This perp would have to be exceptionally strong to run a knife that length/depth, no?!

I think it would take a lot of strength but more importantly the knife would need to be very sharp. The perp was likely standing over her when he cut that and would be able to leverage the weight of his body.

Great points. However, I’ve been in Piedmont park after dark and it is extremely dark in certain areas. Nobody would have been able to see anything. Also, a lot of wild things go on in Piedmont after dark (sex, drug use, homeless ppl sleeping everywhere, etc) so if you’re in the park and see something in the shadows, you kinda just mind your business.
I think Katie’s pants were pulled down because her killer dragged her by the legs to a location that wasn’t as dark after he finished.

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I also live in ATL (56 years now) and am also very familiar with the park. I have also been in the park after dark, and agree that it is extremely dark in certain areas - but not in all areas.

The areas that are not as dark include the areas near the gates and around the perimeter of the park where streetlights lining the streets/roads and entries around the park provide some (though admittedly not a lot) of light.

One can see just how much light is available however by watching the videos released by APD early on - when they were first trying to identify the six (6) possible “witnesses” seen in the areas of the 12th St and CA gates.

EC supposed saw Bowie lying on a concrete walk / path (one article described the location as: immediately after she entered the park). I’ve also read “about 50’ inside the gate”.

She then “went further into the park”, and again according to several articles I’ve read, found KJ some 100’ feet away from Bowie. I have however read other articles which give the impression that KJ was found some 100 - 150 yards into the park, so, it’s hard for us to know the exact locations,

In any event, it apparently was easy for EC to spot Bowie after she entered, and she didn’t have to go far into the park from Bowie’s location to find KJ. I believe the area KJ was found would have been dark, but not extremely dark. That’s just my opinion. But saying “Nobody would be able to see anything” is not backed up by fact, and imo, should be accompanied by a jmo, imo or moo

After all, the shocked witness (sometimes referred to as the wtf witness) who EC spoke to (screamed to) while frantically speaking on the phone with the 911 operator from outside the CA gate, saw the bodies while obviously being within earshot of EC.

I also don’t believe that the reason KJ’s pants were down was “because her killer dragged her by the legs to a location that wasn’t as dark after he finished”. I see no reason why any killer would do such a thing. I believe KJ’s pants were down because the killer pulled them down to inflict wounds in that area (as described in the autopsy). I still think the attack was frenzied and took place in roughly 5 min, that’s just my opinion

I just think it should not be presumed that the attack took place deep deep in the park where nobody could see or hear Bowie or KJ and where the killer was able to take his time - and that the killer then, for some reason, drug both bodies back into a more well lit area where they could be seen. Is it possible? Yes, Can we state it as fact? No.

It’s for another post, but I have wondered all along whether the killer first incapacitated Bowie (and / or then KJ) with a taser type weapon. There have been no reports from LE however to suggest this.

Hey there! I thought it was obvious that everything I expressed was my opinion. I have to remember to use my imos and jmos on this site. My perspective is based on the fact that, to date, no one has publicly claimed to have seen or heard anything. Given the darkness in certain areas, and the fact that there are no known witnesses, I didn't think it was unreasonable to suggest that no one witnessed the event.

The District Attorney, who has access to far more information than we do, stated that the "killer took his time." I'm sure she had reasons for making that assertion. While I don't believe the attack took 30 minutes, I also doubt it was over in less than 5 minutes. The perp managed to avoid leaving any biological evidence that the police have been able to use thus far which suggests they were careful and deliberate.
It's hard for me to imagine someone stabbing or cutting a person 50 times in under 5 minutes without injuring themselves and leaving DNA evidence behind. Lastly, I recall detectives searching the lake and other areas, so it's possible that the attack didn't only occur in the spot where she was found.

Well, I sure as hell hope that the APD holds a press conference and not just release that three sentence statement. It’s totally unacceptable for the APD not to account to the public on the status of the investigation by explaining what they have been doing for three years, what they are currently doing and what their ongoing plans are for the investigation. It is stunning to me that a PUBLIC police department believes it is adequate to simply declare this is an open case and the investigation is ongoing. If that’s true APD, show the public some concrete evidence of that. The APD’s approach to this case enrages me and should enrage all of us. RIP Katie and Bowie (if you can).

Exactly. It was the pressure from the family that no doubt helped solved the Rachel Morin rape/murder. Also, the APD could take a page from the investigation book of Sheriff Sills in Putnam County just south of Atlanta in the Dermond Murders at Lake Oconee. He’s provided the public with so much information about that double murder. It’s kept the public attention on it for 10 years. And, I believe that’s what will ultimately get it solved. Unfortunately, I’m not as optimistic about Katie’s case. We’ll see if APD can at least release the necropsy on Bowie.

I have not read all of the pages here and only know the broad strokes of the case, so please forgive me if this theory has been discussed or doesn’t make sense. Please let me know what you all think:

I’m thinking through how the perp could subdue both victims without losing physical control of one or both while attacking the other.

If the perp was known to the victims, as police think, is it possible that Bowie taken “hostage” by the perp to control KJ? Do we know anything about Bowie’s temperament and obedience level? Could the perp have used knowledge of both victims’ behavior to gain control of his leash?

Once he had Bowie in close proximity, he could have made any number of verbal threats that Bowie may not have understood if done in a neutral tone of voice. Threats to Bowie may have been enough to subdue KJ and gain her cooperation to not scream to draw attention or run away. MOO

They said they believe the attack happened soon after she entered the park- what is that based on? Is that timeframe based on the proximity to where she entered the park?

All I know is I'd do anything anyone said if they had my puppy baby

I think of this case often. It has haunted me from day one. It’s reprehensible the killer is still out there, maybe thinking they got away with it. Equally reprehensible is that LE has not kept this case in the public eye. Three years and no developments? Even if LE knows who did it but can’t charge the murderer due to lack of evidence, providing regular updates and/or asking for tips can only help their case. Poor Katie and Bowie deserve better! And their loved ones deserve justice.

IMO, there are a few aspects about what happened to Katie and her dog that stand out to me. 1. Despite the murder location being close to businesses and homes, and frequented by late night park goers, no one heard a dog barking or a woman scream...the style of attack appears to have circumvented the dog from barking and Katie from screaming. 2. It appears Katie was listening to earbud music when she and Bowie were attacked, leaving her somewhat vulnerable; she probably wasn't able to hear much about her immediate surroundings...particularly someone approaching her and Bowie from outside the park gateway behind her. 3. It appears the dog was quickly disabled and killed first...it seems possible to me, the killer used a taser on the buttocks of Bowie, instantly disabling him for a quick fatal assault. 4. The shock of seeing her dog instantly and brutally killed caused Katie to impulsively run into the park...where the killer(s) quickly subdued her. According to the autopsy report, Katie had defensive wounds on her hands...imo, she was already on the ground severely wounded when her hands were cut and she was unable to scream for help...giving the killer time to inflict torture. Despite many theories suggesting the attacker impulsively and randomly targeted Katie and her dog and/or the killer was a deranged psychopath, it seems to me that this murder was a calculated and planned execution. The sheer amount of convenient circumstances...no murder noises (screams or barking), the killing taking place close to a park gate exit, the purposeful signature knife wounds on Katie, suggest that the killer(s) crafted a specific type of killing for a set of specific reasons...e.g., a highly organized/ detailed killing with the intent of not getting caught. Lastly, I find it interesting...Katie's trip plans to visit her mother the following day apparently had some bearing on the late evening events leading up to her early morning murder in the Piedmont Park.

I firmly believe, and have from the beginning (and IMO), that the date was a Huge factor in this murder being committed at that particular time. I also feel it was carefully planned-many aspects appear to fit together too neatly and the killer is still living free. As we all do, I want an arrest and some answers!!!

Murder cases that receive a lot of ongoing police and media attention are usually spurred on by family, friends, and concerned citizens demanding information and/or a resolution. Someone here mentioned that they were puzzled by the lack of any apparent community discussions, meetings, informal gossip around the murder of Katie and Bowie...specifically, there appears to be little agitation from the community at the neighborhood bar where Katie worked, from the neighborhood residents/businesses or from other colleagues of Katie's, i.e., her music associates, etc. It's as if a dark canopy of silence envelopes this awful killing creating a vacuum of no action or updates. I would have expected a flurry of media, police and concerned citizens chiming in constantly with tips and opinions--similar to other terrible killings until some break through was made. Activating and installing new street and park cameras seems like an appeasing effort from the city officials to assure the community that another killing of this savageness won't happen again, and if it does law enforcement will have a way of catching the killer--not so much an effort to solve Katie and Bowie's murder.

I want to share some more ideas on Katie and Bowie's murder in Piedmont park; having spent yesterday researching the historical development of Piedmont Park--i.e., previous and current socioeconomic aspects, along with reviewing as many as I could find--online published articles, videos and podcasts covering the Katie Janness case, the issue of a public based killing vs. a private murder seems relevant to me. Namely, if some had a personal vendetta against Katie they could have orchestrated her killing with a lot less drama and flair--the murder of her would have had a private element to it, imo. Instead, the killer selected a highly frequented area..with a lot of public visibility and economic viability. Also, the manner of the killing highlighted one's worst fears...suffering helplessly against precision brutality. It seems to me, terribly ironic that the only video camera picture of Katie released to the public is of her and Bowie walking in the LGBT rainbow painted crosswalk shortly before they were killed. The officials claim that the park cameras were defunct...however, nine years early another murder occurred in Piedmont Park, and the same excuse was given...explaining why law enforcement had no leads. There is something about Katie and Bowie's horrific murder in Piedmont Park that doesn't add up.

To add to my previous comment, I think it's possible there is a political/social motivation in Katie's murder. It seems similar to me as the Whitechapel murders in the late 1800s...most of the women killed were also savaged with knife slash wounds and abdominal mutilations. On a side note, it might be worthwhile reaching out to Caroline Silva reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Consitution. She seems to have covered the Katie Janness case very well with a lot of detail and updates. Perhaps, she would be willing to delve further into what is happening now with the investigation and the community's present sentiment.

I have always thought that the locale of the crime was significant because Katie was doing one of her absolute favorite activities in one of her favorite places to be.

Katie’s 44th birthday was last week. Thanks to those of you who have been with this group and Katie and Bowie all along. It’s hard to believe it’s been three years (+) already. Doesn’t seem like it. Let’s hope the end of the search is near. <3
