Can you link to Amanda needing this treatment? And I don't think physical therapists would typically perform it. More likely a nurse or doctor.

Read the travel site reviews for Maui. You will find many posts stating that this forest has slippery trails. Amanda became lost and slipped off a cliff on one of the very first days in the forest. She broke her leg. She was unable to climb out of the ravine. It didn't make any difference on which direction north, south, east or west was located because she couldn't climb out of the ravine.

One of the first posts from the rescuers stated that Amanda was first seen between these two waterfalls. She couldn't climb out of this ravine with a broken leg. Photo from findaamanda page.

See my photo from last night showing the black eschars on Amanda's feet. Google "black eschar".

"John Eller and Chris Berquist announce Phase 2 of the Find Amanda effort: A volunteer initiative to carry forth the technology, practices and lessons learned from the Find Amanda campaign."

Again, they are not doing themselves any favors. So her rescue was a campaign??? In the beginning when she was first rescued I was overjoyed! I still am that she is safe.

    (shortened respectfully)
Yes, it was a campaign: a series of military operations intended to achieve a particular objective. It was a fight, battle, crusade to find her before she died in a ravine of dehydration with a broken leg and raging infection on both legs.

Pretty good article from Outside Magazine. The video in the article by Vincent Mina gives amazing perspective of the environment where Noah went missing, too.
How a Crew of Maui Volunteers Found Two Missing Hikers in a Week

And just as an aside, I don't remember WHERE I read/heard it, but one of the MSM pieces did talk about debriding AE's wounds.

Also, there's a good YT video from Amanda's dad and Chris the Search Czar about the future of search efforts they're implementing.

Also, a recent MSM photo has the exact place circled on a nice closeup photo where they first spotted Amanda.

I just google Amanda Eller daily and all the current articles/photos/videos are listed.

So FREAKIN' psyched she was found. SOOOO happy the BF didn't do it. SOOOO happy no one nabbed her.

We're in the process of moving to the Big Island's northern tip and tho' we're mostly cyclists now, retired rock climbers/backpackers/explorers, we do do the occas hike. Learned a lot from this one!

Just curious, something I've been wondering, why wasn't there any success yelling "Amanda?!?" or her yelling to anyone (searchers, passers by, etc). I haven't been in this or any rain forest, but I read a human yell should be audible up to 1/3rd of a mile. Though I presume the sounds of the forest could be somewhat loud and/or prohibit a yell from being heard.

I don't believe an official search for her started until this next day, later in the morning. By that time I'm assuming she was way out yell/hear distance.

In general: it's wise to carry a whistle in your backpack. Some gear, like backpacks, are coming with built in whistles on straps.

I have a spouse who has done lots of survival courses and reading. We have friends who have done the same. For people who love nature and are curious about what forests hold in terms of food and bounty it is part of honoring the land. I have not heard that Amanda was seeking this kind of challenge.

I think many of us are trying to figure out why Amanda made decisions she made or why she made the mistakes she made. I think we will know at some point. But, I don't think this was a survival challenge or test.

I had to look debridement up. Interesting that at one time they used maggots. Thank goodness for modern medicine. Still remember as a young kid the doctor painfully scrapping pus out of my infected hand along with a shot of penicillin. Never had a cut/scrap infection again.

I have a general question about getting lost. I always taught my children, and would probably do myself if found in such a predicament, to just stop and wait. Once one realizes they are lost, wouldn’t one effective strategy be to just stay put and wait for help vs becoming even “more” lost? Serious question.

Certainly not a one size fits all but for children it's a good lesson. IMO :)
