Two weeks ago Janaina Reis, 17, preened for a camera in a local beauty contest, a confident hand on her hip, flaunting a two-piece outfit in the green and gold of her native Brazil.

On Sunday the Pompano Beach teenager's parents were planning a funeral. Her new boyfriend sat behind bars, charged with premeditated murder after detectives say he fired at Reis' head in broad daylight as she sat at a picnic table.

"He offered no explanation," Coleman-Wright said Sunday. "He walked up to her, grabbed the gun from his waistband and pulled the trigger."

This is SO SAD. God bless her soul.

What we need, are fathers of young girls to take a good look at boys they are dating.

I don't think ANYONE here has a dad who would have allowed that man to pass the "sniff test". He looks schizophrenic.

When I was 17 I thought my dad was annoying, in that he looked hard at boys who came to the house. Maybe this poor girl could have used that kind of supervision, and she'd be alive today.

Two years before Juan Rafael Arrieta-Rolón confessed to putting a gun to his 17-year-old girlfriend's head and killing her, he racked up a record for violence in his native Puerto Rico.

According to a court official and online records, the 22-year-old was arrested twice in 2003 for domestic violence.

Online court records in the city of Caguas show the first case as ''resolved'' but it's unclear how. Arrieta-Rolón was found guilty in the second case and sentenced, though the terms of the sentence were unclear.

Arrieta-Rolón, who went by the nickname ''Boricua,'' which denotes someone of Puerto Rican heritage, moved to Broward six months ago, investigators said.
