On June 24, 2021, Champlain Towers South, a 12-floor condominium in Surfside, Florida, partially collapsed at approximately 1:30 a.m. EDT. The collapse happened suddenly and has resulted in mass casualties.

On June 25, NIST began deploying a team of six scientists and engineers to collect firsthand information on the collapse. Since then, NIST experts have been working with federal, state and local authorities to identify and preserve materials and information that might be helpful in understanding why the collapse occurred.

400 chunks of concrete may explain what caused a deadly building collapse in Florida

NIST says the investigation of the Champlain Towers South collapse is "one of the most complex and challenging of its type ever undertaken, with no obvious initiating event for the collapse." The agency says its investigation won't be completed until spring of 2024. A report with recommendations is expected a year later.

Besides design understrength, investigators reported signs of corrosion, misplaced reinforcement and the placement of heavier and additional plant containers on the deck than those in the original plans. These and other factors led to “ critically low margins against failure,” investigators said.

The years-long investigation into the 2021 Miami condo collapse that killed 98 people has laid the blame on faulty support columns in the tenant garage and adjoining pool deck.

Federal investigators with the National Institute of Standards and Technology said this week that tests show some of the steel-reinforced concrete columns in the doomed condo were half the strength they should have been.

They have concluded that many of the columns in the doomed Champlain Towers South building were not up to scratch even in 1980 - the year the 12-story tower was built.

2/5/25 - The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has submitted to Congress an update on its investigation into the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida. The update is included in a report submitted to Congress on NIST’s activities under the National Construction Safety Team (NCST) Act.

The report notes that the team has completed all experimental work on the physical evidence from the building’s structural elements. This includes mechanical testing of concrete cores and steel reinforcing bars, and measurements of slab, beam and column cross sections. The team also completed a study of historical wind loads on the building, as well as 3D simulations of the subsurface conditions beneath the building site.

In a video released today, investigation lead Judith Mitrani-Reiser and associate lead Glenn Bell, explain how the work completed so far is informing their understanding of what caused the collapse, and how it could make buildings across the U.S. safer.

“Our team has worked tirelessly to find the causes of this disaster and we are in the home stretch now,” said Judith Mitrani-Reiser, the NIST lead investigator.

“Our team is on schedule to complete the evaluation of failure hypothesis this fiscal year and release a public report next year,” Mitrani-Reiser said.

An hour and a half long video at:

“As we have shared in previous updates, there were many design and construction problems that weakened the building from the start,” said Mitrani-Reiser. “These deficiencies posed many potential failure initiation possibilities both in the pool deck and the tower, and each is being carefully considered so that we can narrow our focus to the most likely ones and seek to rule out others.”

Deadly Surfside condo collapse likely started from pool deck, officials find
Deadly Surfside condo collapse likely started from pool deck, officials find

Federal investigators said Tuesday that the 2021 collapse of the Surfside, Florida, condo building that killed dozens of people stemmed from a structural failure in the pool deck, not the tower itself.

The points of distress were concentrated in a small area of the pool deck and street-level parking deck, the agency said, "which has been confirmed to have begun collapsing at least seven minutes before the tower."

This was in the news and being discussed here back in 2023. I guess it wasn't "official" before now? 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, i remembered that also. It sounded like they had confirmation in the article, maybe from recreating the collapse in 3D or something.
