Randy Swope has been on the Illinois State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry for an arrest in 2008 and in 2012 he took a plea deal for sewing the buttocks of a 12-year-old shut with a needle and thread.

Police: Parents thought 10-year-old daughter was possessed, kept her in basement

[....]

Sources tell WBBM-TV that the 10-year-old was forced to use a bucket to bathe and a portable potty training toilet to use the bathroom. She was locked in the basement of the home in the 200 block of Liberty Street at night, police said.

The parents, Randy Swopes, 48, and Katherine Swopes, 49, are being held on unlawful restraint and child endangerment charges in Lake County Jail, the father on a $750,000 bond and the mother on a $150,000 bond.

yet another child with a monumental struggle to become a productive adult ahead of her....

(You have to have a license to catch a fish, right?)

Wow, just took a stroll they the fb pages. Not even sure what to say about that!
He sewed one of his kids buttocks closed with a needle and thread?!!!

He didn't sew the buttocks closed as such. He sewed the opening of a fistula on one buttock up thinking it would cure it rather than paying for healthcare professionals to treat his son.
The fistula developed as a complication of crohns disease. The poor child unsurprisingly developed an infection & then spent a month in hospital anyway.
The ridiculous sentence he got paved the way for his continued abuse of children. Zero jail time & probation for two years after he took an Alford plea. Insanity! How the heck is it sane to let someone who doesn't accept that that was wrong be near kids again.

A man charged along with his wife for allegedly confining their 10-year-old daughter to a Waukegan basement because they believed she was demonically possessed has been found unfit for trial.

Randy Swopes, 48, will be transferred to a secure treatment facility in Elgin for evaluation and treatment until he is found fit, after which time his case he will be returned for further proceedings.

Randy Swopes is scheduled for a status hearing Dec. 11 at which time it is expected that an initial report from the treatment facility may be available.

Swopes remains in custody, with bail set at $750,000.

His wife, Katherine Swopes, 49, faces the same charges as her husband and is acting as her own attorney. She was freed by Levitt on a signature bond in August with a 24-hour curfew and no-contact order involving her children and husband.

Waukegan father of 'possessed' daughter found unfit for child endangerment trial

Their 21-year-old son said his parents don’t deserve to be behind bars. He said his parents felt the 10-year-old was threatening the rest of the family; that she had written letters and threatened to kill the rest of the family.

He acknowledged his 10-year-old sister was forced to stay in the basement most of the time, slept on a cot, was made to use a portable potty training toilet, and was forced to use a bucket to shower.

Randy, 48, and Katherine, 49, have faced child abuse allegations before.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said they have had at least five encounters with the family since the 1990s.

DCFS first had contact with the couple in 1994 in downstate Illinois. They underwent five months of counseling for abuse allegations regarding two of their three children.

Smh. For so many reasons. Wow did the system fail these poor kids. Did they attend school? And the 21 year old son must be brainwashed to defend his parents. Ugh. What a horrific situation.

The wife has been posting weird crap on the husbands Facebook. The religious factor reminds me of the New Mexico case.. the name of the victim is escaping me.

Anyway, how terrible for these poor kids. And the mom got released on her own recognizance bc she was concerned about losing her subsidized housing??!! Are you kidding me??!!

The Illinois Department of Public Health has found 48-year-old Randy Swopes can stand trial in Lake County on child endangerment and unlawful restraint charges.

Swopes is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 15 for a hearing in which his attorneys can either accept or challenge the fitness determination.

From May 2019:

Mother accused of keeping 'possessed' daughter in Waukegan basement gets probation in plea deal

The guilty plea from Katherine Swopes came as part of a negotiated plea deal that resolves her case and will require her to testify if necessary at the pending trial of her husband, Randy Swopes.

The plea deal, under which Katherine Swopes was sentenced 30 months of felony probation including several conditions

Under the plea deal for Katherine Swopes, in addition to probation, she is to undergo a mental health evaluation, take parenting classes, perform 150 hours of public service, and have no contact with her husband during her probationary period, prosecutors said in court Friday.

She also submitted a written statement about the incident to prosecutors under the deal, and agreed to testify if needed against Randy Swopes.

The final component of the plea deal is a year of periodic imprisonment that Rossetti said will be stayed as long as Katherine Swopes follows all the guidelines of her probation.
