How in the world do you get out of handcuffs and shackles? Unless they were on way too loose?

Today, Resiles showed up in court in shackles for a hearingto determine whether the death penalty applied to his case. He'd been sittingcalmly in Judge Raag Singhal's jury box next to a crowd of other inmateswaiting to have their cases heard. Out of the blue, reports say, Resiles burstout of his shackles, shot up out of his seat, and ran from the room.
"No one can figure how he got the leg shackles and thehandcuffs off — whether he had a key or was adept at slipping them off,"attorney Jim Lewis, who witnessed the event, told the Sun Sentinel.
Witnesses say Resiles then plowed through two guarded doorswith the skill of an NFL running back. One deputy apparently grabbed Resiles'collar, but the inmate sprung free. He also slammed a door into a pregnantassistant state attorney. Security footage showed an unidentified man forcinghis way into a silver 2008 BMW with the plate number 859ICT.[…]

Prosecutor Brian Cavanagh was also in the courtroom as Resiles sat at the end of the jury box, closest to the swinging door.
"It happened in the blink of an eye," Cavanaghsaid. "This guy was quick. He must have been waiting for anopportunity."
Cavanagh said he was about 25 feet from the swinging door when "suddenly I see a blur— a black-and-white striped blur that was his jail uniform. And I saw a deputy trying to grab him. I figured it was a prisoner, but I didn't realize it was a murder defendant."
Cavanagh said he saw one deputy try to tackle Resiles.
"By the time I got out of the courtroom, the guy was already down the back steps and a deputy was walking back, saying, 'He got away,'"Cavanagh said.
Whether the escape was an inside job, the prosecutor said,"You've got to wonder. Who knows?"

Authorities: Murder suspect escapee still on lam, might be armed
JULY 16, 2016 | FORT LAUDERDALE
Authorities said a 21-year-old murder suspect who escaped from a Broward County courtroom remained on the lam Saturday after shedding his shackles, eluding unarmed bailiffs and racing down a four-story staircase to freedom.
Dayonte Omar Resiles pulled off the vanishing act Friday in a courtroom filled with inmates, lawyers, visitors and two unarmed, civilian bailiffs. He dropped his black-and-white striped prison jumpsuit and a set of handcuffs on a hallway floor before he disappeared.
Officials on Saturday said detectives have received information, following Resiles' escape, that he is armed.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel called the escape his "worst fear" as deputies and Fort Lauderdale police launched a countywide manhunt. They searched a housing complex in the city, aboard boats docked in nearby canals and as far east as the Intracoastal Waterway.

Israel said Resiles was "appropriately shackled as far as wearing a waist shackle. Whether or not it was secure, we'll find out as we investigate."

Broward Sheriff Says Murder Suspect's Escape Was "Preplanned"
July 16, 2016
After two days, the search continues in Fort Lauderdale for a murder suspect who escaped police custody at the Broward County Courthouse Friday.
In a statement Saturday, Broward Sheriff's Office says that 21-year-old Dayonte Resiles is armed and he did not act alone in his escape.
"This escape was preplanned, we know that was Dayonte Resiles had accomplices," said Broward Sheriff Scott Israel.
We now know Resiles had some help in his courtroom vanishing act.

If you think you've seen Resiles call 911 immediately. Broward Crime Stoppers is now offering a $20,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest following a $10,000 contribution.

Four arrested, but escaped murder suspect still at large; twins in courtroom signaled getaway car was ready, investigators say
JULY 17, 2016 5:56 PM
Four people have been arrested and charged with helping a murder suspect pull off a daring escape from the Broward County courthouse Friday morning in a well-planned operation that included a handcuff key, a fake police uniform and a set of teenage twins acting as accomplices, authorities said.

But Dayonte Resiles, the 21-year-old accused of stabbing a Davie woman to death in 2014, remained on the loose Sunday.

"The fact that Resiles remains at large tells me there are more people aiding and abetting him in his escape," a visibly frustrated Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said during a news conference. He said that the manhunt for the suspected killer was being hampered by "obstructionalists" in the community who have failed to cooperate with detectives.

In custody are Laquay Stern, 18, of Palm Bay; Winston Russell, 22, of Sunrise; and 17-year-old twins Kretron and TreVon Barnes, of West Palm Beach.

Stern was Resiles' girlfriend, detectives said.

According to what Stern told detectives, Resiles' escape was plotted over several days in a series of phone calls and face-to-face visitations between the inmate and her and Russell, described as a friend.

Stern told detectives she, Russell and the Barnes twins drove to the courthouse Friday morning in her silver BMW with two bags, one containing a change of clothing for Resiles and the other the police uniform, according to an arrest affidavit.

While Russell and Stern waited outside in the car under a nearby bridge, the twins entered courtroom 4810 where Resiles sat in the box.

Then, "once Resiles had leaned forward and shifted out of his cuffs, one of the twins coughed into a cell phone that had an open line to Stern and Russell in the vehicle to alert them Resiles was on his way to the vehicle," Israel said.

The cough was the signal for Russell and Stern "to get into position on the north side of the building," Israel said.

Dang, I hope they find this guy ASAP. But how did he get a handcuff key? And aren't all jail communications/phone calls/visits monitored?

ETA: and does a handcuff key fit the shackles too?

Security tightened after Broward escape; murder suspect remains on the run
JULY 19, 2016 12:14 AM
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel on Monday announced stronger procedures for how maximum-security jail prisoners are guarded, three days after a murder suspect carried out an astonishing Houdini-like escape from his leg shackles, handcuffs and a fourth-floor courtroom.
Dayonte Resiles, 21, remained on the lam more than 72 hours after making his daring getaway Friday morning from the Broward County courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Four alleged accomplices were arrested over the weekend.
[…]
Laquay Stern, 18, of Palm Bay, and Winston Russell, 22, of Sunrise, were denied bond on felony charges of aiding the escape, Broward Circuit Judge Stephen Zaccor ordered at their first-appearance hearings. They are entitled to follow-up hearings within five days, Zaccor said.
In juvenile court, state prosecutors said they intend to charge identical 17-year-old twins Tre'Von and Kretron Barnes of West Palm Beach — the alleged courtroom signalers — as adults. Their next court hearing was set for Aug. 5.
[…]
Stern was Resiles' girlfriend, according to court documents. She went by Quay and was studying to be a nurse at Bethune Cookman University, a historically black college in Daytona Beach, according to her Facebook page. She has no criminal record or prior arrests in Florida.
[…]
Russell had a recent jail stay that overlapped with Resiles'. Russell was locked up in Broward County from Oct. 13 to June 11 for violating probation on burglary and strong-arm robbery charges, records show.

Jail inmate becomes fifth person charged with helping murder suspect escape from Broward courthouse
JULY 20, 2016 3:19 PM
As Deyonte Resiles prepared to make his now-infamous daring dash from a Broward courtroom on Friday, investigators say a fellow inmate blocked the view as Resiles worked to slip out of his bindings.
Walter Hart III, a suspect in an unrelated killing, faces additional charges of aiding in the escape and accessory after the fact. He becomes the fifth person accused in helping Resiles carry out his escape plan.
Broward Sheriff's Office investigators say Hart's actions were recorded in surveillance video from a holding area leading to the courtroom that Resiles, 21, fled. He remains on the loose for the sixth day.

CBS/AP July 21, 2016, 5:21 AM
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A murder suspect who authorities say escaped from a South Florida courthouse with the help of five other people has been apprehended in a nearby county.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the search for 21-year-old Dayonte Resiles ended with his capture shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday in Palm Beach County.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel told reporters early Thursday that Resiles surrendered at a Days Inn in West Palm Beach. Resiles, who was alone, obeyed orders from a SWAT team to come out of a room, Israel said. He lay on the ground and allowed himself to be handcuffed.
