FRUITLAND — “Cornfields are being gone through row by row, inch by inch right now,” Fruitland Police Chief JD Huff said in an email update this morning about the search for a missing 5-year-old boy. While they haven’t searched the river yet, “due to a low probability,” they are actively searching ditches canals, he says.

Community members may have joined in the search after hearing about the missing child on the Code Red System, which the Payette County Sheriff’s Office used multiple times Tuesday night to alert residents. According to Payette County Sheriff Andy Creech in an email this morning, the first alert was sent at 8:20 p.m. to the neighborhood and the last alert was sent at 11:20 p.m.

“Our drone pilots responded to the area and helped search the area by air,” Creech said. “Our drone has a high-quality video camera and infrared camera.”

Local residents joined police, fire crews and paramedics to search for the boy, aided by helicopters and a trained search dog. Despite the large search, the boy had not yet been found by Wednesday afternoon.

Huff thanked the public for their help but asked them to stay out of the area while professionals continue to search. Police also asked people in the region to check their security cameras for any helpful footage.

Neighbors say they learned about the 5-year-old's disappearance around 7:30 on Tuesday night.

They say Michael is a happy kid who lives in the neighborhood with his parents and grandfather.

Cynthia Walker lives in the neighborhood and was walking her dog as the search was happening.

"At 5 years old, I don't know that he would wander too far without one us seeing him by now,” she said. “There are volunteers, many, many volunteers out searching, scanning the fields and we just want to have Michael back, we just want him home safe."

In response to several inquiries from the public, we do not have any searches involving the community planned for today. We have aircraft, drones and canines working in the area. The grid search of the City of Fruitland on the morning of July 29th covered the city completely and some of surrounding areas. We are not telling the public they cannot continue their own personal searches, however as of right now we will not be organizing another search involving the public unless new facts or circumstances arise. Please remember that if you are searching today, to respect citizen's right to deny you entry to their property and please do not walk through cultivated fields without the property owner's permission.
