It is puzzling. Maybe in their haste to get out information, mistakes were made and not yet corrected. Or.......
I wish we could see where Cat was found along with an area map.

Was this photo taken 3 days later and searchers did not look down to see if she was 60 or 300 feet below the summit lookout?

The searchers aid something about the puppy helping find the body, didn't they, and if the puppy was found 3 days later and this photo shows three people in the photo touching/finding the puppy, why wasn't she found until 3 days later?

First of all, the puppy was found on Friday, not 6 days later, but 72 hours.

Catherine Shaw: Puppy walked by missing British backpacker found alone in Guatemala

A statement on the Facebook page said the animal was found alive on Friday morning at the highest lookout of Indian Nose, a volcano overlooking Lake Atitlan.

If searchers made a big mistake about the location of her coat, now would be a could time to correct this - presumably the Daily Mail can make the correction. It was also reported that her purple dress was found on the hike. I'm curious about where on the hike her pink coat/jacket was found and where her purple dress was found, or was it one of the things she gave away so it was found in the opposite direction from town, the volcano and her body?

Great. She fell off the side of a volcano, her puppy was found after 3 days, her body was found 6 days later. Was the puppy alone for 3 days without food and water. Was anyone searching for her? Didn't she have a friend from California named Elena?

When was this photo taken - please note that the puppy is in the center of this photo and it is presented as a photo from the day that she was found, day 6. Why would the puppy be on the volcano on day 6 if the stray puppy was found on day 3. Why did no one looked down if people were searching for her and the puppy? Why would anyone bring the puppy back to the lookout on Day 6? Could police not figure out where to look without the dog?

They used where the puppy was found as a starting point. Not the actual puppy, though one rescue worker claims to have found and taken in the pup. And they started from there, searching and eventually using helicopters to search below the lookout where it was difficult to reach.

Not sure if that's THE puppy. Or even a puppy. Looks blurry to me. Photo caption doesn't mention any dog. They did use search dogs. Elena was a friend she traveled with for two weeks while in Guatemala, as I understand. And yes, puppy was alone for 3 days, found shivering and crying alone.

Is that a facebook page? It seems like a jumbled mess of opinion. Is there anything at the link that matters?

How did they figure out that it was her puppy? Did someone trekking on the volcano come forward with a puppy that they found 3 days earlier who did not know that there was a missing woman hiking to the volcano? Did that person adopt the puppy?

Putting a puppy on the side of a volcano hardly seems like an insight. Surely rescue workers thought about looking over the edge when they learned that her puppy was found on the side of the volcano ... without the puppy.

Using the location is great, why bring the puppy?
Presumably the location was given by someone who found the puppy at that location three days after she vanished.

Sorry, the photo is misleading. The photo is allegedly from day 6, the puppy was found day 3, and the implication is that searchers found the puppy and then found her body. That's not what happened.

Similarly, if we believe early reports about where her coat was found, it does not add up with the story that she shed her clothing on the hike.

I don't believe they used the puppy itself in the search. the worker found her again later after looking for her. Maybe though - not sure about that. Seems they could not see over the edge where she was located. Also time that puppy was found and time that searches were organized..all didn't happen on the same day.

It's a page set up and there are comments by the admin about the search and one of the searchers in particular. Also MSM links. I've found it to be useful in sorting out some of the info. She was seen carrying the puppy and also in videos at the hostel she had her. The puppy was id'ed as the same one after hikers found it on the lookout. This info has been posted and verified previously, but don't know exactly which links. Her friend Elena knew the puppy so betting she recognized it. She was reported missing right away and with a puppy. From all reports it's a small town and info would travel quickly.

Puppy was found (tracked down) by one of the rescue workers and said to be in her possession. Read the reports on the FB page posted by the searcher.

I'm trying to help you here with what I've read. Sorry if this seems jumbled but you asked a bunch of questions.

Yes earlier it was reported that the jacket was in an opposite location. That's confusing too, unless you consider maybe someone found it and moved it. Who knows how far she was from the hostel when she took it off and dropped it.

This was written by one of the main searchers in Cat's recovery, Amy Farrow. It is posted in the Ex-Pats Living in Guatemala private Facebook page. I have been given permission to post it here by the author since it isn't posted on the Finding Catherine Shaw Facebook page. If it isn't permitted I apologize but getting timely accurate information from the Guatemalan press is nearly impossible:

*modnote*/ it is not permitted from private personal fb, however it was meanwhile reposted by the Find page, so it may remain
    Finding Catherine Shaw

As a group of mostly volunteers and a few close friends of #catherineshaw, we have elected to make a final statement today and close this page. We are still deeply saddened by the death of such a beautiful soul like hers. We were relieved and cried tears of joy when we were told by our sources with the morgue that the rape kit came back negative and there was no evidence of foul play. Because she was found naked, specific crime scene protocols were enacted, as they should be to investigate the nature of Catherine's death.

My time at Fuego and other disasters in addition to my EMS experience taught me you have to look at the whole picture to try to know what happened. While it may be understandably alarming to find Catherine's body naked, Catherine's clothes were found near to where she fell. There were no signs of tearing, blood, semen or anything conducive to the rumors that were initially swirling. From that moment on I truly believed this is what happened (which has now been personally confirmed by myself, Amy Farrow, after interviewing with the special victims unit of the Ministerio Publico [MP] for crimes against women here in #guatemala):

    1. Catherine Shaw was a Yoga instructor, Reiki practitioner, and an incredibly spiritual person. She was fasting for spiritual reasons the week before her death. As her friends called her an old soul but in this life, she was 23 years old exploring the world learning about what really matters in life: adventure, love, and friendship. In regards to rumors Cat was intoxicated, using drugs or working with hallucinogenic flowers, I spent hours watching and rewatching all the video surveillance of Cat in her last hours at the Hotel. In my professional opinion as a paramedic, she appeared sober and was acting normal. I saw no behavior to suggest she was intoxicated with any substances.

    2. The hotel surveillance video was only initially only watched up until the point of seeing her leave with a hand-drum at 0137 leaving with a drum. Once her good friend Elena told us she was actually in possession of the drum, we realized there was a gap in the story and asked to see the rest of the video footage. This is how we discovered that she left twice, once returning to the hostel at 3:21 and then leaving again with only a jacket and puppy in tow at 0523. This changed the whole story. Around the same time, we were informed that Catherine's puppy had been found on top of Indian's nose by a hiker Friday. We were able to share a photo of the puppy with her friend Elena, who confirmed that it was indeed Catherine's.

    3. Given this new evidence or the puppy and new timeline, we began working on a theory that Catherine went out to do the popular Indian's Nose hike to view the sunrise. That Sunday, we had about 30 volunteers as well as local police. One of our volunteers found a jacket near the base of the trail. We confirmed with her close friend Paco, who flew in from Mexico just to aid in the search, that this jacket was indeed hers. We feel it is also important to note that this jacket had all of Catherine's jewelry still in it 6 days later. For us, this indicated that she removed the jacket as the heat of the hike came on, placed her jewelry in the pockets, and placed it aside to pick up on her way back down.

    4. Having the jacket, we decided to focus our efforts entirely on the Indian Nose trails. The next morning we were fortunate to have the aid of search dogs (who were provided to us by KSAR Guatemala for no charge!), a medical helicopter crew, the local police, and local guides. We started combing the area near where we found the jacket as well as GPS points of interest that my friend in California made for us.

    5. After the first hour in the helicopter, the flight medic and I narrowed Catherine's location to two places. At this point my friend Johanna, another incredibly strong woman who happens also be a local reporter, came walking up with a few local police. (The previous day, Johanna lead a team to literally knock on the mayor's door to appeal for the backing and support of the town.) I advised Johanna two focus on two places: The woods in the back side of the Indian's Nose or the front in two different ravines that were covered with trees too thick to see in the air. I gave Johana a very intense directive: when we find Catherine (we all felt it was close) and she is not alive, please stay with the body and take video, pictures and anything that you think would help her family conduct their own private investigation if need be. Within 20 minutes, a team spotted Cat's body. It was an extremely dangerous mission for them to get to her. She was a 100 meters down from the very top of the "nose". Johana stayed with Catherine's body to ensure she was treated with the utmost respect and she risked her life to take video as well as photos of the scene in case it was foul play. She did not leave Cat's side until she was transferred to the morgue in the early hours of the following morning. Even though Johanna is a local reporter, she refused to feed into the media frenzy until we had all the FACTS. After reviewing this footage, images of her body and considering all of the things we learned about Catherine since Sunday morning, I am confident this was an accident.

To an untrained eye, her body did look severely "beaten" by the trees and rocks on the way down. In my professional opinion, she died very quickly and did not suffer. We suspect she passed out when she stood up after her meditation session due to the 5 day fast she was on, lost her footing, and fell.

There is no government cover-up. Again: no government cover-up. All of us who were there through this whole experience, those closest to her agree with and accept the results of her autopsy. For anyone who knows me, you know I am leery of any government and after what I went through here with Volcano Fuego, I would be the FIRST person to say something was wrong if I suspected the police did not do their due diligence. We were very upset that the photo of Catherine that was leaked caused many media outlets to immediately and irresponsibly report that she was raped and murdered even before her body was even removed from the mountain! This sensationalized reporting is something we adamantly denounce. For reports that are factually accurate and verified by our team of volunteers, please see the links on our page.

    6. Why was she naked? Catherine was a braver soul than me with the freedom of her body! I spoke with a few friends that said it was totally normal for her to meditate naked in nature. From all the evidence on the scene, that is exactly what she did. Bravo Catherine for being a such a powerful woman! I love even more that it was a group of powerful women who found you.

    7. This experience, while tragic and horrible, also brought out the beauty of the lake and people who inhabit these towns. I am so proud of everyone involved and there are just too many people to thank.

*** For those interested we will be holding an International Press Conference on March 23rd and having a ceremony at the top of Indian Nose in Cat's honor. We have also released statements to the Mayan community to the communities of San Juan and Santa Clara as they were all so crucial in helping as well as deeply concerned given the lies that spread like wildfire from the media. ***

Thank you for the update Estrella. (It is now also on the Facebook page by the way). It was an impressive effort to find her. Made me think how a focused and determined privately-coordinated search could be even more effective than LE.

Hopefully a official report will verify her version, which also involves some conjecture. For example, the kit being returned negative, while ‘good’ news, surely does not exclude any form of assualt?

Re: the hike. It is difficult to get a sense of the path with very few English posts. I found this guide, which may at least give some impression of the path from San Juan, and once more details are known, to understand better what might have happened that day.

The puzzling thing is that after 05:00 it sounds difficult to undertake this hike without encountering any other people on the way. Hikers, ticket booth workers, locals etc.. but maybe there is a remote path.

    https://connectedhorizons.co.uk/2017/12/30/how-to-climb-indian-nose-without-a-guide/

One piece of advice is to only travel with money needed to pay (if demanded) and to leave all personal items behind (paraphrase). In that light, the jacket with jewellery left on the path doesn’t sound unlikely at least

Thank you, Estrella, your post has made me cry. I know now that what I truly hoped had happened is likely to be the truth - that in a moment of happiness being at one with nature, she just lost her balance and fell. So sad that Cat's adventure has been cut short but comforted that she died doing something that meant so much to her.

Thank you @Estrella for the thorough account of Cat's disappearance, the search for and discovery of her body, and some tender details about her and her lifestyle. I'm also happy to picture her last moments as peacefully meditating, perhaps as the sun rose over that beautiful lake, with its warm rays touching her skin. And so pleased that, if she had to die, she did not suffer violence at the hands of any person from the country she was embracing.

I have been following this tragic event and personally, I do have questions about Catherine's presumed accident.
As a free spirit Catherine could have indeed stripped off and worshipped the rising sun. However, she does not seem one bit high on the cctv images, contrary to the info given. And, even if she would have stripped off herself, why is everyone so certain that she would have been all alone at that time? What are the chances that there would have been someone else in the vicinity? If the Nariz Maya is so popular, would Catherine have been the only person at that spot?

Also, I have seen an image of the location where Catherine has been found and I have not been able to spot any broken branches. If Catherine would have fallen down from above and she would have rolled down the last part, the brittle shrubs would show some traces.

This is all so tragic. I don't think we have seen the location where Catherine was found. As long as the image does not show Catherine could you post a pic please?
I was almost relieved to read @ Estrella's post. What dedication those who knew her and others have shown in the search to find Catherine. So many lovimg, caring people involved. Namaste.

I am not sure the picture shows enough to determine if branches and such are broken.

i have seen the photo of her body. The branches where she is lying are not thick enough to be broken. It looks more like tall weeds and bushes and thin branches of low trees. The body looks as if it sustained damage from falling from pretty high and maybe rolling down a hill a bit. Because she was naked she more or less blended into the vegetation.
