KINGSTON MINES - Human remains have been found near Kingston Mines in the southeast part of Peoria County.

Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy says the discovery is being investigated by his department and the Peoria County Coroner's Office.

The coroner's office confirms the remains were found on the property of River's Edge Campground off Washington St. in Kingston Mines. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says he was called to the scene Monday shortly after 3 p.m. and claims a camper discovered the remains.

The remains will undergo a forensics exam Tuesday afternoon, according to Harwood. Authorities have not been able to identify the person, but the exam should answer critical questions to begin the process.

The remains were discovered Monday afternoon at Rivers Edge Boating and Camping, according to Harwood. It’s at the foot of Washington Street in Kingston Mines, near the Illinois River. A search continued into the late evening.

A forensic pathologist is expected to visit the site sometime Tuesday, according to Harwood, and attempt to make two determinations: whether the remains are male or female, and the general age of the deceased.

Nearby residents to whom the Journal Star spoke said the campground was flooded until last week.

The skull was found Monday afternoon by a property owner at the Rivers Edge Campground, which is located at the foot of Washington Street in the southeastern Peoria County village. On Tuesday, Capt. Tyler McCoy of the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office said the owner found the skull, later determined by a forensic pathologist to be that of a man, near the bank of the river. Another set of bones, located by one of the county’s search and rescue teams, about a mile and a half northeast of the campground were found later Sunday evening, about 8 p.m. Those, however, were determined to be animal bones.

The skull is estimated to have been in the water for two to four months, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Tuesday. However, work was done to begin the process of identification through DNA. The coroner said teeth were extracted from the skull so DNA could be retrieved.
Locally, there are two prominent missing person cases. One is Robert Bee Jr., a 13-year-old Pekin boy who ran away from home in mid-November and hasn’t been seen since. The other is Marc Bohanan, 60, a Glasford man who has been missing since April 26 when he possibly left his home with another person.

DDP made a case announcement post for this case yesterday: DNA Doe Project

DNA Doe Project Case Announcement: Peoria County John Doe – Illinois (2016-17)

Status: Research in progress.

Who was Peoria County John Doe?
On June 12, 2017 a human head washed ashore on the banks of the Illinois River in Kingston Mines, Illinois. The property owner at the River’s Edge Campground, who picked up the skull thinking it was a Halloween decoration took it into his house until it started to smell. The skull was later linked via DNA to a torso previously recovered on November 13, 2016 in Schuyler County downriver. There was a hole in the skull, which investigators thought at first was a bullet hole, but on closer inspection, actually was blunt force trauma with the skull pushed in. Forensic investigators determined the deceased to be a white male between 30-55 years old.
