Florida investigators say that 21-year-old Florida State sophomore Nicole Nachtman shot her stepfather Robert Dienes dead in Tampa last Thursday and then lay in wait for her mom to come home. When Naval Reserve captain Myriam Dienes arrived, Nicole changed her mind and tried to flee out of a window but her mom spotted her, so she shot her dead too.

Nicole fled back to university and asked people to cover for her yet was unable to stop herself talking about what she'd done, and the 'screaming voices' she says made her do it, Hillsborough Sheriff's officials said in an affidavit released Monday. She has refused to speak to officers directly. A friend of Nachtman's said she was tormented and harassed at university.

Nicole has been charged with two counts of first degree murder. She is being held in the Orient Road Jail without bail.

According to the news report, Nachtman apparently killed her stepfather at least one day prior to killing her mother.

Nicole Nachtman would later tell people she had second thoughts when Myriam Dienes finally arrived after 9 p.m. Thursday, detectives said.
In the house, they later pried open a locked bedroom door to find the decaying body of Robert Dienes. He had been shot once in the neck.
She waited overnight for her mother, Myriam Dienes to return home, the report said.

Hmmm.....I live in Tampa and hadn't heard a word about this. That's strange.

Anyway......how tragic. She had hours to change her mind, and still essentially hunted and killed her own mother in her own house.....after killing stepdad......talk about premeditated!

    Wow.

I find the one remark by a "friend" that this young woman was harassed at school, odd. Could she be frankly mentally ill, hearing voices? Either she is, or She is setting that up for her defense. I wonder if there is any outside proof of her being harassed, emails, letters, witnesses? It could be all in her head.

It's so odd what gets covered vs not covered. I am a news junkie, and we aren't hearing a word about this...

This whole thing is so tragic..

Last week the state was handed a huge setback when a Hillsborough Judge ruled the two murders would be two separate trials. And the murder of Nachtman's mother could not be mentioned or brought up during the stepdad’s trial.

The State prosecutor argued you can't separate the two, especially, he says, when it comes to Nachtman’s confession to her brother.

Nachtman's defense attorney argued some of the evidence doesn't apply to both cases and combining both murders will confuse the jury.

Teh judge ruled in favor of the prosecution and will now combine both murders into one trial. The trial was set to start next week, but it looks like the judge will give each side a little more time to prepare.

No new trial date has been set yet.

Judge changes mind; Nicole Nachtman to face one trial for parents' murders

I wonder if the brother is trying to help her since Nicole is his only living immediate family.

Defense: Nachtman abused by mom, stepdad (with clip)

    JAN 09 2019

"TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Defendant Nicole Nachtman was smiling and giddy during a jailhouse visit with her older brother, days after being accused of murdering her parents.

Now, her attorneys have finally presented a defense for their client's alleged actions. They say behind the smiles and childlike behavior was a tortured and tormented young woman.

They say Nachtman suffered years of abuse and neglect at the hands of her mother and stepdad.

Her defense in brought in a mental health expert, Dr. Kathleen Heide, Wednesday to explain it to the judge.

"At times, it looked like she was suppressing anger towards her mother," said Dr. Heide.

Nachtman's attorneys say she suffered from battered child syndrome and that's what drove her to murder.

Dr. Heide said when she first met Nachtman in jail. she says the former FSU student suffered from drastic mood swings and did not appear to understand the seriousness of the alleged crime...."

Controversial psychologist to interview woman accused of killing mom, stepdad (with clip)

    FEB 15 2019

"TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - Dr. Emily Lazarou, a forensic psychologist, was nearly booted from testifying in the John Jonchuck case...
Defendant Nicole Nachtman is accused of killing her mom and stepdad. Nachtman claims she suffered from battered child syndrome, which drove her to kill.

A judge will allow the jury to hear about it, but first, the prosecution wants Dr. Lazarou to question Nachtman.

Dana Herce, her public defender is not happy about it.

"I'm certainly going to protect Ms. Nachtman from the things I have read Ms. Lazarou [did] during other interviews," said Herce....

Hillsborough Judge Christopher Sabella ruled Dr. Lazarou will interview Nachtman but her questions will be limited to the abuse the defendant claims she suffered at the hands of her mother."
