A 12-year-old Sarasota girl, is still missing this morning, her mother tells The Herald.
Investigators say Mayra was last seen getting off a school bus in front of Booker Middle School Tuesday morning, but she did not return home that evening.

Her mother, Elva, speaking in Spanish, said she is very worried.

"There is nothing," Elva Sandoval said in a low, shaky voice. "They say they are still investigating."

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office deputies also said Mayra may have been spotted about 8 p.m. Tuesday near University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road. They reported she may have been walking with a man between the ages of 18 and 25.

Elva Sandoval said a neighbor told her she saw Mayra in a car with a 20- to 30-year-old woman outside their home after school Tuesday. Sandoval also said some of Mayra's clothes were missing.

"She's a very nice girl, very well behaved," Sandoval said. "She would never do this. ... This is very strange. She would never just leave."

Mayra is about 5-foot-1-inch-tall and was last seen wearing a light blue or beige fleece sweatshirt with the word "Mickey" on it. She also had on blue jeans, white sneakers and a light-blue backpack.

Missing 12-year-old's family asks public for help

SARASOTA COUNTY -- The family of a missing 12-year-old is asking the public for help finding her, especially from friends of the girl who might know her whereabouts.

Mayra Erisuris Sandoval, of the 3800 block of Pelau Circle, has been missing since Tuesday morning.

Her father, Jesus Erisuris, dropped her off at the bus stop at 7 a.m. She was seen talking with friends shortly before classes started at Booker Middle School, he said.

The friends told Sandoval's family she left the Booker Middle School campus before school started and they have no idea where she went.

Sandoval had taken two backpacks to school that morning, and during the day she came back home, taking clothes and leaving her book bag in her room, family members said.

Her father said there was no sign before she left that she was unhappy or thinking about running away.

Jesus Erisuris talked with her friends, and suspects they know where she went.

Authorities are still trying to answer basic questions about the case.

"We don't know if we have a runaway or a girl that's been abducted," sheriff's spokesman Lt. Chuck Lesaltato said Thursday. "She's never done this before and it's going on two nights that she's been missing. That's why we are asking the public for help."

Lesaltato said detectives could not confirm a tip that Sandoval was seen walking with a Hispanic man near University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road Tuesday night.

Sandoval is 5 feet tall, weighs 130 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. The seventh-grader was last seen wearing a light blue or beige fleece sweatshirt with "MICKEY" written on the front, blue jeans, white sneakers and a light blue backpack.

Missing girl spotted by camera

SARASOTA -- The Sarasota Sheriff’s Office released images today of what appears to be a missing 12-year-old Sarasota girl at a local gas station.

Mayra Sandoval has been missing since Tuesday morning when she was last seen getting off a school bus in front of Booker Middle School.

These new photos taken by a surveillance camera show the girl getting out of a dark SUV at the Shell station on the corner of Bee Ridge and Cattleman roads. The pictures were taken Wednesday at about 3:45 p.m.

Sandoval’s parents have seen the pictures and believe this could be their daughter. The images show the girl getting out of the SUV, then going into the station, making a cell phone call and walking toward the bathroom in the back of the store.

As she leaves the station, she is out of the camera’s view. Deputies don’t know whether the SUV picked her up again or whether she left on foot.

Police are asking anyone who was at the gas station at the same time, or anyone with other information about the missing girl, to call (941) 366-TIPS.

A news conference about the case is scheduled for this afternoon.

Surveillance video from a local gas station appears to show a missing 12-year-old girl talking on her cell phone before heading to use the restroom.

Sheriff's detectives say they're not sure the video clip taken Wednesday night is really Mayra Erisuris Sandoval, who has been missing since Tuesday. But detectives say family members of the Booker Middle School seventh-grader are "reasonably confident" that it's her on the video.

Mayra's parents recognized the clothing the girl is wearing in the video, but said she does not have a cell phone.

Taken at the Radiant Food Store on Bee Ridge Road, the video shows her stepping out of a dark-colored sport utility vehicle. Detectives are trying to identify the vehicle.

And family members have said they believe some of her friends may know where she is, but have so far refused to tell.

How do you impress on this girl's friends to talk to the police? It seems fairly clear, that IF this is her, her friends know more than they are telling.

Children can be so short-sighted, but their parents must understand the importance of helping find this girl.

Prayers that somehow someone can get through to the friends, and she can be found safe.

If it was her cell phone that she was talking on can't LE get her cell records and see who she called? It seems like they should be able to do that. LE should talk to the parents of this girl's friends and ask the parents to talk to their kids about telling LE what they know. If she is making cell calls and it wasn't to her parents then you can bet it is to her friends. Her parents must be crazy with worry.

Sarasota County sheriff's officials said Mayra Erisuris Sandoval, a Booker Middle School student, has been missing under suspicious circumstances since Tuesday.
The girl remained missing Saturday, according to sheriff's investigators.
Mayra's mother, Elva Sandoval, told The Herald in Spanish that the girl had not called home.

The above article says that her parents recognized the clothes in the video but that she doesn't have a cell phone so either she does and they just didn't know it (doubtful she's 12) or she was using someone else's phone, maybe the SUV driver.
I don't necessarily think whoever she called knows where she is, if she doesn't want to be found she may not tell friends where she went but is just calling to let them know she's ok. A lot of times with runaways other kids do know and only come forward if they think they are in danger so if her friends know she's alright they may not talk.

A 12-year-old Sarasota girl missing for a week has called her parents and told them that she is safe and in Mexico, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said today.

Investigators subsequently said they do not believe Mayra Sandoval, who traveled to Mexico with a male acquaintance, was kidnapped.

The call to her parents was made on Monday.

Mayra, a student at Booker Middle School, was reported missing Jan. 10, after she did not return home from school.

Last week, there was a report that a security video camera at a Sarasota gas station had captured an image of Mayra, but the sheriff's office said today that it was not her in the video, according to a news release.

Detectives are working on the case with the FBI and immigration authorities, and are considering filing charges against the man with Mayra, who was described as being in his early 20s.

Anyone with information about Mayra can call Detective Ralph Ortiz at (941) 316-1201 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 941-366-TIPS (8477).

I certainly hope that they press charges as this girl is only 12 yrs old. Even if she went because she wanted to she is still only 12 yrs old. It's against the law for a 20 yr old to have anything to do with a 12 yr old. You can bet the 20 yr old didn't want her to go with him so that they could hold hands.

It's also my understanding that domestic violence is alright too. No one thinks a thing of it if the husband knocks the heck out of his wife. Guess they figure he is just keeping her in line.

Isn't that sickening!! This guy is over 18 and he has taken her across state lines or someone has anyway. That is against the law. I still think that they can charge him with rape because of her age regardless of where they ended up. Hope so anyway.
