[h=1]Retha Lee Hiers[/h]Some agencies give her name as Retha Ingram-Hiers.
[h=3]Details of Disappearance[/h] Hiers was last seen in the morning hours of December 19, 1982, driving away from her residence at the Breakers Apartments in the vicinity of the 12900 block of Campbell Lane in Largo, Florida. She was on her way to buy laundry detergent at the time. She left home without taking any clothing and personal belongings.

A few days after her disappearance, her husband got a letter from Hiers saying she had left him to be with Cleveland Hill Jr. and she wanted her children to stay with their father. She has never been heard from again.

Her white two-door 1976 Ford Elite was found in March 1983, four months after her disappearance, in the vicinity of the 2900 block of Gulf To Bay Boulevard in Clearwater, Florida.

Hiers had lived with her husband for 25 years prior to her disappearance and they had six children, but they didn't marry until shortly before her disappearance. Months before she vanished, her then-boyfriend found out about her affair with Hill, a married asphalt contractor and a friend of the family.

Hiers attempted suicide after her boyfriend found out about the relationship. She survived and her boyfriend agreed to marry her, and she claimed she had ended her relationship with Hill.

Her husband approached Hill after his wife disappeared and asked where Hiers was, and Hill said she had left with a Caucasian man and he had no idea where she was. Her husband sought, and was granted, a divorce on the grounds of adultery.

A photo of Hill is posted with this case summary. Donyelle Johnson and Margaret Dash also disappeared while dating him and have never been found.

Hill served a prison sentence for two accounts of assault after he shot his wife and mother-in-law in 1968, and in 1992 he was convicted of drug trafficking. He was released from prison in 2008 and now lives in Virginia. He has never been charged in connection with any of the missing women's cases and he maintains his innocence.

The missing women did not know each other and authorities have found no connection between them other than their association with Hill. Foul play is suspected in all three cases, which remain unsolved.

Retha Hiers Vanished In 1982, Tied To Disappearances Of 2 Other Women

All three women remain missing persons and the only thing that any of their cases have in common is that they were in romantic relationships with Hill. Authorities determined that the three women didn’t know each other. Police haven’t named Cleveland Hill Jr. as a suspect and he denies that he’s responsible for their disappearances.

LARGO, Fla. — In 1982, Retha Hiers, a wife and mother of six, went out to buy laundry detergent and never returned to her Largo home. Now, nearly 40 years later, her daughter remembers it like it was yesterday.

“None of it adds up. It is a mystery. I can remember the day at the age of 14 when she disappeared...I can remember her standing at the door waving goodbye that was my last time seeing her,” said Dana Hiers.

The sheriff’s office confirmed it was “conducting an excavation” while investigating a tip about three cold cases. The cases involve Retha Hiers, who disappeared in 1982, Donyelle Johnson, who disappeared in 1989, and Margaret Dash, who disappeared in 1974.

The suspect in the case is Cleveland Hill who is dead. Hill was from Largo.

Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies are excavating a site in Largo in search of the remains of a woman who went missing in the 1980s, spokesperson Sgt. Amanda Sinni said.

Retha Hiers went missing in 1982. Authorities believe she may have been killed by the same man who was a suspect in the disappearance of two other women — Margaret Dash, who went missing in 1974, and Donyelle Johnson, who disappeared in 1989.

The suspect in all three cases is a man named Cleveland Hill, who is now dead. Hill was an asphalt contractor who had previously worked as a minister. He served 19 years in prison on federal drug charges and was released in 2008. He denied any involvement with the three missing women, sheriff’s officials said.

Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said Hill remained a suspect throughout the investigation, but authorities were never able to gather enough evidence for Hill to face charges. Even on his death bed, Hill refused to answer questions from investigators, Gualtieri said.

The excavation is taking place at 1201 Gooden Crossing in Largo. Detectives are expected to be on site Wednesday and Thursday.
