I think the questions about how this guy gets the velvet glove treatment are valid when I think of Dylan Roof or the people who wanted to attack the gov of MI. All those folks are of the “god and guns” mindset too.

This isn't much different from a serial or spree killer who acts out of twisted sexual desires. Always blame victims. I'm guessing he's another incel who kills women because he resents the sexual power they have over him. That's his problem, not theirs. He's frustrated because average women don't want to have a relationship with him, likely because he's an unpleasant, bullying person.

I'm also not going to take his word for anything, even his claims this was not racially motivated. I never place any value or legitimacy in the word of a person who just killed 8 innocent people. Why would anyone trust him? JMO

My hunch (and it's only a hunch), he perhaps started viewing hardcore *advertiser censored* at an impressionable age and that, along with a strict religion, warped his view of sex. He didn't view his sexual desires as acceptable but held the women responsible, imo. Speculation only.

Not sure it goes beyond that. Is he clever enough to claim sex addiction when it really was racial motivation? Maybe, but at this point, I think he's a misogynist with a gun.

That is part of it, imo. But I also see super destructive cases with perps this age as a slow-motion suicide.

They "fail to launch" into adulthood and so destroy their lives to end up in jail, with that as an excuse why they couldn't make it in life. He has to make no more decisions in his life - the state now has taken over responsibility.

We learned he was not living at home, but I am curious how he was doing in life. Was he on the path with an education, job, etc? Or floundering, not living up to potential?

Of course, not everyone who has a struggle into adulthood behaves like this! Most people struggle, and some struggle a lot to find their way. No shame in that whatsover - that is how we learn and mature. But some young men (women have other ways to avoid growing up, imo) destroy what is around them in an unconscious way of destroy their own lives.

He essentially committed suicide on his potential adulthood yesterday, in other words.

Armchair analysis, worth exactly what you paid for it. Opinion and speculation only. And, of course, my sympathies are with his victims and the people left grieving.

Though a hate motive is entirely possible, there is also a distinct possibility of a variation of a sex motive.

There are several variations of prostitution front businesses in my large, urban and diverse city. The most
visible ones that offer walk in services are massage parlors. These are nearly all owned by Asians and use Asian employees either voluntary, coerced or trafficked.

Other businesses include pay for a dance (and more) type bars catering to Hispanics. The initial contact with the prostitute is public and in view of other patrons who might see a non Hispanic customer as "poaching". In the past, a white customer was killed in a brawl following a dispute with other patrons over a "dance and more" offer.

The other venue is said to be voluntary, coerced or trafficked eastern Europeans offering premium escort services for premium prices. My guess is that the suspect would not be able to afford the price.

So....

The fact that most, or perhaps all of the victims were Asian could be a coincidence: Shooter was seeking or had sought entry level prostitution services offering private meetings. These tend to be massage parlors with Asian owners and Asian employees.

I've read in the past week of two Asian men being killed in California. Iirc, one of the victims was a 77 years old gentleman.

So it seems they are being targeted in various states by a variety of offenders.

I believe I've read in the past that Asians are targeted quite often. That's so sad if true.

I just heard on Fox that is parents saw him on surveillance video, and called the police letting them know it was their son they were looking for.

Thank goodness for good parents who does the moral thing even if it's very hard to do.

He was arrested about 40 miles from where we live.

In my large city, the police ignore legally licensed massage parlors or "pay to uhmm... dance" bars operating as prostitution fronts unless....

A. They receive reports of spin off crimes (robbery of clients, muggings, car break ins, drugs, fights, and other drama) or
B. The city is in the midst of a "zero tolerance" campaign.

"Zero tolerance" campaigns occur every four years or so. This usually results in the closures of some parlors where I work and the seizure / razing of others for back taxes (I don't work in the best area). Of course, the parlors re-open at other nearby locations with say, 9-12 months.

So.... my guess is that being licensed and not on the LE radar does not mean "no prostitution". Rather, it just means no high amount of spin off crimes and no zero tolerance campaign.

Police said the suspect, Robert Aaron Long, 21, of Woodstock, Georgia, told authorities that his actions were not racially motivated and that he frequented some of the spas where the shootings took place. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Jay Baker said Long viewed the spas as "a temptation that he wanted to eliminate."

Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant said it was too soon in the investigation to say whether the shootings were a hate crime. "We are just not there as of yet," Bryant said during a Wednesday morning news conference.

The killings came amid a recent wave of attacks against Asian Americans that coincided with the spread of the coronavirus across the United States.

Here's what we know:

Where did the shootings happen?
The first incident happened at Young's Asian Massage Parlor in a strip mall off Highway 92 near a rural area in Acworth, about 30 miles north of Atlanta.

Police received a call around 5 p.m. about the shooting and found five people shot. Two were dead, and three were rushed to a nearby hospital, where two others died. The fifth person was injured but in stable condition Wednesday, Baker said.

Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds said his office immediately released surveillance photos of the suspect and that Long's family contacted the office believing their son was involved.

An hour later, two other shootings occurred across the street from each other in Atlanta on Piedmont Road, at the Gold Spa and the Aromatherapy Spa.

Atlanta police said in a statement that video footage placed the vehicle of the suspect in the Cherokee County shooting in the same area as the shootings in northeast Atlanta.

Authorities contacted the Crisp County Sheriff's Office, anticipating where the suspect might be headed. Sheriff's officials there along with the George State Patrol stopped Long around 8 p.m.

About 10 minutes after the first call was placed, a second one that lasted just over four minutes was made from a woman related to an incident at the Aromatherapy Spa.
