GUILTY GA - University of Georgia Laken Hope Riley, 22, found dead near University of Georgia intramural fields, foul play suspected, 22 Feb 2024

They had two other incidents in the area near his apartment that morning -- one was a peeping Tom call, and the other was a man trying to break in. They found camera footage of the man involved in the peeping Tom incident, who was wearing a hooded jacket. Another camera nearby showed a man putting a hooded jacket into the dumpster at his apartment complex about 16 minutes after the murder and stashing gloves in a hedge. From there, I believe that when they started talking to people at the complex, he was sitting outside his apartment (the article is a little vague, but the body cam footage was shown at trial and he was seated on a chair right outside the door) and they started chatting with him and noticing that he could be the person they saw on camera, and while talking to him, noticed some fresh scratches. Thanks! So was this the next day?

I saw the video, wasn;t the guy outside his brother and the perpetrator was inside in bed and then taken outside?

Yes you're correct - he was asleep and then taken outside which is where the outside clips of them talking to him were. Yes, it was the next day.

I believe they had surveillance video pretty quickly, including of the distinctive hats he and his brother wore, and started asking around at the apartments to track him down.

Yes. Totally. I once saw a crime starting to unfold before my eyes when I went to my local convenience store. Two guys were arguing on the street across from the store when I went in. When I came out, lo and behold, one guy now had a baseball bat and was coming towards the other man. I yelled, "STOP!! I'm watching! I'm a witness!" The guy with a bat stopped. I kept talking... "Don't do it. Don't! It's not worth it! You could end up in jail! I'm a witness!" (I felt safe enough because there was a street between us, and I could run into the store if he came after me.) Bat man turned, shouted in disgust, "You're a witness to nothing!" and walked away. The other fellow came across the street to thank me. He said the other guy accused him of stealing his baseball cap. Can you imagine someone could have ended up dead and another one in prison for years over a baseball cap?
That took some guts! What if Bat Man also had a gun? He could have shot at, and hit, you from across a street.

Some of the "Venezuelan gangs" people are blaming that for this. I don't think so; he could have been a life-long Georgia resident and done the same thing. (I mean, how do that know that these people or those people are Venezuelan gang members? Are they wearing t-shirts and carrying signs advertising this, or what?) Anyway, Laken should be remembered for the way she lived, not the way she died.

Looks like Ibarra made it to the state prison system -

He'll commit no more crimes for the rest of his life, but there's a fair chance that another inmate may commit a violent crime on him during his incarceration. He will have a large target on his back to be sure.
Not losing any sleep over him. Good riddance.

I have zero sympathy for men who violently murder women.

for all, we know he SA other women but was too afraid to report it, or did and weren't taken seriously or the tests haven't been processed yet.

Thanks. He's at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison near Jackson, GA.

Thanks for posting that. I was wondering how tall he was. I thought he was probably like five seven from the pictures. But I'm surprised he's only 5'4. That's probably why Laken Riley fought so hard, because she thought she might have a chance against him because he wasn't that big. Edit- Or tall I mean specifically. He was relatively muscular and bigger in weight than she was.

5"4"...185....does not look fat. He looks like a lot of muscle. Did he maybe do construction or landscaping without paperwork?

Ibarra was looking for a victim that morning as well before he attacked LR. If it had not been LR, he would've preyed on some other unsuspecting UGA student out running, walking alone somewhere, or coming back from the bars late at night. Unfortunately, it was inevitable.

House passes Laken Riley Act
Posted: Jan 7, 2025 / 04:34 PM EST /Updated: Jan 7, 2025 / 04:45 PM

The Laken Riley Act would require federal authorities to detain illegal immigrants arrested, charged or convicted of theft-related crimes.

and

The bill also lets states sue federal agencies for failing to enforce immigration laws.

The bill's main provision would change the Immigration and Nationality Act to read:

Detention of criminal aliens. The Attorney General shall take into custody any alien who is inadmissible ... and is charged with, is arrested for, is convicted of, admits having committed, or admits committing acts which constitute the essential elements of any burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting offense

Yes, thank you. It's the big news item of today.

The Laken Riley Act was described by Trump as a “landmark law” and “tremendous tribute” to the slain Georgia nursing student for whom it is named. The law mandates that people in the U.S. illegally who are accused of theft and violent crimes be detained and potentially deported, even before a conviction.

The Laken Riley Act, written by Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., would require ICE to take custody of and detain undocumented immigrants who are charged, arrested or convicted of committing acts of "burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting."
