A prominent Florida radiation oncologist is missing after the U.S. Coast Guard located his boat off Sanibel Island this week.

Chaundre Cross, 49, was last seen Tuesday on his boat, the "Vitamin Sea" — a 33-foot Sea Ray — leaving the Naples Bay Resort & Marina, according to a Friday tweet from the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast.

"He hasn’t returned and family members are concerned," the Collier County Sheriff's Office said in a Friday statement on its Facebook news page.

Coast Guard crews from Ft. Myers Beach, Cutter Crocodile and Air Station Clearwater are currently searching the water for Cross, the USCG Southeast tweeted

Cross serves as president of the Board of the Cancer Alliance of Naples, and previously served as a member of the Board for Collier County P.L.A.N. and the American Cancer Society of Naples. He has degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and completed his residency at Harvard Medical School, according to his biography on GenisisCare.com.

"Have you seen this missing person?" the Collier County Sheriff's Office tweeted Wednesday. "Chaundre Cross, 49, was last seen on his boat — a 33-foot Sea Ray with 'Vitamin Sea' on the back — leaving Naples Bay Marina around 7:30 this morning. He hasn't returned and family members are concerned."

On Thursday, the Coast Guard tweeted that the vessel had "been located offshore between Sanibel Island and Naples, FL-but not Dr. Cross."

The agency continued, "Coast Guard crews from Ft. Myers Beach, Cutter Crocodile & Air Station Clearwater continue to search for a person in the water."

#Breaking the USCG is searching for Dr. Chaundre Cross on his 34 ft Crownline the "Vitamin Sea" & was last seen Tuesday @ Naples Bay Resort & Marina. Crews from Ft. Myers, Cutter Crocodile & Air Station Clearwater are searching. Anyone w/ info please call 727-824-7506.

Deputies say the search for the 5-foot 11-inch man began when his family became concerned when he had not returned. Cross is described to be 150 pounds with a bald head and brown eyes.
The agency says he was last seen wearing a purple shirt and black pants.

So the boat was anchored and the man was gone. IMO, he voluntarily left his boat.
I’m not sure it was found anchored- I saw that in the WinkNews article as well, but every other source says the boat was found “offshore” near Sanibel Island. I wish there was clearer info to describe where exactly the boat was found and if it was then transported to Sanibel to be docked, perhaps near where it was located originally?

Since then, no one has seen him. A Coast Guard C-130 found his boat on Thursday near Sanibel Island in the middle of the water, but Cross wasn't on it.

The Coast Guard is asking other boaters to keep an eye out for Dr. Cross, even sending a message over the radio. For those boaters, the Coast Guard wants you to know they're searching about 45 by 45 nautical miles off Naples Beach, Marco Island, and Fort Myers Beach.

BBM- So it sounds like the boat was found in the middle of the water and then taken to Sanibel. The same article said USCG is hoping to find him in the water with his life jacket on.

This was in the article from 12 august. Wife of missing doctor filed for divorce same day he vanished off his boat

Ayla Hudson is a public affairs specialist for the United States Coast Guard and shared some thoughts with WINK News.

The coast guard said that the boat will remain anchored where it was found.

“For the time being, the boat has been left anchored at its location that it was found at so local law enforcement can do whatever they need to do for their side of the investigation,” said Hudson.

I am surprised he was boating on a Tuesday since most patients are seen during the week. But with the pending divorce, maybe he took a day off. That’s assuming he knew she was going to file divorce.

He has a stellar career and education so a lot to lose by walking away. That doesn’t seem plausible to me.

Is the last sighting from the marina camera, or did he interact with staff, or fellow boaters, prior to heading out?

@kccorona it says here that the boat will stay anchored where it was found? Maybe conflicting reports?
Yeah, the WinkNews article was the only news source I found that said it was anchored “where it was found.” The rest said it was floating at sea but had no signs of foul play or disturbance. It was floating out close to Sanibel Island, which was why they docked it where they did. See my post above with the quote directly from the Coast Guard and a link to the Fox4 article.

There's a lot more information if you open up the dockets for each case. Apparently, the wife that filed for divorce the day he went missing is wife #2. The dissolution from wife #1 was initiated in 2018 and it looks like she filed twice over two years. Even MORE interesting is the case record (dockets)s show that the dissolution for marriage No 1 was reassigned to a different judge in July of 2022. SO WAS HE STILL LEGALLY MARRIED TO WIFE #1 who is NOT the same woman as Wife #2? (I might just be reading that wrong, you all take a took). The battery charges which was noted in the post from above involves a girlfriend (not either spouse) and occurred in Nov. 2018. (under dockets for this case you can open the actual complaint) He had to enter batterers intervention and surrender his firearms (he stated he had none). ShowCase (select the "case search" at the top of the screen, you do NOT have to register to search). After reading his history, my thoughts went from self harm to faking his going missing, but that's only my opinion.

A divorce generally has at lest two steps, often 3 that I'm aware of -- the marriage itself & the division of property.

The marriage may have been severed legally while the division of property goes on.

If there are children, the divorce case may be open until the youngest is emancipated.

Looks to me that Dr. Cross trained for a lucrative career. The court may be dividing his future earnings?

Not direct knowledge of this case, just of some things that may keep a divorce case going for years.

jmho ymmv lrr

Yikes! It's like peeling the layers from an onion.

  • ...the doctor’s boat has been moved in coordination with the family.
  • They have not released the new location of the boat.
  • ...nothing was found on the boat that would indicate suspicious activity...

No suspicious activity is good. Are all the life jackets, rescue or lifesaving equipment still on board?? He could have fallen overboard or been picked up by another boater. Either way, it would have been a good idea to don a life jacket.

When did his phone last ping and did the boats GPS ping too? So much electronic assistance in boating these days. Seems harder to hide.

Friends and family members have joined Coast Guard officials in seeking any sign of Cross. Their hope is that they will find him treading water, waving, or signaling.
"Our first priority is the safety and well-being of our employees and patients. We are concerned for the well-being and safety of Dr. Cross and are here to support all of our employees and to ensure the continuation of care for our patients.”

“Our Naples and Bonita Springs offices will continue operations to ensure continuous care for our patients. We have other physician coverage and support from the community. We will continue to care for our patients.”

“The well-being of the individual involved, as well as our broader teams and patients, is our number one priority. This is a private matter, and we will not be commenting further on this matter.”
Dr. Cross statement from Genesis Care

The water overnight was around 87 degrees; officials say a person can easily survive several days in those temperatures.
