SEBASTIAN, Florida – On Sunday, April 22 at about 6 p.m., a person was using a metal detector found bone fragments in a vacant lot along U.S. 1 at the north city limits of Sebastian.

The bone fragments have been determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office to be that of a human. The location is adjacent and to the north of the City of Sebastian Cemetery. The person who found the bones drove to the Sebastian Police station and reported the discovery.
Patrol officers responded to the scene and secured it immediately. Detectives and crime scene personnel arrived and examined the bone fragments and performed a cursory examination of the area. The bones and material do not appear to be fresh and have likely been there for some time. The property belongs to the City of Sebastian and is under construction for expanding the cemetery grounds. A contractor had been working the site until the discovery, removing dirt and preparing the location.

“At this time, we do not have any idea whether the bones are very old, or recent, or a manner of death,” said Chief Michelle Morris. “It will likely take some time before we have any details on what we have. It is not likely that the remains are from the cemetery based on the location of the discovery, even though it is adjacent to the cemetery.”

SEBASTIAN, Florida – The bones found Sunday along U.S. 1 near the Sebastian Cemetery have been identified as human remains, according to the medical examiner.

Indian River County Sheriff’s Office investigators are aiding Sebastian Police in the case.
“It’s clear that that body has been there for some time,” Maj. Eric Flowers, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, told Sebastian Daily.

Flowers said some of the bone fragments recovered were that of a human skull.

Sebastian police say they have no information on the identity of the human bones found.
“We’re still in the process of uncovering them. And the weather isn’t cooperating,” Commander Dan Acosta, spokesman for the Sebastian Police Department, told Sebastian Daily.
The weather on Tuesday improved with only a few showers. There is no rain in the forecast for Wednesday or Thursday.

At the vacant lot, crime scene investigators continue to sift through the sand recovering bone fragments and other evidence in the case.

Sebastian Police Commander Dan Acosta said the bones were found by a man using a metal detector. He had been looking for valuables, not body parts.

Now police are spending days looking for more.

“They have to be slow and methodical and they pick up every inch of sand,” Acosta said.
Right now, investigators don’t know how long the bones have been there. However, Acosta said before the city owned the property in 2011, it was someone’s private property.

“It was full of trees,” Acosta said. “It goes off into the distance and it's up high, so people who drive by probably don’t even notice.”

Even though the bones were found close to the cemetery, Acosta said they are not part of the cemetery.

SEBASTIAN — Human bones uncovered in a vacant lot just north of the Sebastian Cemetery Sunday remain under investigation by the medical examiner's office as it works to determine the identity of the person.

Once the medical examiner completes the investigation, the bones could be sent to an anthropologist for further analysis, said Dan Acosta, spokesman for the Sebastian Police Department.

The bones were found alongside "other items of concern," according to police, though they would not elaborate on the nature of the items.

Investigators determined the bones were not fresh, and said they could be connected to an older homicide case.

Google pic of a corner lot next to the cemetery in Nov. 2016, around the time Rosselys went missing. My mind went straight to her since this is not far from Jupiter. I guess we wait to see how old they think the bones are.

Sebastian Bones Found Near Cemetery Buried For Decades - Sebastian Daily
SEBASTIAN, Florida – A medical examiner has released details about the bones found near the Sebastian Cemetery last month.

Police recovered hundreds of bone fragments in a vacant lot off U.S. Highway 1 in Sebastian.

Authorities say they belong to a man buried in the lot for many years.

According to Dr. Roger Mittleman, chief medical examiner, the bones were dry and brittle. Some of them crushed, probably from the heavy machinery used by workers to clear the land for a nearby expansion of the Sebastian Cemetery.

Dr. Mittleman suggested the human remains were that of a man, “more on the older side than the younger side,” and possibly had been there for decades.

Medical examiner releases details about bones found near Sebastian Cemetery in April
After excavating the lot for days after the initial discovery, investigators uncovered hundreds of pieces of bone, which were turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office in Fort Pierce.

"We’re talking a lot," Mittleman said. "Some are more intact portions of long bones and bits of skull. Half a mandible. Hundreds of little tiny pieces. There’s no coffin or anything of that nature, just a skeleton that was lying there fragmented."

The remains have been turned over to anthropologists at the University of Florida.
"I didn’t see any cause of death; there were no bullets or anything of that nature," Mittleman said.

A Coca-Cola bottle made before 1990, pieces of a small pipe and portions of what appeared to be a ceramic item were discovered with the remains, Mittleman said.
UF anthropologists could turn up more details on the person's cause of death, but results aren't expected soon.

"It’s going to take months and months before they complete their examination," Mittleman said.
If examiners can retrieve any DNA from the remains, police requested it be submitted to the University of North Texas' Center for Human Identification, Mittleman said.

The DNA database could match the bones to possible family members whose samples have been entered through the criminal justice system.

Found wrapped in a tarp sounds like homicide to me. So which was it, a Coca-Cola bottle or Pepsi bottle? I wonder if they were able to obtain any DNA from the bones, particularly if there were teeth.
