Homeless convicted child killer going from Broward jail to VA hospital
Veteran arrested for failing to register as a transient
Arrested last week for allegedly failing to register as a transient, a homeless convicted child killer who had been hanging out in Stranahan Park will be transferred from jail to a Miami veterans hospital for treatment, a Broward County judge ordered Tuesday.
Gary D. Kerpan, 60, was arrested Friday and charged with failing to report a residence change.
He is properly registered with the state as a transient sex offender, but Fort Lauderdale police say he failed to update the address on his official identification. It still lists his mother's home address in Lake Placid, N.Y., rather than "transient."
Doug Brawley, chief assistant public defender in charge of mental health, and prosecutor Dennis Siegel brokered a deal to have the former Marine transferred from the Broward County Main Jail to a Veterans Administration hospital in Miami.
County Court Judge John "Jay" Hurley signed off on that deal Tuesday morning.
