The bodybuilder ex-husband of 39-year-old Katie Baunach has been charged with her murder after her disappearance on September 29, 2022.

Katie was last seen when she dropped off her two children with a friend and told them that she was going to visit her ex-husband’s home that evening to pick up personal belongings.

When Katie did not return the following day, law enforcement was alerted.

Upon law enforcement’s arrival at the ex-husband’s property, Katie’s car was seen in the driveway and, when law enforcement left and returned a short time later, the car was moved to the street.

The ex-husband initially refused to let law enforcement onto his property. Once a warrant was issued and the ex-husband was detained, law enforcement found a fragment of a human mandible with an intact tooth in a fresh burn pile, and discovered a blue fifty-gallon barrel near the burn pile with a foul odor and an additional human bone fragments.

Law enforcement was able to identify the human remains as 39-year-old Katie Baunach.

Law enforcement found a large quantity of steroids, several guns, and evidence of blood staining on the property.

The ex-husband denied killing his ex-wife, claiming he went to sleep, and, by the time he woke up in the morning, she had gone. He claimed he then moved her car to the street, and when asked about the blood found inside his home, he stated that he did not believe law enforcement.

The ex-husband has been charged with first-degree pre-meditated murder, destroying evidence, using technology communication to commit a felony, cremating a dead body 48 hours after death, and failing to report a death. If convicted, he faces life in prison or the death penalty.

Officials treated Ian Baunach's car in the garage by applying luminal — a chemical that reacts to blood by glowing blood — and found that the interior of the truck "glowed blue" after treatment, court documents said.

Authorities also found "signs of a physical struggle" in a hallway between the garage and foyer to the home, noticing wall damage and a broken wall mounted mirror inside an office.

When treated with luminal, three different walls of the home, including the hallway, glowed blue, the filing said.
Authorities also found a safe with Katie Baunach's wedding band and engagement ring inside. Officers said that they learned she had been wearing the wedding band and engagement ring when she left her friend's house Sept. 29.
His preliminary hearing will be held Oct 20 or Oct. 21 in Fort Myers.

This article has new information from Katie’s cousin.

[Katie’s cousin] said Katie told her that Baunach, who attended Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, “was violent their entire relationship—while they were dating, during their engagement, everything,” adding that Baunach “often quoted scripture” during outbursts. She also said she once personally witnessed Baunach, who met Katie on the dating site Christian Mingle, throw a sippy cup “so hard it broke a window” during a get-together at her aunt’s house while the two were dating.
“[Katie] had just gotten out, she was living her life, she had a great job, she was going to get her nurse practitioner [certification],” Moore said. “She had the kids in a good school, she had her own place, and now it’s all gone.”

So he was a body builder. What do you want to bet that he's going to say the "steroids made me do it" line of defense.......
Likely, if it goes to trial. :( Personally hoping it gets resolved with a plea deal, imo.

This article had a bit of new-to-me information.

On Sept. 30, the day after the Hurricane Ian hit, [the victim’s cousin] said [Katie] went inland to stay with a friend.

While she was there, her family said her ex-husband reached out to her. He asked [Katie] to come over to his house by herself to get the kids’ clothes. The next day, [the victim’s cousin] said she wouldn’t answer her phone.

”My aunt and my cousin and her friend started calling the sheriff’s department to do a welfare check,” [the victim’s cousin] said. “Just calling, calling calling.”

Ian Christopher Baunach was indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder, abuse of a dead body, and tampering with evidence charges in Hendry County.

But a three-month investigation by USA TODAY Network-Florida into Katie's death found a series of failures to protect her by every layer of state and local law enforcement.

In November 2021, Ian allegedly grabbed Katie during a fight and tried to strangle her. She called police. The office of 20th District State Attorney Amira Fox charged Ian with a felony. But Katie forgave him after he told her he had found God – and prosecutors dropped the charges, despite the case’s lead prosecutor writing in case notes that she would have continued without victim testimony in “90 percent” of similar cases.

Less than three months later, Ian allegedly kicked Katie in the back and threatened to kill her. Katie reported the alleged attack to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office. But prosecutors did not file charges, despite deputies writing in their reports that they had sent the case to Fox’s office and were requesting an arrest warrant.

Six weeks before her death, a Lee County judge denied Katie's request for a restraining order and told her to make peace with Ian, citing concern for the couple's children.

Sorry about that. I didn't realize it was behind a paywall - and copyright rules don't allow for quoting from the paywalled article. BUT - here's another source:

Deputies found Baunach on Sep. 30, trying to clean up the crime scene and get rid of Katie’s remains. That day they arrested him for federal fire arm and drug related charges.

“He’s a bully. He was mean to people he thought he could overpower Katie was small. And he thought he had her under his thumb. And he was mean to those kids,” Katie’s cousin, Annie Moore, said.

The Hendry County bodybuilder accused of the premeditated murder of his wife and then burning her corpse days after Hurricane Ian waived his right to appear in court Wednesday.

This comes days after prosecutors said they'd seek the death penalty in this case.

The suspect, in this case, is 43-year-old Ian Baunach, accused of killing Katie Baunach. His attorney told the court that he was still in federal custody and waived his right to appear and his right to a speedy trial.

Ian Baunach is set for his next court appearance on May 10th.

Ian Baunach

This case is closed and has Nolle Prosequi entry meaning the case was abandoned. Epic fail on the part of the State Attorney's office. JMO

Was this for something that happened prior to the incident where he killed her? If so, they probably dismissed the charges since they no longer have a witness. (Sad) but thankfully they still have him for the murder and other charges. MOO
