Hunter, James Barnes and dog, Murphy, missing in BC wilderness. Truck found with belongings inside.

...News of Benastick’s survival was bittersweet for the region, after hunter Jim Barnes and his dog Murphy were reported missing 18 October after leaving for a grouse hunting trip, less than 140 miles from where Benastick was last spotted.

Search teams found his truck as well as his keys, wallet, backpack and rifle. Neither Barnes nor Murphy were found near the vehicle. The search was suspended on 25 October, but a day later a frozen boot print and dog print were spotted along a river bank.

Wow! Just wow!

Edit: Ok looks like I mixed this missing hiker with another that was found.

did they just go for a walk and accidentally fall in or was the river frozen and they fell through the ice?
or did he intend to not come back from that walk but if so, why take your dog with you?

Murphy, the dog, has been found.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A dog belonging to a hunter reported missing in mid-October has been found, a long way from home and a long way from where he was last seen.

According to Micaela Sawyer, the partner of missing hunter Jim Barnes, a golden retriever found near Wonowon on November 28th has been identified as Barnes’ dog Murphy.

*****
According to a Facebook post from Sawyer, it was difficult to identify Murphy due to his condition after spending weeks outdoors.

Can someone familiar with this area map out the distance between where Murphy presumably went missing (where truck was found) and where he was located?
Not familiar with the area, but this is what I think so far ... going to look for trail maps in the area

Dog found: Upper Halfway Road
Road 269: last seen
Red dot: home

Top red dot is approximate area where dog was found, bottom red dot is area where he was last seen. You can zoom into the map to look for trails. I'm guessing, based on having had a lot of dogs over the years, that the dog would look for a trail, either human or animal trail.

RCMP say a search team was sent to look for clues in the case of a missing man from Fort St. John, B.C., after a dog that family members recognize as his was found alive.

However, Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says the team was unable to locate any new information on the whereabouts of Jim Barnes and the search team was once again called off, though the investigation remains an active priority for local RCMP.

*****
In an emailed statement, Saunderson said RCMP is looking into DNA tests to confirm the found dog's identity but "these tests take time."

Donally previously told CBC News that such tests could take several months to be completed as they are only done in a handful of specialized facilities.
