Spring 2014 has been a quiet tornado season thus far, but that's about to change this weekend, if the predicted forecasts that meteorologists are looking at hold true. Weather experts say conditions are lining up for a series of powerful tornadoes to hit an area ranging between Tennessee and Texas from Saturday through Monday. The National Weather Service predicts a "significant multi-day severe event" in the South plains on Sunday, moving into the Mississippi Valley on Monday.

We are in an area with a Torcon of 4. Don't know if we will get a tornado near us, however we are bound to get hail since I planted a few tomato and pepper plants outside.

    Stay alert my friends!

Hi Show Me. Just curious what is a Torcon?

I've always said that tornadoes are the scariest weather forces! I feel so bad when I see the total devastation they can cause.

I've lived all my life living right on top of the San Andreas fault in the S. F. Bay Area, but still feel more afraid for people in tornado areas.

Hope everyone will be safer with this warning to get more prepared.

Tornado Condition Index. I like the index. I think people take severe weather more seriously with the TorCon index. Here is a link and more info for you below. At least with a tornado you can prepare an earthquake is like NOW.

    http://www.weather.com/news/weather-tornado/tornado-torcon-index

    TOR:CON Value Descriptions

8+ Very high probability of a tornado
    6 - High probability of a tornado
4 - Moderate chance of a tornado nearby, but hail and/or high wind gusts possible
2 - Low chance of a tornado, but hail and/or high wind gusts possible
    0 - Near-zero chance of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm

The TOR:CON index ranges from 0 to 10. Multiply the value by 10 to get your percentage chance of a tornado within 50 miles of a location. For example, a TOR:CON index of 6 means there's a 60% chance of a tornado within 50 miles of any location in the indicated area.

Our Tor con increased to 5 this morning for Sunday. On the other hand southwest Arkansas, northwest Louisiana and notheast Texas has a Tor con index of 7 for Sunday!

The Weather Channel has this forecast for today, Saturday. (Excellent website for weather info.) Really bad news for Saturday is the threat will be late evening and night. Can't tell you how many times over the years hubby and I stayed up late with a forecast like this.
    http://www.weather.com/news/weather-tornado/tornado-torcon-index

    Saturday, April 26

Scattered severe thunderstorms and tornadoes likely in the evening and overnight in south-central and southeast SD, central and east NE, west IA, northwest MO, central and east KS, OK (excluding panhandle and southeast), central TX from near Childress to Del Rio eastward to San Antonio and Dallas. TOR:CON - 4 central and east NE, west OK, northwest TX; 3 rest of area

The Tor:Con isn't a real meteorological value. It was made up by the Weather Channel. The STP, however, is a true meteorological value. #jamesspann #trueweatherman

Tornadoes kill at least 18 as storms pummel Plains, Midwest, and South

At least 18 people were killed Sunday by three separate tornadoes spawned by a powerful storm system that moved through the central and southern United States.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management confirmed early Monday that at least sixteen people died in Little Rock, Ark., when a twister carved an 80-mile path of destruction through suburbs north of the state capital.

    .................... snip ......................
    ..................................................

To the southeast, northern Louisiana and Mississippi were bracing for severe storms along with the possibility of flash flooding. The predictions prompted Barksdale Air Force Base near Bossier City, La., to cancel its air show on Sunday. The National Weather Service said northern Alabama could see rain and flash flooding, while central and northern Georgia could see storms and heavy rain.

Sunday was the third anniversary of a 122-tornado day, which struck parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia and killed 316 people.

Meanwhile, runners in Oklahoma City took shelter early Sunday as hail and high winds delayed the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon by 105 minutes to let a severe thunderstorm pass through.
