COLUMBUS, Ind. – Authorities in Columbus are searching for a 6-year-old boy that was swept away by water at Mill Race Park Thursday afternoon, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

DNR originally told FOX59 that the child had drowned, but officers now say they are still hoping for a good outcome.

Conservation officers say family saw him being swept away, tried to save him and realized it was too dangerous.

A search using a helicopter and sonar is currently underway.

10:10 p.m. update: The search for Brendan Sperry is suspended for tonight because of the dark and is to resume at between 7 and 8 a.m. on Friday. Mill Race Park will be closed to the public Friday as the search continues.

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Authorities in Columbus are continuing to search for a 6-year-old boy that was swept away by water at Mill Race Park Thursday afternoon.

Crews with the Department of Natural Resources have been doing everything in their power to locate Brendan Sperry, including searching on the land, in the air, and in the water using divers and boats.

Four boats, including an air-boat, and K9 officers will all assist in today’s search.

They suspended the search overnight because it was too dark, but they resumed on Friday at 8 a.m.
