Regarding the NY Times article someone linked...I just read it.

I'm a little confused when she is talking about her "very strong gut instinct" and intuition.

When she first got lost out there, she describes her gut instinct leading her out into the jungle away from her vehicle, away from the way which she had come -- and yet she praises her gut instinct/intuition for leading her away. So...is she saying she feels she was guided by her gut away from her car in order to get lost on Maui, so that this whole ordeal could bring people together?

It seems like in reading the article and watching the video of her in the hospital room, she is choosing to frame this as something that was supposed to happen, on a spiritual level...as opposed to a misstep or unfortunate mistake. Who knows, maybe she's right???

Yes, it would probably come to my mind also. I have seen so many horror stories about car accidents and people having to pay for the helicopters could pick them up and take them to the hospital. Heck, just a 50 mile drive in an ambulance will set you back quite a pretty penny.

What I got from this is she should never, ever follow her gut instinct again.

She kept herself alive and managed to get to a place where there was water and a helicopter could see her. She did great.

Here's a screenshot from the video:

It looks like an InReach to me: inreach SE Explorer » GPS Training

    MOO.

ETA, never mind I missed the other photo posted earlier. Looks like possibly a flip open sat phone similar to the middle one here:

Still blown away that they found her alive. I think people should give her a bit of leeway on the things she’s saying that might sound strange to some...this chick has been through a heck of a time these past few weeks & who knows where your head would be at after a time like that. Miraculous that they found her.

It’s $1,000-$1,500 per hour. SAR is legally allowed to charge for rescues but generally doesn’t. There is a long debate about whether or not it should be legal to charge bc there is a fear that people will hesitate to call if they think they’re getting a $75,000 bill. The other side of the debate says it will deter people from taking hikes off marked trails if they know tax payers aren’t going to pick up the tab.

I totally agree. Her mind is not really clear and logical yet. Any insights she has now will be kind of clouded by malnourishment, exhaustion, infections, etc. Even with all of that she is very articulate and positive. I love her.

I’m so glad she was found. I could not imagine being out in the forest alone. I would have severe fear & anxiety - worried I would never be found mainly, but thinking of the animals & bugs I would encounter, and being alone in the dark. I wouldn’t have even known what plants/fruits were safe to eat.
Does anyone have a map of how far out she was, from car to rescue area?

She seems to be doing well but she has to have effects from drinking that water. And the infections on her legs. Ouch.

Are there poisonous plants in the forest?

She ate two moths. Hard to imagine they would be more yummy than a fern

It remind me of how indigenous people would go on 'vision quests' by going off alone into the wilderness for an extended period.

I think she's indicating she had a very powerful spiritual experience out there. Perhaps she's the one who's seeing clearly, and we're the ones who are confused.
