Parkland Shooting Survivor Loses Self to Suicide; Community Mourns Loss
    PUBLISHED March 22, 2019 @8:26 AM
PARKLAND, Fla. — The Parkland community is grieving another loss. A former Stoneman Douglas student who survived the mass shooting last year has taken her own life.

On February 14, 2018, 17 people lost their lives in a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland — but 19-year-old Sydney Aiello survived.

Aiello's mother said Sydney felt survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder after being on campus the day of the shooting last year.

Aiello was described as a vibrant young woman who was focused on her grades and a joy to be around. Cara Aiello said her daughter was on campus the day of the shooting but not in Freshman Building. She said Sydney struggled with survivor’s guilt and was recently diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Cara said Sydney struggled to attend college classes because she was afraid of being in a classroom and was often sad recently but never asked for help before she killed herself.

Nikolas Cruz back in court as defense attorney, judge have contentious exchange (with clip)
Judge to Parkland school shooter's lawyer: 'You are being disrespectful'

    March 22, 2019

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The suspect in last year's Parkland school shooting massacre was back in court Friday as his defense attorney sparred with the judge.

Nikolas Cruz was in a Broward County courtroom Friday morning for a status hearing, but his public defender took center stage during a contentious exchange with Judge Elizabeth Scherer.

The exchange took place as assistant public defender Melissa McNeill sought to have Scherer force prosecutors to provide all body-camera footage related to the case within 10 days.

    Here's what was said:...

Cruz's trial is tentatively scheduled for early next year, but no date has been set...."

Florida spent $69M on mental health after Parkland but didn’t mention suicide prevention
A Times/Herald review shows that though school districts outlined spending those mental health dollars to hire hundreds of counselors, therapists and other mental health personnel, only a handful of plans explicitly flagged suicide prevention programs as a central focus.
    March 27, 2019

TALLAHASSEE -- When lawmakers gave more than $69 million in mental health to school districts after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, many cast the funding as a way to help prevent future mass shootings and identify troubled students who needed help.

But there was little discussion while crafting the bill — and no mention in the final 105 pages of legislation — that specifically directed schools to consider suicide prevention efforts, the most pressing mental health challenge facing a generation and the second leading cause of death for young people under 35.

“The community of Parkland, Fla., is reeling from the news this weekend that two young people took their own lives. On Friday, 19-year-old Sydney Aiello was buried, five days after she killed herself. Aiello was a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year at the time of the mass shooting. A day later, on Saturday, another student took his life. He was a current student, a sophomore whom authorities haven't identified.

This is something we recognized was a possibility early on and tried to drive awareness [about]. ... I'm hoping now that as a community, we recognize that the threat is very real.”

Attorneys for Nikolas Cruz want to shield names of mental health experts
Parkland school shooter in court, but attorney who sparred with judge absent

    March 26, 2019

"...Scherer rescheduled the hearing on the state's order on limited disclosure and to address the defense's motion for protective order for April 5, allowing each side time to file a written response.

Cruz's attorneys said they aren't required to tell prosecutors which experts they're consulting and don't have to say which will testify until 20 days before Cruz's trial next year. They said it would be unfair if prosecutors learn the experts through jail visitor logs...."

NIKOLAS CRUZ IN COURT - Parkland school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz is back in court for a status hearing

Confessed Parkland Shooter Nicolas Cruz Must Attend Future Pre-Trial Hearings (with clip)

    April 5, 2019

"FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) — Attorneys for confessed Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School gunman Nikolas Cruz went before a judge Friday to see if she would waive his attendance at future pretrial hearings.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer said that in order to obtain the waiver she would have to question Cruz directly. She said if he “knowingly, voluntarily and intelligently” waives his appearance, she will allow it.

Cruz’s attorneys wanted him excluded because they felt his presence draws television coverage that emotionally damages survivors of the February 14th, 2018, attack that left 17 dead.

After some discussion, they decided they did not want him questioned in open court so Scherer said she would disregard the motion.

Also during the hearing, the defense argued against the released Cruz’s jailhouse visitor log by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Judge Scherer said she may decide on that Monday...."

‘I really want kids’: Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz’s love letters from jail o_O

    April 8, 2019

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — In childlike scrawl with stick-figure drawings, Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz has been writing love letters from jail to a young woman overseas. In the letters, he proposes marriage, muses about having children and says he wants to name his sons after guns. But he never mentions shooting 34 people in cold blood — killing 17 of them — at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel obtained 46 pages of Cruz’s handwritten letters from the Broward state attorney’s office. They are part of the legal case, as the state attorney seeks the death penalty against the now-20-year-old for the Feb. 14, 2018, Parkland shooting. The records did not include any letters to Cruz from the girl...."

    Apr 10, 2019

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Survivors and family members of the slain victims of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, sued the school board, sheriff's office and others for negligence Wednesday, saying the agencies initially had promised a financial settlement but secretly worked behind the scenes to prevent a deal.

More than two dozen family members and survivors filed 22 lawsuits in state court in South Florida against the School Board of Broward County; the Broward Sheriff's Office; former deputy Scott Peterson, who was a school resource officer; Andrew Medina, who was a school security monitor; and Henderson Behavioral Health Clinic, a mental health facility where suspect Nikolas Cruz was treated...."

    April 10th 2019

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — As of 11:55 a.m., families of the slain victims and survivors of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida say they initially had no plans to sue the school board or sheriff’s office, since those agencies had promised to reach a financial settlement with them.

Cruz attorneys want to question his mental counselors alone

    April 18, 2019

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Attorneys for the suspect in last year's Florida school massacre will ask a judge to let them question his former mental health counselors without prosecutors present.

Attorneys for Nikolas Cruz are scheduled Thursday to ask Judge Elizabeth Scherer for permission to question the counselors without notifying prosecutors or allowing their attendance. The counselors treated Cruz before the Feb. 14, 2018, massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead...."
