13-Year-Old Adam Toledo’s Mom Thought Her Son Was Missing — Until Cops Came Knocking 2 Days After Killing Him (blockclubchicago.org)

    [IMG] [IMG]

    [...]

At around 2:30 a.m. Monday, a police officer shot and killed seventh grader Adam Toledo in the 2300 block of South Sawyer Avenue. Chicago police have released few details about the incident, saying officers were responding to a ShotSpotter alert of shots fired when they encountered two people in an alley.

After one person ran away, an “armed confrontation” took place and an officer shot a person in his chest, police said in a statement. Police did not explain what they meant by “armed confrontation,” but Toledo was pronounced dead on the scene.

    [...]

ET reported her son missing days before the shooting, she told Block Club. On Wednesday, two days after the shooting, police reached out to the family asking for a photo, she said. She thought they were asking for the missing persons report. But about a half hour later, they knocked on her door asking her to go to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office to identify his body, ET said.

    [...]

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the killing. Mayor Lori Lightfoot called on the office to release all videos captured on body-worn cameras of the incident late Thursday.

According to their preliminary investigation, COPA officials determined responding officers came across two people and chased after them on foot, at which point one of the officers shot and killed Toledo, spokesman Ephraim Eaddy said in a statement. That officer fired his weapon once, Eaddy said.

COPA has not said whether Toledo or Ruben Roman Jr., a 21-year-old man arrested nearby following the shooting, had a weapon.

    [...]

The fatal shooting was captured on the officer’s body worn camera, Eaddy said. Eaddy also said state law bars the agency from publicly releasing videos that involve children. Documents that can be publicized include 911 calls, dispatcher records and incident reports, which will be released within 60 days, Eaddy said.

Lightfoot pushed the department to expedite the release of police video in a series of tweets Thursday.

    [...]

After the shooting, police spokesman Thomas Ahern tweeted a photo of a gun, which he said was found at the scene. Police declined to answer additional questions about the shooting or who the gun belonged to. Police also didn’t respond to questions about why they failed to notify the family until days after the shooting.

    [...]

While both Brown and Lightfoot said they supported releasing police footage of the shooting to Toledo’s family and to the public, COPA officials say that can’t happen without a court order.

COPA was exploring “all legal avenues that will allow for the public release of all video materials which capture the tragic fatal shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo,” Eaddy said in another statement.

An armed 13 year old roaming the streets at 2:30 am? I really wish he had chosen a different path.

"We will find the person who put the gun in Adam's hand," Lightfoot said during a news conference in the neighborhood on the West Side. "An adult put a gun in a child's hand, a young impressionable child who should not be provided with lethal force."

Police Superintendent David Brown and the department's chief of detectives will "use every resource to track down the origins of this gun through tracing, fingerprinting and DNA and any other means," Lightfoot said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which is investigating the shooting, has said it would release body camera footage of the shooting first to the boy's family and then the public.

According to police, officers were dispatched to Little Village after the department's ShotSpotter technology detected the sound of eight gun shots. When they arrived, Toledo and a 21-year-old man ran away. While chasing the teen, there was an "armed confrontation" during which the officer shot him once in the chest.

The 21-year-old man was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

*I’ve reported my above post. I just noticed I linked the wrong article. I apologize for not realizing this error sooner. The correct link is:
Mayor demands to know how teen killed by Chicago cop got gun

The attorney for the family of a 13-year-old boy who was shot dead by Chicago police last week said they “want to correct the hurtful and false mischaracterization of Adam as a lonely child of the street who had no one to turn to.”

“This is simply not true,” the attorney said in a statement Monday. “Adam was a loved and supported 13-year-old boy. He lived with his mother, his 90-year-old grandfather, and two of his siblings. His father was in his life. They all loved him very much. The Toledo family is a close-knit family. They look after each other. Adam attended Gary Elementary School where he had the support of his teachers and his classmates. Adam was not alone.”

The lawyer’s statement came on the heels of a press conference with Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
    ...
The attorney for Toledo’s family said they appreciate the condolences from the mayor and the police superintendent but that they are “concerned by presumptions, implications, and statements made today that are not supported by the facts made public so far regarding what transpired on March 29, 2021.”

“We are unable to refute or respond to these statements until we obtain the evidentiary facts, which so far are known only to the police,” the lawyer said in the statement following Monday’s press conference. “We are working diligently to learn the truth about what happened in the early morning hours of March 29 when Adam’s life was so tragically cut short by a police bullet. We have requested expedited meetings with pertinent authorities to obtain evidence and to review the police body camera footage and other available video.”

“To date, we have not received confirmation of a time to view the footage,” the attorney added. “We are not going to let the anguish and emotion of the moment interfere with our objective to obtain the facts. We will address all public statements about the circumstances of Adam’s death once we have the facts before us.”

The boy’s mother, Elizabeth Toledo, told Chicago ABC station WLS-TV that her son had hopes of one day becoming a police officer.

“He was so full of life,” she said. “They just took it away from him.”

    A Delay in Informing Family?
@PommyMommy bbm sbm Thanks for opening thread. Seems there was a delay in LE's linking the unidentified body to the teen reported missing, but the April 2 article* explains:
Fri. Mar 26...... Mother made MisPers report.
Sat. Mar 27 ..... Mother told LE he returned home, so case was considered closed.
Mon. Mar 29... Shooting death, at 2:30 a.m.
LE try to identify body, match to recently closed MisPers case.
Wed Mar 31..... LE ask Mother for photo, ask her to go to morgue.

Regardless a sad, sad, sad loss of a young life. RIP Adam Toledo.

    Knee Jerk?? MSTNHA ???
"Mayor Lori Lightfoot called for a new foot pursuit policy to be implemented by Chicago Police before the start of summer after a city cop shot and killed 13-year old Adam Toledo last week following a chase." *

So a few days after this sad death, the Mayor already knew the current Chicago PD foot chase policy directly led to the fatal shooting of the teen? And how? And why?
Does she know LEO followed current, official foot chase policy?
So this tragic event was caused not by LEO-failure-to-comply-w-policy but by a flawed policy?
And when announcing this, did she have a proposal for amending foot chase policy?
W an explanation of how the proposal would prevent future reoccurrences?
Because she said she wants new policy implemented before the start of summer?
Which is when, 60 or 75 days from now?

Or was her stmt a Politician's Immediate Sound Bite Solution to placate people?
Ppl who will soon re-focus on the next headline tomorrow?

    LEO shooting & killing a 13 y/o boy?
I believe all of us would like to prevent reoccurrences in Chicago, thru out the US, thru out the world.

Will a knee jerk amendment of LE foot chase policy Make Sure This Never Happens Again?
I doubt it, could be wrong. I wish I had a way to MSTNHA but I don't. Anyone?

    How Teen Got Gun?
"Lightfoot also called for an investigation into how the boy came into possession of a gun, saying an adult gave a weapon to a child and must be held accountable." *

Mayor already knows adult gave 13 y/o the gun? So Mayor knows 13 y/o did -
    - not receive the gun from another juvenile.
    - not clandestinely borrow or steal the gun.
    - not find gun in a random place, like city bus, park bench, fast food booth, school restroom, etc.

How does the Mayor know it was not any of the above? She said "an adult gave a weapon to a child" so seems she must
know gun-provider's identity to know it was an adult.

If an adult providing handgun (shown in MSM pic) to 13 y/o is a crime, that person may be arrested soon.
    And I hope held accountable.

    Different Outcome?
"Mayor Lori Lightfoot called for a new foot pursuit policy to be implemented by Chicago Police ..."
"Lightfoot also called for an investigation into how the boy came into possession of a gun, saying an adult gave a weapon to a child and must be held accountable." *

Seems Mayor acknowledged 13 y/o had a gun** at location where Chicago LE shot him.

So would a new/different LE foot chase policy have changed the outcome of this tragic event? If so, how?

Admittedly ATM we have scant info*** about the shooting. Maybe release of other info will cast a different light. IDK.
Dang, he was only 13 y/o.

Live Updates: Video from police shooting that killed 13-year-old Adam Toledo to be released

The footage is expected to be released at 2:30 p.m. local time Thursday by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which reviews all Chicago police-involved shootings.

“I have seen those videos and let me just say, they are incredibly difficult to watch, particularly at the end,” Lightfoot said, describing the teen’s death as a tragedy.

So sad. But an armed 13 year old is just as dangerous as an armed adult.

Wow, that was so hard to watch. This is beyond sad. 13 years old. When he turned with the gun the officer had no choice.
When I was watching it I thought it showed way to much.....until I saw/ heard the officer crying, saw him need to sit down. Every. Single. Person that thinks LE is filled with hate needs to watch that video.

What was a 13 year old doing out at 2:35 am with an armed 21 year old? Shouldn’t the armed 21 year old be responsible for something too?
