  • ''Atlanta Police Department said in a news release that just after 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, officers responded to a house fire at 973 Bolton Road after Atlanta Fire and Rescue found two people deceased inside the house.

The Fulton County Medical Examiners Office later ruled that the deaths a homicide, according to APD.

One of the victims was identified as the homeowner, Lola Bell Thomas, according to an incident report obtained by WSB-TV. Thomas reportedly lived at the house with her nephew, Bobby Grubbs, who was also found dead. Police say Grubbs died as a result of the house fire, but the cause and manner of his death is currently undetermined, pending the investigation.

The woman was found stabbed multiple times, and her throat was slashed, according to an incident report obtained by WSB-TV.

A charred and loaded 12-gauge pump shotgun was also found inside the house, police said, according to an incident report obtained by WSB-TV.'

"In December 2022, the Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department responded to a house fire in northwest Atlanta, GA. The fire devastated the structure and required aggressive measures to extinguish. Firefighters with the Fire and Rescue Department discovered two deceased individuals, a man and a woman, inside of the home and alerted Atlanta Police Department. As part of the death investigation, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office was dispatched to determine the cause of death and identify the two individuals. The cause of death for both individuals is under investigation, and while Medical Examiners were able to identify the male individual, the female decedent could not be identified due to extensive damage caused by the fire.

As part of an ongoing collaboration with Othram to close unsolved cases, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office once again partnered with Othram to identify the unknown woman. Forensic evidence was sent to Othram's laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas. The funding for this casework was generously provided by Audiochuck and we are very grateful for their support on this case and many others.

Using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing®, Othram scientists developed a comprehensive DNA profile for the female victim. In the course of the investigation, a possible family member contributed a reference DNA swab to help rule out the chance that the victim could be related to them. The family member's DNA profile was compared to the unidentified woman's DNA profile using KinSNP® rapid family testing. Using this information in conjunction with a follow up investigation, the agency was able to confirm the identity of the female victim as 85-year-old homeowner, Lola Bell Thomas. Ms. Thomas was born May 28, 1937 and resided in the home with her nephew. Her nephew was the second person identified at the crime scene.''

Looks like a murder-suicide case. Maybe the nephew was overwhelmed with caring for her. Or he maybe suffered from some mental illness that made him kill her, set the house on fire and shoot himself or just let himself die in the fire.
In any case whoever did that wanted to literally burn everything to the ground and wipe out everything connected to the house. Classic overkill. A random home invader would normally not slit one inhabitants throat while the other one is alive and then burn everything. Some cases, yes, certainly similar things happened, but the profile is more consistent with someone very emotionally wanting to erase memories.
Do we know more about the nephew?

How awful. So many horrible crimes and unintentional disappearances occurring to our elderly folks.

I feel there are so many layers to that. The nephew appeared to be an older single man, quite overweight looking. I wonder what his story was. Did he suffer from mental illness, depression or something else? Was he her caretaker and felt he could not manage anymore? The whole scenario appears to have been an overkill reaction with him stabbing her multiple times and slashing her throat to make sure she is dead. Then setting fire and apparently commiting suicide either with the rifle or just by inhaling smoke.

I hope both are at peace and the family will find solace.
