and burst through the structure’s west door to confront Nikolas Cruz."

I see no advantage to spending all that taxpayer money on a death penalty trial.
Odds are astronomical that he would be sentenced to death.
Odds are even more absurd that he would ever be executed.
"Choosing his own punishment" or not, let him serve 34 life sentences and get it over with.
At some point you have to realize that it's not worth the battle just to have him be sentenced to death.
As long as he is NEVER let out, that should be more than enough.

Parkland shooting victim's father sues former school resource officer, others

SRO comes in for special scrutiny in lawsuit

The father of Meadow Pollack, one of the students killed in the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Monday against former Broward County Sheriff's Deputy Scot Peterson and others.

Also listed as defendants are Nikolas Cruz, the shooter who killed 14 students and three teachers on February 14 at Stoneman Douglas High School; the estate of his mother, Lynda Cruz; James Snead and Kimberly Snead, a couple who let Cruz live with them after his mother's death; and three mental health centers where Cruz was treated.

Death Penalty please. He was/is very aware of what he did and is doing now. Yes it’s my opine that he is not as mentally ill as he is wanting to appear.

He’s a murderer plan and simple.

Parkland father files lawsuit against 'coward' school resource officer
"I want to expose that coward so bad," Andrew Pollack tweeted of Scot Peterson, who resigned amid an investigation into the Feb. 14 shooting.

A father whose daughter was killed in the Feb. 14 mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against not only the accused gunman, but the school resource officer who stayed outside while the rampage took place.

In his suit filed Monday in Broward Circuit Court, Andrew Pollack names Scot Peterson, the armed sheriff's deputy assigned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, as a defendant...

I don't think this lawsuit for the school resource officer will get anywhere. Police aren't obligated to protect you.

"The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm, even a woman who had obtained a court-issued protective order against a violent husband making an arrest mandatory for a violation."

I believe that he is fully aware of what he was doing, but if he is agreeing to plead guilty without chances of getting out, I fail to see what going for a death penalty will accomplish. They quite possibly won't get the death penalty in the end, just like happened in James Holmes' trial.

I tend to agree with you on this point. I think the likelihood of the state securing the death penalty is slim to none considering NC has a documented history of mental illness. I think it would be a waste of time and money to go that route, of course I can understand if the prosecution is making that decision based on the families of the victim's desire to do so. Although, I don't think I've heard the state offer their reasoning behind it.

According to an arrest warrant issued Tuesday, Cruz, 18, violated his probation April 28 by operating a Kia SUV without a driver's license and being close to a school where he was not enrolled.

The warrant said he was about 25 feet from the west parking lot of Park Vista Community High School in Lake Worth, Florida.

His assets are estimated at 28k, nowhere near some of the figures thrown around. So he is allowed to keep his public defender.

There was an article about the lawsuit his mom won against the doctor and/or hospital that had something to do with his dad’s death, and the outcome was that she won. The article stated the award was to be placed into a trust fund for the two sons. The attorney involved said he didn’t remember the specifics but that he must have been really concerned about how the money would be handled if he made that recommendation.

So, my question is....what happened to that trust fund?

Especially when you consider that trained, armed law enforcement officers were hesitating to go in or simply wouldn’t go in at all.

This is so bizarre yet intriguing. This kid is essentially proving how useless the criminal court system can be sometimes. If he had chosen to enter that school (the one he was parked by) with a gun and shoot it up, he would have been able to do it, and then everyone would be screaming about how something should have been done.

ZC is clearly used to testing every rule and boundary set for him and used to getting away with anything.
