I have zero sympathy for the officer who is being charged for his behavior during the shooting. The fact that he was allowed to retire with full benefits was mind boggling.

These guys get tons of extra benefits, more pay, opportunities for overtime pay, when they provide security for football games, things that regular teachers are "expected" to show up for, without extra pay.

His job is to provide protection and security when stuff like this happens. Not to run and hide, when he is the ONLY adult who has a weapon on the school grounds. He could have easily tracked Cruz, and at least attempted an intervention.

He was there, padding his pension for his "high three years". Not to actually do his job.

"Defense lawyers for Nikolas Cruz want to boot Broward State Attorney Mike Satz off the case for refusing to even entertain waiving the death penalty — and because they say he called the Parkland school shooter “evil; worse than Ted Bundy.”

Cruz’s lawyers, in a motion filed recently, argue that Satz and his office should be disqualified from the case because they won’t consider “mitigation,” or details of Cruz’s life story that might sway prosecutors to drop the death penalty as a possible punishment for fatally shooting 17 students and staffers in February 2018.

“The State Attorney’s determination that Mr. Cruz is evil does not appear to be a reasoned decision but instead a decision based on caprice and emotion,” the Broward Public Defender’s office wrote in a motion to disqualify Satz and his entire office from the case.

No hearing date has been set for Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer to consider the request. If granted, prosecutors from another county would have to be appointed to handle the case.

Cruz has a routine court hearing on Monday, although it was unclear if Judge Scherer would entertain the request then. The State Attorney’s Office plans to issue a written response. “We will be opposing the motion, but reserve further comment for the courtroom and court documents,” according to a State Attorney’s spokeswoman...."

Under no circumstances should Nickolas [sic] be allowed to leave a supervised setting without an escort.”

This is just so sick to think that a deranged individual was/is allowed in public school. They knew and allowed him to stay.

The problem is the fact that Cruz probably was identified as "disabled", with an Individualized Education Plan, (IEP). It makes the ability to "kick him out" much more complicated.

That being said, there was much that could have been done, and probably should have been done. However, he didn't have a criminal record, or it seems like any other significant violent activity. They couldn't just ship him to another school situation without a bunch of reasons and justifications. He hadn't shot up the school yet.

Wow!!! The behavior described in that behavioral assessment is extremely disturbing and he should've been locked away in a mental institution!!!

(Please know that I don't say that lightly. My mother has bipolar disorder, so I'm extremely sensitive to those who suffer from mental illness. Locking up the mentally ill as a way to "deal with the problem" -- which was the preferred method of treatment not that very long ago -- is absolutely NOT the answer and is not something I would ever condone. However, individuals who are a danger to themselves and others absolutely need to be institutionalized until the threat no longer exists. 1000%!)

Very true. I had circumstances that even now, make me shudder. I am glad that I don't teach school any more.

I can't discuss some of my situations, but believe me, students bring guns, knives, bear spray, all kinds of things that should never be at a school. And if they have an IEP, it is wiped away, as an "incident". I had a student bring a loaded gun to school, he stated he had it for "protection". So, it was confiscated. No write up. Not even a suspension.

I worked in mental health for a long time. There is no where to "lock them up" anymore....... its not even an option. I will leave it at that.

The mother of Nikolas Marciel Cruz told the South Florida Sun Sentinel her 18-year-old son got tired of being confused with Nikolas Jacob Cruz, the 20-year-old accused of killing 17 people.

Ivonne Moran said reporters called their house after the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting thinking her son was the killer — they live in Sunrise, which neighbors Parkland where Stoneman Douglas is located. She kept her son out of his school the day after the shooting, fearing how other students and parents would react.

The final straw came when a man recoiled, pulled back his hand and exclaimed “Oh my god!” after Nikolas introduced himself. He has applied with the courts to change his name to Nikolas Rene Moran. He should have a hearing before a judge within 90 days...."

This is not the Nikolas Cruz who confessed to carrying out the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. This Nikolas Cruz was a teenager living at home in Sunrise, miles away from the school, on that day. Unfortunately, this Nikolas was burdened with the same name and the same spelling as the confessed Parkland shooter. It’s been a challenging 19 months for him and his family.

During that time, Nikolas feared the police, who showed up at his home on the day of the shooting. He dealt with strange looks from people when he told them his name and tried to avoid saying his name. His mother, Ivonne Moran, said her son, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, regressed. A hearing on the matter scheduled for Friday has been pushed back to October 25th.

The hoodies, which include bullet holes, showcase various schools where students have died in mass shootings.

Along with Stoneman Douglas, other schools include Sandy Hook, Columbine and Virginia Tech.

According to Paper, the company released an artist statement which read, "Sometimes life can be painfully ironic,"

"Like the irony of dying violently in a place you considered to be a safe, controlled environment, like school. We are reminded all the time of life's fragility, shortness, and unpredictability yet we are also reminded of its infinite potential."

People upset with the hoodies bombarded the company's Instagram page with negative comments...."

This is beyond poor taste. Especially the "Columbine" hoodie. "Columbine" immediately brings up the images of children dead, and others walking around like zombies. It was horrific.

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A judge has rejected a request by defense attorneys in the Florida high school massacre case to remove the state's prosecutors because they won't reconsider seeking the death penalty.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer ruled Thursday that she was denying the defense motion to disqualify Broward State Attorney Michael Satz from prosecuting the case. Scherer wrote that a defendant must show substantial misconduct or actual prejudice to remove a prosecutor, which defense attorneys didn't.

The motion filed earlier this month by attorneys for 21-year-old Nikolas Cruz says Satz informed them he will consider no evidence that would argue against capital punishment...."

An intoxicated man on Friday was able to ride his bicycle through the front gate of Spruce Creek High School while carrying a knife in his pocket, enter the school building and sit in a classroom with students, all before a deputy caught him, Volusia County records show.

Derek Marlowe, 51, was arrested nearly 20 minutes after entering the Port Orange school. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Department released body camera footage from arresting deputy Justin Lococo Monday. Marlowe told Lococo he was “testing the system” and the school’s security.

According to Marlowe’s arrest report, Shawn Butler, a campus advisor, was checking in faculty and students when Marlowe rode through the bus and faculty entrance at 8:37 a.m. Instead of radioing on-campus faculty, Butler called another advisor, Michele Passomante, on his cell phone to inform her of a suspicious person. Butler then watched as Marlowe entered the school through the student entrance.

Passomante was not on campus at the time. When Passomante arrived on campus, she was able to notify other faculty that Marlowe had entered the building and started to look for him.

Meanwhile, Marlowe lingered through the halls while class was in session, then entered the locked classroom of Charles Brinkerhoff when a student who went to the bathroom didn’t close the door all the way, the arrest report said.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Marlowe has served two stints in prison, one for a felony DUI charge and one for battery. He also has a number of arrests in Volusia County.

I don't think they had any choice. They have a legal obligation to provide educational services to the best of their ability. I'm sure that the school staff also realized that their ability to provide the appropriate services was limited. I'm sure they also wished he could be in a more secure institutional facility better adapted to what the situation required. But, most likely, that was not an option. There simply aren't very many long-term inpatient treatment programs anymore. The ones that do exist have very long waiting lists. Most likely, their hands were tied. And there also aren't many services outside the school system once students graduate or drop out.

I don't think we're allowed to get too deep into the discussion of this topic, but suffice to say, there is a lot of information online on the history of long-term inpatient treatment in the United States.

Parkland Safety Commission Meets Near Orlando, Discusses Mental Health

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission is holding two days of meetings outside of Orlando.

The commission will make recommendations to the legislature for more changes in the wake of the Parkland massacre.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri is the chairman of the commission.

He complained that potentially dangerous students with mental health problems are not being adequately responded to by the mental health system.

"Where you got a kid Baker Acted 35 times. It’s ridiculous," the sheriff said. "And the system isn’t working."
