France’s coastguard launched a search operation for the chief executive of the surfwear brand Quiksilver on Tuesday after his sailing boat was found washed up on a beach on France’s Atlantic coast.

Pierre Agnes, 54, set sail early on Tuesday morning before sending a message to port authorities indicating that he was delaying his return because of thick fog. His boat was found near Hossegor, a famed surfing spot north of Biarritz.

Rescue services were unable to say if the Frenchman had been alone.

Why is it every time I read a case similar to this my first thought is "He decided to walk (swim) away and start a new life somewhere. Like in a tropical paradise."
It almost never ends up being the situation but I am always hopeful!

French authorities on Wednesday called off a two-day search and rescue operation.

Pierre Agnes, 54, had gone out on a solo fishing trip, as he often did. He went out in his 36-foot boat, the Mascaret III, about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. He later contacted the local port authorities to say he was delaying his return because of heavy fog. His overturned vessel was found on the beach less than three hours later.

Maritime authorities had struggled with waves of up to 8 feet and poor visibility Tuesday. They called off the search on Wednesday afternoon after canvassing the area with two boats, a jet ski and three helicopters, saying there was little chance of Agnes being found alive.
