COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) — A man suspected in Wednesday's fatal shooting at a Georgia megachurch was once committed to a mental health facility in Maryland after facing various criminal charges including attempted murder, according to court records.

Police in Georgia said Floyd Palmer, 51, walked into a chapel at World Changers Church International just before a 10 a.m. service and opened fire, killing church volunteer Greg McDowell, 39, while he was leading a prayer.

"He walked in calmly, opened fire, and left as calmly," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said..............

Palmer was taken into custody without incident a few hours later at an upscale mall in Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood, Lester said. Police spotted his car in the parking lot of Lenox Square. They didn't recover a weapon.

He was being charged with homicide and possession of firearms in commission of a homicide, with additional charges pending..................

Accused Ga. church gunman thought NFL’s Ray Lewis was out to get him in 2001 mosque shooting

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...6e5740-1e38-11e2-8817-41b9a7aaabc7_story.html

BALTIMORE — A former megachurch maintenance man accused of killing a volunteer leading a prayer service in a Georgia chapel was charged more than a decade ago with a shooting at a mosque in Maryland, according to police documents.

Floyd Palmer was part of a security detail at a Baltimore mosque in June 2001 when he shot another man working with him, wounding him in the back, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday. Palmer tried to fire again, but the gun jammed. When other people ran over to him, he turned the gun on them, but it wouldn’t fire, according to the documents................

Palmer was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2004 after pleading not criminally responsible to the mosque shooting. Despite objections from prosecutors, a judge released him in 2006 on the condition he abide by a number of restrictions for five years................more......

And we see how well that worked out...

It appears the prosecutors were right!

He should NOT have been released.

Wonder how that judge feels NOW?!
