Intentions are good but please no one take any action or contact this gentleman’s former employer. That will not help him at all, trust me. I’m sure he will be fine.

Think these folks just need the Internet to kindly step back. lol

I too am amazed. I have never seen such done for a search and rescue, and I am really looking forward to finding out more about this coordination and how it was done. I'm trying to catch up in this thread, and if anybody has information on what apps they used and how they did it, please. Do search-and-rescue use this all the time with law enforcement? How is it that civilians were able to do this?

If referring to my boycott comment, I’m not suggesting one of those bashing social media fests. :) Just say’n I personally would not choose to do business with any company that fired someone under these circumstances.

Exactly. I wouldn't want to go back to work for that place!

Amanda's brother was apparently very helpful with this, since the family has a business that does something GPS related. The ball was already rolling when he got in, but he made it even more sophisticated. There are many apps that record your movement very precisely, but it's super important to coordinate all the volunteers, so data won't go to waste.

True, but if she had a phone with location services on they could have found her the next day.

She wasn’t in the middle of a suburb. It’s extremely unlikely someone in a ravine in the jungle has cell phone service at all, let alone enough bandwidth to allow for location services to work.

I’m always amazed at how people who live in suburbia take cell phone coverage completely for granted.

K9enzo Ditto to the quote about leaving employer alone.

So does gps tracking need a cell tower to work? I thought gps is satellites, not cell coverage.

It would have given searchers something to work with. Even with spotty service.

The larger point for hikers before going off trail: If all you have is yoga pants and running shoes, don't go!

Yes, GPS works off of satellites and would have prevented her from getting lost.

The most amazing news this morning. God Bless that fellow in charge of the search. Chris Berquist found her while he was in a helicopter looking for her. Kind of amazing that this man that lead the search and gave up everything to stay focused and find Amanda was the one to bring her home!!

I know a couple places where you can’t be found in plan sight w/cellphone. Those dang mountains.

My issue is 3 days/72 hours and hawaii gave up, it was the publics donations that helped fund the search that found her.

    ....

URGENT UPDATE! Amanda has been found. She got lost and was stuck and slightly injured in the forest- way way out....

Considering she was last seen 17 days ago, family members said Friday evening that Eller appeared to be in remarkably good shape: she did not have any broken bones and was ‘very alert and very aware,’ though she did suffer from some abrasions and severe sun exposure.

I don't think all phones have real GPS built in but those that do can get location without any service. It can drain battery quicker than network assisted locating, but it's still useful.

I bet she had coverage. She wasn't far from civilization at all.

In any case, it would have told her where she was.

People can go months without food depending on their body weight. And while people typically say only a few days without water it's clearly inaccurate. I see people voluntarily dry fasting (no food, water or any fluid at all) all the time and they go way way longer than that. And when they deprive people of IV fluid to "let them die" they almost always live way way longer than predicted. It took Terri Schiavo almost 14 days to die. I think they need to redo the standard claims on how long someone can live because they are so inaccurate.

This is a tourist area. It seems like people get lost all the time. They can't run searches for 2+ weeks for everyone. People need to be more self reliant and not wander off in the Forest like you are walking in a neighborhood.

Amanda is very fortunate to have had so many people come to her rescue.

What I was referring to has zero to do with a cell phone. They are worthless in many remote locations (don’t think you should leave them behind however).

Here’s an example of a PLB. Invest in one. It’s worth the money. It’s your life.
