GA - 8 dead after shootings at three spas, Atlanta, 16 Mar 2021 *arrest*

Chosun Ilbo, a top South Korean newspaper, reported Wednesday that the shooter reportedly yelled, “I’m going to kill all Asians!” They cited a surviving witness.

Many people decry stiffer sentences due to the hate crime designation. Usually, in my experience, they are also people who feel that discrimination in general is “overblown”.

The hate crime designation was created for a reason. If a black guy suddenly went on a spree attacking white people with a hammer, yelling he was going to kill all white people, what would your response be if he was charged with a hate crime enhancement?

Regardless, I’m much more concerned about the reaction by a LE leader to this mass murder and his motives behind his casual remarks about the massacre. That’s where I see the real problem. The ethnic origin of the majority of victims and of the murderer seem to have caused empathy toward the defendant and apathy toward the victims and their families. “Well, he was having a bad day. And this is what he did.”

Just awful, to have LE so confidently and causally downplay the actions of a monster.

Great post.

I am gobsmacked that a senior LE would even off the cuff describe the motivations for a mass killing that stretched across sites and nearly states as a man having a bad day.

I get that this may not have been a considered or nuanced response. But it's still a pretty profound category error, IMO, and since it has been rerun a gazillion times it has gained undue prominence as an explanation as well as description. And along with the recent editor of Teen Vogue scandal it must seem like salt in the wounds for many in the communities affected.

I know! I mean there was an article all about what a good, religious guy this creep was. And yet I don’t know one name of any victim.
Four victim names were released yesterday. The other four are pending family notification. The officer at the Atlanta press conference today said they are still trying to reach family in Korea.

It's also just a slap in the face for anyone who does day-to-day defense work because you'd never hear a police officer or prosecutor describe someone picked up for first time drug possession as "having a bad day." They try to paint the person as a useless addict trying to sell drugs to your kids even if the defendant really was a good and moral person who made a bad decision.

But this guy is just a good guy having a bad day? Wowwww.

Connie Wun, co-founder of AAPI Women Lead and a researcher on violence against girls of color, says it’s impossible to "disconnect race from sexism" in the Atlanta killings. "There’s a long-standing history around the hypersexualization, the ongoing sexual violence against Asian women. This has happened across the globe," Wun says.

I just saw the link I needed. Thank you for posting.

I’m guessing the customers were shot because they were in the line of fire? I think there was a man that was critically injured who was outside the store and not Asian.
(Unless he was after everyone connected to that place of business including customers or bystanders)

Wow, this article is crammed full of information. If true, he appears to be a sex addict and just out of rehab. Religious and apparently mentally disturbed is a very dangerous combination.

It can be very true. I have this book called Wisconsin Death Trip which is a collection of photos, news articles and mental ward logs in the 1800’s. And the amount of religious delusion in the articles and logs was astounding.

The absolute hate directed toward Asians right now is incredible - whenever I'd post a reply on Facebook on an article about Covid-19 I'd be slammed with responses like, "go back to China then you Communist" or, "the Chinese Commies invented the virus as a biological weapon, and we're gonna get even with them" or, "Chinese people and Dems are our sworn enemies and must be eliminated - and God said it's okay that it's not a sin to do so". Scary stuff, and really sad too...

from Rolling Stone article:

It’s important to note that there is a good reason for Long to lie about his motivations: Hate crimes tend to carry with them more aggressive charges and lengthier sentences, giving him plenty of incentive to downplay the racial aspects of the attack. But by telling the media the attack did not appear to be racially motivated, Baker, intentionally or not, erased the complex and interlocking issues of racism and misogyny that could exist at the heart of the attack.

Further, by emphasizing that the victims allegedly “tempt[ed]” the shooter, law enforcement officials made the women complicit in perpetuating what they referred to as the shooter’s “sex addiction” (which is, in itself, an extremely controversial and medically dubious diagnosis that has been rejected from the DSM). Officials were then also able to downplay any perceived racial biases behind the attack, while simultaneously underscoring another aspect of the victims’ identity — the fact that they allegedly did sex work — in a way that deprived them of their humanity. (In a statement, Mayor Kesha Lance Bottoms declined to comment on whether the victims were sex workers, stating that to do so would be to engage in “victim-blaming,” a turn of phrase that sex workers pointed out implies that those who do sex work deserve violence to begin with.) In downplaying the racism and misogyny that was probably at play here — while simultaneously emphasizing the victims’ professions — law enforcement officials likely failed to recognize that they were painting a portrait of, and implicitly justifying, another type of hate crime altogether: a hate crime against sex workers.

Also too a lot of the "workers" are actually victims of human trafficking.

Sex addiction is not a recognised addiction or a mental illness. It is frequently self diagnosed by men who cannot or do not want to take responsibility for their bad behaviour and lack of impulse control.

Forgive me if this isn’t allowed. There are organizations that will pair an escort with an Asian-American for safety reasons. I apologize if I have any of the terminology incorrect: this seems to be about pairing a non-AAPI with AAPI for shopping and the like. I’ve already volunteered the adults in our family. Hundreds of people are volunteering to escort elderly Asian Americans to help keep them safe - CNN

I'm very glad to see this!

It's wonderful that you volunteered your family members.

We badly need acts of kindness like this.
