If the 2nd Amendment is meant to keep us armed and ready for a tyrannical takeover or some such, and it is our "right" to be armed any which way we choose, why is this illegal to own?

I am disturbed by the GA incident today for more than teacher with a gun can also be a bad guy with a gun when many assumed that teachers would always be the good guy with the gun.

The students tried to go in the room and reported to the principal that he would not allow them in. The principal went more than once to gain entry to the room. He should not have----the teacher (popular and demonstrating behavior that was uncharacteristic) closing the door on him and locking it was showing signs that a LEO/Medical team needed to be called. The principal created a greater risk of harm to anyone in the area by trying to go in again.

Many schools have threat assessment teams (which would always include administration). When looking at potential threats (teachers, admins, students, families, and other personnel) our team talked about people of concern AND what to do if there were behaviors of concern. We discussed action plans for exactly this scenario. Anyone who barricades themselves into a room/area and is acting erratically should not be approached by anyone not in LE or EMT field.

Exactly. 2nd amendment rights should include any weapon the state military has access to. I am sure the founding fathers envisioned this exact scenario. I am sure of it!

I'm really glad some positive real change has happened as a result of this terrible tragedy I hope it continues.

I think its great to see these companies step up and set some rules about selling guns and ammunition. It helps to remind us all that change does not only come from government -- individuals and groups can start making changes too.

I'm thinking that since these mass shootings keep happening, its only a matter of time before people get sick of it and things start changing. Kind of like with the Vietnam war, it took time for large numbers of people to start opposing that. It is sad that so many people have already been killed, injured, or disabled for life in these events, but I think things are really starting to change after this most recent one.

These kids in Florida who are the latest victims are at the perfect age to speak up and take some political action. They are social media savvy. They have the tools such as twitter to quickly get their message out there.

There is no one thing that is going to 100% prevent gun violence. That is why I don't like when suggestions get shot down because they aren't perfect. Human natures is too complex for there to ever be perfect solutions. The phrase "perfect is the enemy of the good" comes to mind.

I personally think red flag laws have a lot of potential and I hope that more of them get passed.

Yes! I love these quotes from Mr. Stack:

Mr. Stack said the retailer had begun scouring its purchase records shortly after the identity of the accused Parkland killer, Nikolas Cruz, became known. The company soon discovered that it had legally sold a gun to Mr. Cruz in November, though it was not the type used in the school shooting.

“But it came to us that we could have been a part of this story,” Mr. Stack said. “We said, ‘We don’t want to be a part of this any longer.’”

    NYTimes https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/...r-will-stop-selling-assault-style-rifles.html

That response raised rounds of discussions with the company’s top executives and its directors, all of whom backed the decision to take a stand, Mr. Stack said.

He said Dick’s remained a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and would continue to sell a variety of sport and hunting firearms. Although he has never been a member of the N.R.A., Mr. Stack said, he is a gun owner and enjoys trapshooting.

Bbm - It doesn't count. Hunting and trapping was life way before the supermarket. And is still the way of life for a large portion of man and woman kind, today. Though I abhor suffering, I never had to fend in nature for my supper, and I am not a vegan either.

And for those who choose to hunt for a meal even though they don't have to, I have total respect.

But we are talking about guns. And the article I referenced is about the gratuitous torture markers of potential and / or fledged killers, mass murderers.

Where to draw the line? We could open a whole other thread on the subject.

At the sport end of gratituous with guns? The one that trashes the laws of nature? --Live targets are nothing new. It's been going on for a long time... Including one time in the Olympics in 1900.

Some birds die a slow, horrible, painful death, buried alive and end up on no one's dinner table...

The power of the student's speech is being seen. I believe they are changing the conversation in this country with the narrative that requires all to look at them and hear their stories. Social media does indeed have the power to be very positive.

By the way, it was heartening to see these students go back to school and find hugs mixed with laughter as they deserve it. I read somewhere about a girl who went back today after last week picking up her backpack with a bullet hole in it. To have the courage to go back after seeing how close she came to being a different victim is pretty remarkable to me,

The prior two threads answer these three questions quite thoroughly, imo.

I was just commenting on the absurdity that we as a society tolerate massacre of animals so that we can eat luxuriously yet we condemn any child and project them as a future serial killer if they hurt their pet.
Children who hurt animals are not doomed to be mass or serial killers. Not even close. In fact, many children learn compassion after hurting an animal. JMO
