(AP) A tropical storm warning was in effect Sunday for the Cayman Islands and residents began preparing for the worst. The U.S. Gulf Coast could be affected later in the week, forecasters said.

The system could become Tropical Storm Wilma, which would make it the 21st named storm of the season, tying the record for the most storms in an Atlantic season, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Long-term forecasts show the storm would likely move west and north, putting the storm in the Gulf of Mexico later this week. Forecasters said water temperature and other conditions were favorable for it to become a significant hurricane.

"Once storms get into the Gulf of Mexico, I'm aware of only one storm on record that dissipated," hurricane specialist James Franklin said. "It has almost nowhere to go except land somewhere."

A hurricane watch was issued for the Cayman Islands, meaning hurricane conditions could be felt there within 36 hours. A tropical storm warning, meaning tropical storm conditions within 24 hours, also was posted.

"Because of where it is, and the fact that it is projected to become a tropical storm by tomorrow and possibly a hurricane in a couple of days, we've decided to go ahead and issue a tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch," he said.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30. Wilma is the last on the list of storm names for 2005; there are 21 names on the yearly list because the letters q, u, x, y and z are skipped. If any other storms form, letters from the Greek alphabet would be used, starting with Alpha. That has never happened in roughly 60 years of regularly named Atlantic storms.

    Good one, Cass! She's such a cutie .. <lol>

Our local weatherman on WFTV news in Central Florida just showed a graphic of the currently predicted path of this storm. After it goes into the Gulf - they have it curving back east towards the western Central Florida coastline. Said we could have another major hurricane hit Fla by next weekend.

Just NOT what I needed to hear! Say it isn't so!! Go away Wilma - you're not welcome here!

We're still making repairs & recuperating from last year's 3 damaging hurricanes - and not psychologically prepared for a repeat performance. :banghead:

After sending your Rambo Cat after me, I probably shouldn't, but here ya go!
by AccuWeather.com News Director Steve Penstone

Tropical Storm Wilma, the record-tying 21st tropical storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, has formed in the Caribbean. Accuweather.com Chief Hurricane Meteorologist Joe Bastardi expects Wilma will become a major hurricane that could hit the Florida next weekend.

Bastardi has been tracking this storm for the past five days. He says Wilma will gain hurricane strength once it enters the Gulf of Mexico, increasing to Category-3 strength as it turns to the northeast.

Some computer models take Wilma further to the west, but the Accuweather.com Eye Path takes Wilma toward Florida. A high pressure system over the U.S. could influence which track Wilma will take after it enters the Gulf. A weak area of high pressure will allow Wilma to be carried toward Florida, but if the high pressure system strengthens, the storm will be forced to the west.

The 2005 hurricane season ties 1933 for the most active year in history. Accuweather.com forecasters are watching two tropical waves in the Atlantic that have the potential for further development.
